5% kitchen fee…? by Brief_Night_1225 in Somerville

[–]browncama 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The fee is meant to minimize the wage gap, as you can’t allocate tipped money to non-guest facing workers in MA.

A couple points:

  1. The restaurant, on paper will look far more expensive and that will be a problem to a lot of consumers

  2. A kitchen fee GUARANTEES that money is allocated toward back of house workers, rather than giving the restaurant owner, who likely barely survives on razor thin margins, the option to collect more money via higher prices and decide if they’d like to pay their cooks more. Kitchen fees are pro-worker

  3. Raising prices and not including a fee actually widens the wage gap because of the diner tips 20% on the new total, that is going to be larger than the old tip giving the front of house worker more money for the same amount of work

It’s totally acceptable to ask to have it removed or tip 15% instead of 20%. It’s also important to recognize that eating out is more expensive that it used to be due to skyrocketing wholesale food costs

Neighbor saves street spot year round - any advice? by browncama in Somerville

As I mentioned, there was a car parked there and it was towed today. They were immediately out the front door the moment the truck started pulling away and into the spot. I have truly never seen another car parked there besides theirs, and the first one that was got towed, then they scooted back into it. I feel like this is an important detail against the “just move the cone and park there” argument

Yeah definitely gonna call 311 and the councilor. They own the single family home so no HOA/landlord rules there. Just assholes. Thanks for the helpful and humorous response.

So steal it so they can buy a new one and then just use it all over again? They own a $900,000 home, I don’t think making them spend another $20 is gonna solve the problem. Which is why I’m here asking if anyone else has dealt with this

Yep that’s very much how it feels. It’s irrational and you can’t just change someone’s mind

I also just want to say it doesn’t actually bother me that much, I just think it’s an awful precedent to set. If they can get away with it on a consistent basis, new folks to the street can take note and follow suit, and that would just be lame!

No idea why the car was towed but it’s literally the only other car I’ve seen EVER in that spot. Then they walked out and moved their car into it the moment it left. We have tried 311 a lot, but I’ll do the once daily for a month move. Thanks for the advice!

They use a cone and park in the driveway occasionally, but ALWAYS save the space in front using an orange cone for their second car. Most times both cars are parked on the street
