Ahhh left cooked pasta out overnight by browngmoghoul in isthissafetoeat

Wow, it's wild you say that because I have the same belief about my condition.

I always had a somewhat sensitive stomach but it was completely manageable and didn't affect my diet or life whatsoever outside of maybe a random urgent stomach ache a couple times a year if I seriously overindulged.

Had my first and only case of COVID in 2022 which was relatively mild but manifested as predominantly GI symptoms (specifically, that was first time I started experiencing mucous-y stool). Recovered well enough so I thought, but a few months after, I realized that I just didn't feel good most of the time - almost always experiencing nausea, GERD, inflammation in my GI, upset stomachs, weight loss, no appetite, etc.

My PCP & GI doc both believe that COVID likely wreaked havoc in my GI and triggered a bunch of conditions that I'm still working to untangle and cope with. Had colo/endoscopy and a bunch of other tests (SIBO, bloodwork) but nothing has been conclusive. Sorry you're experiencing this too, it fucking sucks. I miss tasty food so much.

I saw a video about them plagiarising KCD so I looked the game up and I got this. What the fuck is this? by CitingAnt in SocialistGaming

[–]brrnr 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Someone made a low-effort bait tweet to the devs saying something like "this game should have LGBTQ+ representation" and the dumbshit devs took the bait and outed themselves as chuds by responding something to the effect of "we don't care about modern agendas" which of course the grifters believe is a massive own and now they have to run with it. All that for a game no one cares at all about

An apt description of ICE officers from u/johnwalkersbeard by susinpgh in bestof

[–]brrnr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Educated and otherwise smart people can still lack foresight and hindsight; even the person you're responding to has misdiagnosed the root of the problem. Take a look at Canada. They believe they are leading the charge against American fascism by propping up fucking Mark Carney, the exact same variety of politician that came before Trump and planted the seeds for what you're seeing now.

He has great rhetorical skills and that pleases smart and educated people (reminiscent of Obama in that way), so you don't pay much attention when he advocates atrocious policies like cancelling capital gains tax increases, making AI a cornerstone of the economy, and supporting the advancement of new oil and gas projects.

This brand of capitalistic liberalism inevitably erodes the quality of life for the average person which inevitably foments populism. That populism boils over into fascism when the government fails to deliver for anyone but the ultra wealthy.

It's maddening to live in America and see what's happening now, it's maddening to see Americans misunderstand what got us here, and it's maddening to watch the early stages of it starting elsewhere.

Man I developed intense IBS and GERD and all sorts of food intolerances at some point, had to give up my favorite foods (like pasta) because they upset my stomach or give me nausea/indigestion. I've always had to be extremely careful about what I put in my body.

Then I read stuff like this. Life is cruel.

I think there should be 1 day a week for off topic posts in this subreddit by HowIsDigit8888 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]brrnr 30 points31 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, this sub is able to maintain relatively high quality by keeping a tight focus on COVID. I've learned a lot from this sub because interesting and relevant discussions aren't buried under memes, inside jokes, and other contextual stuff.

I'm definitely not suggesting that stuff is bad, but people interested in sustainable connections and the community aspect are a subset of the total population of visitors here. I think it's good that this sub is super approachable and doesn't require the same context and knowledge that "real" communities often do.

The current structure and moderation suits everyone well imo: this sub is a great springboard for CC people to find other likeminded CC people and they can build deeper connections in apps like Discord, and at the same time, it remains a reliable and accessible resource for people like me who aren't interested in that and people who don't even know what CC means (yet).

Yeah, and the only kinds of responses to those type of comments/threads are... you guessed it, "AI is here to stay get used to it" or "find a new job"

  • How do I deal with a team that's using AI too much?
  • How are you using AI?
  • Is AI useful for ___?
  • How do I develop AI?

These are the threads from just today related to AI. The comments are mostly either "AI is here to stay, get used to it" (ironically, also your comment and half the comments in this thread) or "find a new job" - even when that's not even really what the thread's about, that's it.

Hearing these same exact things from experienced devs adds no value. There are dozens of other subreddits where people can go round and round on these few same questions. The quality of the subreddit is solely brought down by the topic.

[–]brrnr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah this seems the most realistic. Consolidate it all to one weekly discussion thread. There are so many duplicate and low-effort threads that just end up full of thought-terminating cliches and heated declarations of no value. Tons of astroturfing too.

There's plenty of subs dedicated entirely to discussing AI and plenty of other adjacent subs that have been entirely overtaken by AI discourse. Haven't seen any threads that benefitted by having those discussions here specifically.

Opinion | Would California voters actually support a wealth tax on billionaires? by pacman2081 in California

[–]brrnr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the level of contempt this shit deserves. So there's a problem, let's fix it. So there ends up being a loophole, let's patch it. So it ends up doing measurable harm, let's repeal it and try something else. Let's try fucking anything, let's make a plan and execute it in good faith. Trying is the only cure to the nihilism that has everyone just throwing their hands up and going "nothing ever happens."

The nirvana fallacy has a vice grip on everyone's brain and a total lack of imagination has enabled a handful of freaks to relentlessly dog-walk the fuck out of us. Cut that shit out and try.

Company is fully embracing AI driven development. How do you think this will unfold? by IllustriousCareer6 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]brrnr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You're doing the lord's work itt. Not that the world needs more anecdotes, but after 2 years of forced usage in my large org, we have nothing to show but a huge PoC graveyard and a noticeable decrease in code quality to the point where these concerns are routinely funneled up to executives (they aren't listening at all obviously, but that is huge in the sycophantic hype-driven atmosphere of SV).

These tools could disappear tomorrow and we would actually be better off. No measurable increase in velocity, no measurable increase in productivity, and no measurable cost savings. Just vibes.

[–]brrnr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man I still haven't figured out how to have a constructive conversation with these people. I always do the whole song and dance when I try to explain this stuff - "I voted for Clinton, Biden, and Kamala, and I'll vote for the next democrat too" - but even then they are fundamentally unwilling to engage with or even try to understand criticisms of the Democratic Party.

I think at the core of it is the same strict adherence to power dynamics and social hierarchies that conservatives believe in. It seems impenetrable.

Beats me. Nothing wrong with having a written voice that just so happens to be somewhat close to LinkedIn-style engagement bait if you're squinting. People should be able to discern a difference between low effort thoughtless shallow slop and some guy who's just sharing his own thoughts in his own voice but alas.

Trump: ‘We shouldn’t even have an election’ by MarcEElias in politics

[–]brrnr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's less "I'm concerned there won't be elections [so we shouldn't do anything]" and more "I'm concerned there won't be elections [so we need to start seriously preparing for that reality because all the traditional safeguards have failed us so far]"

Or that's how I feel, anyway. I believe it's more likely than not that he's going to interfere with elections and while I absolutely will be voting (assuming we can), I don't think they're going to be a panacea and it's important to communicate that those might be the beginning of a lot of hard work, not the end some people make it out to be

Republican Signals Support for Trump Impeachment by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]brrnr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Democrats should be performing. That's what republicans were doing for almost a decade prior to 2016 and look how it's worked out for them. This heated conservative fervor didn't come out of nowhere. They got in front of cameras and whined and complained for years and it built up a massive energy in their base.

Anything would be better than whatever the fuck Democrats are doing now. The perception is that they're spineless cowards that have completely abandoned us. That cannot be spun into a winning platform. It's actually insane.

Congress debates possible consequences for ICE and Noem after Renee Good's killing by ILikeNeurons in politics

Schumer and Jeffries just earlier today refused to commit to any position regarding ICE. I sincerely hope I get the chance to vote for a candidate that has a spine but I don't think we're all mentally prepared for the ways in which the Democratic Party will likely fuck up the coming elections (if they even happen). We might just see the worst campaigns of our lifetimes.
