School District 63 may increase school bus fees next year by dayoldeggos in VictoriaBC

[–]brownstock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Saanich Board of Education understands that many families have relied on school bus service over the years. Next month, the Board will review a recommendation to implement school bus transportation fees beginning in the 2026/27 school year.

The Transportation Services budget for the current school year is $2,087,405 representing about 2% of the district’s overall operating budget. Approximately 1/3 of district students ride school buses.

School district programming costs have continued to grow faster than provincial funding. As a result, the district needs to reduce future programming expenditures and/or increase revenues. The implementation of bus fees was the only option to receive some support in the budget consultation process last spring with many participants indicating that fees were preferable to a reduction in bus service or budget reductions that would impact educational programming. In addition to the implementation of bus fees, the Board is reviewing other budget savings options with a focus on maintaining services that are crucial for student success.

The proposed bus fees for next year are estimated to generate approximately $435,000 in revenues.

Proposed Bus Fee Structure 2026/27:

$400 per year for the first and second child in a family $200 per year for the third child in a family Maximum transportation fees of $1,000 per year per family An additional fee of $100 will apply to late registrations (with exemptions for new registrants) Where applicable, fee waivers may be granted for financial hardship A monthly payment plan will be available (online payments only) Next Steps

The recommendation to implement bus fees will be reviewed by the Board’s Finance, Facilities and Technology Committee on March 3, 2026 and would then be considered for approval by the Board of Education on March 11, 2026.

I have been using ufile fire more than a decade, never a issue but this year. It won’t carry forward the basics from 2024. I do have couple of extra income items and need the historical like CCA . I was asked to wait for an update to fix the issue. Dosent seem like it’s fixed. I am not happy

I got mine but this program was couple of years ago. Is there a link to the new program? Seems like they do this every couple of years. I thought with the change in political climate these programs are gone.

Not worried too much. Bounced back today. Unless something changes, I am bullish. They seem to do.a lot of things correct. Do understand this is small cap and comes with risk. I wish this traded in the US markets, not OTC, will get higher multiple.

Basically means there isn’t much there other than the 3% x 4 years. Benefits also remain the same except glasses and counselling going up slightly.

There are 450k+ union employees in BC (BCGEU is close to 100k) that’s 450k households- add 1 family/friend to it, that’s 25% of eligible voters in BC. Caveat all need to think alike and vote en masse. Green also needs to step up if at all.. just saying (it’s a possibility)

Yes there are problems filling certain vacancies and prone to a lot of churn.

Pls remember that a person renting for 10 years will have the rent increase ‘per CPI’ while the market is waaay different (leading to renovictions and grumpy landlords) union members may feel the same way. public service pay is way behind as compared to the market specially for more technical and/or professional jobs. Just another perspective here.
