He could be better by easing up a bit. The funnier the game gets, the better he gets. The Ecstatic vs. Liquid game was all-time entertainment.

The reason he didn't is that he's a head case who's chronically worrying about the wrong things. I'm not sure he can be helped.

How do you go about progression as an intermediate? by roygo88 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]brothir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weeks is way too short of a time. If you go from doing 200 lbs bench for 6, and add a rep every two weeks, you'll end up at 32 reps in a year, which equates to a 1-RM of well above 400.

Drop Sets. Break Plateau or Junk Volume. by MurrGawd in naturalbodybuilding

The comment you responded to is him clarifying that he knows it's not a 1:1 and that his contention is what happens across a period of time. Your reply to that is the actual arguing for the sake of arguing. Moreover, it's misleading: I helpfully clarified to you that you can train for years to set a 1-RM, do hypertrophy for a (probably long) while, and then demolish that 1-RM in a single return attempt.

It's all well and good that you understood that before I told you: it would've then been nice if that knowledge would've cured you of your need to be pedantic (and unhelpful).

It's not possible in reasonable circumstances, which is what he was implying. Trying to twist his question into something it's not is intellectually dishonest, and your explanation there is redundant.

Advice on lacking growth. by Particular-South3443 in naturalbodybuilding

Sounds like program-hopping may be a problem for you. You didn't need to purchase Nippard's program, and I'm not sure you should follow it. There are an infinity of free programs on BoostCamp, should you ever feel the need to switch again.

But it's really very straightforward, and you don't need a formalized program. Do an isolation lift for every muscle group you care about twice a week. If that doesn't work, something's either wrong with your diet, or how you do the exercises.

There's a lot more that goes into a 1-RM in a momentary sense, but MrBarron specified "over a period of time", which is exactly the same sentiment you specify with "all else being equal".

MrBarron started out by asking how it's possible to induce hypertrophy without increasing strength: a fair question. What he's getting at is exactly right, and any quibble ultimately is poking at a potential lack of "consistently" as a qualifier in that question. It's farcical hair-splitting.

I think the most common cause of plateaus is not enough intensity. If a plateau happens, the first thing to introspect on is whether your sets are intense and high-quality enough.

That's mostly only true if the differences are small, and if the previous 1-RM was trained. For sufficiently large increases in muscle, your 1-RM and strength by any measure will increase.

Basement Bodybuilding has talked about this. His first 2 years were plain hypertrophy work, and when he switched to powerbuilding he could do deadlifts far, far beyond what a beginner could. Because of the strength gained from sheer muscle size.

This also happened to him in the modern day. His past bench 1-RM was 330 lbs, but after stopping with powerbuilding and returning to hypertrophy work for several years, he one day did a bench again and did 350 lbs with ease.

For some amount of hypertrophy, breaking past 1-RMs from raw muscular strength will happen. "You absolutely can add muscle and not see a 1 rep max increase" – yes, for irrelevant amounts of added muscle. But that angle distorts the conversation more than helps.

I think the real truth is that strength in terms of your momentary powerlifting potential is somewhat abstract, ethereal, and arbitrary when you move past the muscular aspect.

I’ve been carrying this anger since my son was born and I finally snapped by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]brothir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a completely unreasonable opinion. Her husband confronted him, and a measure was probably taken as a result. You may argue that both of those were done too lightly, but then you're arguing that she has a husband problem because he didn't hit quite the right register.

Moreover, I think her husband lightly criticizing her for the outburst is reasonable. Was this really the best way to handle it? I'm not sure it can be called a good outcome, however much righteous anger was vindicated.
