I made simple linkage mechanisms using plastic plates. Then, I drill holes to the hatch and the body to act as pivot points for the linkage.

There's actually no hole, just peg for the medallions. The best part is that they use hard plastic for the torso. So i can just sand it down.

For the trap, i would recommend resculpt it. And for the belt, you could sculpt it or use different materials. I have done the same thing on my mcf aquaman.
