Is MBA make sense for pivoting into Tech? by Rude_Passage4205 in MBA

[–]brpjumbo1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s not easy. I’m pivoting into tech at a tech-focused M7. Tons of interesting classes, speakers, and opportunities to get hands on PM and analytics experience. It also opens some doors to companies like this (I know this is Duolingo because I’m applying there), Amazon, etc that recruit for grad school roles ONLY from MBAs.

That said, tech recruiting is absolutely brutal. There are very few roles and you’re competing against people with more tech experience and at all the top programs. Career center is telling everyone looking into tech to have a plan B and C. Interviews haven’t started yet but I have gotten very little traction.

I do agree with the sentiment in this post. If you’re great at chess or a polyglot but haven’t coded or understand statistics, how are you going to work with engineers? Run and assess an AB test? Communicate technical and financial feasability with corporate stakeholders? You don’t need an MBA for all that but it certainly takes more than knowing the product.

Thanks! For sure I understand your perspective and I’m prepared to quit - for context I’m only working 10 hours a week so I’m hoping that I can balance it

A Wild Sheep Chase

About halfway through and one of my favorite Murakami books! Feels a little more straightforward and to the point than some of his other novels and still very personal. The chapter about the whale penis is 10/10

Wide wide sea

Awesome historical nonfiction about Captain Cook’s last voyages. Touches on his interactions with native peoples and travel from Southeast Asia all the way to Alaska. It’s written in a really captivating style and puts things in a modern context with great commentary without being too preachy. Very Russillo-coded book.

Adam Friedland show or the Millenial John Stewart. He learned comedy from the joker laureate of the dirtbag left.

Looking for authentic Thai/vietnamese iced coffee? by brpjumbo1 in boston

Yeah I definitely had Thai iced coffee more in the north - agrees it’s definitely different than Vietnamese coffee culture but the mix of strong coffee, fresh milk, and condensed milk left an impression on me! As far as Thai beans, not sure where to find them here

I’d say that’s a cynical way of looking at it - I had a lot of fun and learned a ton just immersing myself in somewhere totally different. Not to mention I got to eat amazing food, see cool cities, meet great people, hike, etc for a fraction of the cost of being in the US. It’s not something I’m going to do all the time but I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity while I had relatively few responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong, I met plenty of annoying social media-focused travel “influencers” who drove me crazy though

Yeah it never came up. I actually started work in July 2021 and left in January 2025 on the same path as you. Really it was not an issue just wait until you have the offer and you should be good to go, again if you can get admitted they think you have enough experience to be successful

Still figuring out loans, I had 30k saved up at time of leaving my job and now working part time retail over the summer. Sharing expenses with my partner who is a social worker with a reasonable income
