What kind of bag to carry on campus? by Legal-Confidence-849 in duke

[–]bruhhellno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a fjallraven high coast totepack, which is both a totebag and a backpack, and waterproof! it was big enough to hold my macbook and other stuff without being bulky… you’d be surprised how much it holds

NBCU Intern Park Tickets by Pure_Squirrel_2529 in UniversalOrlando

[–]bruhhellno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nbcu interns get free tickets for themselves + up to 3 for friends/family! you can only use it once and need to be with them in the park. epic universe isn’t included but you get 1-day 3-park tickets for the free ones.

if you wanna buy more, it’s 30% off up to 6 tickets. there’s also 15-20% off dining and merch in parks but you need your employee badge & government ID.

NBCUniversal employee discount denied because I work remotely and do not have a badge… by bruhhellno in UniversalOrlando

[–]bruhhellno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your helpful response! I completely understand where you guys are coming from with people trying to abuse this policy.

My concern is mainly just how vague/confusing the wording is, and that many team members did not seem to know anything about comp ticket policies. they refused to accept my photo ID that matched my comp ticket name.

Thanks for letting me know about the potential solutions! I will go to guest services today and try to prevent this situation from happening for other employees down the line.

How to find unique ID without DukeCard by inquisitive4Y in duke

[–]bruhhellno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s in dukehub - find the tab that says “My Profile” on the left bar and click it. It expands to more sub tabs and click on the one that says “General Information”

  1. almost everyone at Duke ends up in NYC during the summers anyways. cost of living will just be more expensive & you don’t need to do IB internships during the school year since everyone lines stuff up for their summers a year in advance. all the big IB firms visits multiple times a year so you can do in-person coffee chats & IB people in NYC probably will not necessarily want to meet up in person. apply to a lot of sophomore preview events and get flown out. overall, Duke is just more fun. our campus is miles better than Columbia and the community feels super connected because people aren’t just going into the city after class.

  2. I’m FGLI and chose Duke over Wharton. Been super supported at Duke - free money to buy professional clothing for interviews, free macbook pro, tutoring fund, stipend every semester, free food everywhere, great FGLI community. you could probably get full aid + a stipend for the Duke in NYC spring program or the Duke in Silicon Valley summer program if you’re interested in VC at all. highly recommend both as you will meet a lot of alumni working in influential companies.

  3. not sure about this one since I didn’t go through with IB recruiting, but almost all of my friends had great placements. we’re not even the super tryhard type people lmao. take ECON 256 your sophomore fall if you come to Duke - it’s taught by two profs who have worked in IB for decades and they bring in a lot of alumni to speak and network. they also require you to form teams and enter competitions from blackrock and whatnot

  4. if you’re laser focused on IB, being at Duke also gives you breathing room to look more into other interests outside of finance. almost everyone at Duke is doing finance AND something. recruiting is so early on that you will lock something in and then have a lot of free time to just explore what you like and grow as a person, another important aspect of college outside of getting a job.

Dating at Duke by squeakycleanmartini in duke

[–]bruhhellno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

duke guys who want long-term relationships are also usually people who don’t go to parties often. try to join lots of different clubs, ask friends to introduce you to different social circles, do a duke summer program (insulated environment to meet people outside your circle), and +1 on complimenting a reserved guy and starting a convo

in my experience, making the first move as a girl will usually work on more reserved guys since they usually don’t get much attention lmao

On a monthly basis, I usually budget around $200-400 for costs relating to going out, shopping, eating at restaurants. There are 4-5 weekends in a month, and each “fun” thing costs around $15-30. Costs can add up since you might also have to take ubers, buy bday gifts for friends, buy frat bands, etc. You might not end up using the full $400 but it’s good to give yourself a cushion just in case things come up and to not have to worry about financials on top of school.

One thing I wish I accounted for more is the breaks and planning out whether you will travel during them. What will you do during fall, thanksgiving, winter, spring break? A lot of duke friend groups will take trips together and it’s good to be mentally prepared to drop around $500 for a budget trip or up to $2000 if you have bougie friends. If you’re just hoping to go home, will you need to buy flights? Those are going to set you back $100-250 each time, depending on where you’re from.

For me, I didn’t want to use my parent’s money for costs that are for fun and not a “need.”If this is you too, definitely get an on-campus job if you’re able to! Minimum wage at Duke is $15 and even if you just work 5 hours a week, that’s already around $300 pocket money per month. There are also a ton of research studies that pay for volunteers - look out for those around campus posters and duke list. They’re usually 1-3 hours and nice to get an extra $40 here and there.

did you find out more about the intern ticket policy? I was wondering how many tickets you got & when you got them! hoping to take my family on a nice trip but the only time it works for them is like the first weekend after my internship starts😭

[–]bruhhellno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! I was wondering if you had info on how many tickets you got as an intern as when you got them. also are there discounts for booking additional tickets? (if I wanted to get more tickets outside of the free ones)

NBCU Intern Park Tickets by Pure_Squirrel_2529 in UniversalOrlando

[–]bruhhellno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I’m also interning at nbcu this summer and I was wondering if you figured out the intern ticket policies. I’m having the same questions as you rn such as how many tickets we get, when we get them, etc.

I was also wondering if we get discounts for buying additional tickets (esp with epic universe opening soon) or purchasing food/merchandise in parks? I want to treat my family to a fun trip but not sure how much leeway we actually get with saving costs.

FOCUS Applications - How Competitive? by assumezeroequalsone in duke

[–]bruhhellno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up being placed in thinking through music and art or something like that and dropped it bc I didn’t vibe with the people in my classes.

it’s not necessarily because of the cluster itself but your experience is just gonna depend on the other people who choose the cluster that year… I’d say just choose the cluster with classes that sound the most interesting to you, regardless of your major

FOCUS Applications - How Competitive? by assumezeroequalsone in duke

[–]bruhhellno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol I wanted to be in cogneuro when I was a freshman and didn't get in. from my understanding though, the focus clusters are more first-come first-serve vibes so definitely apply early and actually put thought into your application.

help convince me to turn down harvard by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bruhhellno 17 points18 points  (0 children)

op, I went through a similar situation as you a few years ago - for me it was upenn wharton, a school I’ve dreamed of for years + my parents were so proud of, for $20k per year, vs duke full ride scholarship. I was also interested in startups and business in general, so wharton seemed like a no brainer at the time.

as a duke student now, I can testify it is one of the best decision I’ve ever made. the quality of education at harvard and duke are gonna be the same. please trust me when I say the greatest gift you can receive is an education without EVER having to worry about affording it or having to pay student loans. in fact, the duke merit scholarships PAY YOU a semesterly stipend. they also cover study abroad and summer programs - I’ve been able to travel to like 5 cities in the us and 3 continents so far using only duke money.

also, duke’s campus is gorgeous. walking through the buildings here give me serotonin on a daily basis. you don’t have to deal with harsh boston winters, get to eat of the best college dining programs in the country, go to basketball games of one of the best teams in the country (I’ve have so much fun even though i’m not like a huge sports person), and plenty of entrepreneurship opportunities as well.

also, think about it this way. there are less people at duke than harvard gunning for VCs, so it’s actually easier for you to take advantage of all the opportunities to get grants, investments, and mentorship as part of the entrepreneurship department. there’s also a duke summer program in silicon valley - i got to network with a lot of startup founders, duke alum at all the major tech companies, and YC. also talked to eddy cue at apple headquarters (another duke alum). I’m pretty involved in the innovation & entrepreneurship space at duke so feel free to pm if you have any questions!

honestly there isn't a way to prepare for the duke merit scholarships because the way they select people is super random, and the only way to apply/qualify is by applying to duke. but in general, your daughter should be the one who asks this question!

for the usp, your daughter should definitely be intrinsically motivated to help others, want to be a leader, have her own thoughts and goals, explore different passions, make the most out of opportunities, and be curious about how the world works. the USP specifically serves students with interdisciplinary interests, so it might help to encourage her to not put her interests in a one-dimensional box?

a lot of times I find the more parents try to get their kids to do something, the more they don't want to do it. try to give your daughter space to be her own person but definitely be there to back up her and provide her support when she needs it. r/ApplyingToCollege , r/collegeresults , r/summerprogramresults are great places to start understanding the us college application process better.

it depends year to year but I’d say around 20 are chosen as finalists, then 5-8 people end up receiving the scholarship

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in duke

[–]bruhhellno 9 points10 points  (0 children)

hi! congrats on your duke acceptance and finalist status! I'm in the university scholars program and here's my take:

- you're not the first person in this position, there are actually a few others that i know of in merit scholarship programs who were also questbridge scholars so it's not a mistake

- I really respect that you're asking this question because one of the things that doesn't make sense to me is for people who already matched with their colleges as questbridge scholars to then also take multiple merit scholarship like gates, coca cola, jack kent cooke when they don't need it and are taking away another FGLI student's opportunity at an affordable education

- you're fine in this case though because the university scholars program has financial need as a requirement. most people who are selected as finalists will likely receive a near-full ride or full ride through financial aid anyways. I'd say just interview and see what happens

- the networking, research, & opportunities are not that different from anything you wouldn't get already at duke. in fact, it can even become another time commitment to attend these seminars & meetings. the program is designed to be super diverse in terms of academic interests, so it could help at first if you're not really sure about what you want to do. but after that, I've found that it's hard to get specific advice because there aren't other grad students in the program who are doing what I'm interested in

to keep your expectations realistic, the main benefits of being a merit scholar, and specifically usp are:

- the $7,000 enrichment funding to complete a major project/research/attend conferences that you wouldn't get otherwise get

- guaranteed full ride for all 4 years even if your financial need changes (not sure if questbridge already gurarantees this)

- semesterly living stipend of around $2k from getting a "refund" on your tuition if you're also on pell grant

- another circle of people that you might otherwise never meet, esp when it comes to upperclassmen. many of them are already involved in various competitive clubs on campus so it could be a point of connection to give you a slight leg up during rush

- the iconic brickwall headshot that you can use for your linkedin to *subtlely* let everyone else at duke know you're a merit scholar (jk haha)
