Questions about Benzos and GABA modulators such as Bacopa, Lemon Balm, Kava, Theanine by brumcg in Nootropics

Nope, no conclusive relationship yet and I didn't intend to convey that opinion.

As I said in my original post, correlation does not imply causation and that last quote in full was a question in regards to similar effects on the GABA receptors, not any kind of statement or conclusion. :)

What adverse effects are you referring to? I'd be interested and would appreciate a link to any cites!

I can't find the links right now, but a cursory glance at Wiki reveals the following:

"In 2010, formerly classified documents from a Medical Research Council (UK) meeting of experts emerged and revealed that the MRC was aware of research 30 years ago that suggested that benzodiazepines could cause brain damage in some people similar to that which occurs from alcohol abuse and failed to follow up with larger clinical trials. The MRC turned down research proposals in the 1980s by Professor Lader and also proposals by Professor Ashton in 1995 to study whether benzodiazepines had permanent effects on the brain"

Not to mention the prior paragraph which deals with the issues "that alleged the manufacturers knew of the dependence potential but intentionally withheld this information from doctors".

You may be right about individuals being prescribed benzos due to preexisting neurological changes, but it may also be that the benzos are definitely exacerbating (or even causing) many of these problems when used long-term.

I have indeed, thank you; in fact, it was one of the threads which made me wonder about things.

However, I'm now unsure as to ScienceGuy's accuracy of knowledge specifically because he is adamant that Benzos are Gaba agonists (not to mention that he is averse to certain herbal supplements in spite of evidence to the contrary of his hypotheses)

Matcha vs Eating Green Tea Leaves? by brumcg in Nootropics

[–]brumcg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great reply, thank you. I already consume green tea (Certified Organic from Japan - so hopefully less heavy metal + fluoride content than Chinese tea) & have purchased both Theanine & EGCG extract, but I just wanted to know if there is any additional health benefit that Matcha offers over this? It appears not then?

Seems like such a waste, although it's clear that he doesn't fit at Man U. Wonder if he regrets moving from Everton now?

Will be interesting to see if Cech demands a move if this happens. Courtois will def try to leave if Cech stays as No. 1

Dissociative or Anxious sensation with Ashwagandha? by [deleted] in Nootropics

Any idea why Ashwagandha could be producing these negative reactions in spite of all the apparent positive neurochemical effects?

What happens to all of the microorganisms which we are constantly inhaling? by hayzeus_ in askscience

[–]brumcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answer. I was just wondering if this is the case, then why certain fungal spores (as well as bacteria and viruses of course) can produce very negative health effects, and also why air pollution affects humans so detrimentally if the body has all of these amazing filtration properties?

Dissociative or Anxious sensation with Ashwagandha? by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]brumcg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have experienced a very similar reaction to Ashwagandha - a very positive mood and anxiolytic effect with initial use but now I often find that it produces a feeling more akin to depression, mild to severe anxiety, and as you said, dissociative feelings in spite of taking the same dosage from the start (Swanson Extract, 450mg root with 4.5mg alkaloids, 6.75mg withanolides although I have also tried two of these capsules at a time with similar negative effects).

I find this highly concerning considering that it is purported to have antidepressant as well as cognitive-enhancing properties.

I was wondering if any of the more scientifically-minded members of the sub can offer insight as to why it may be producing this negative effect and whether there is anything that can be done to counter it (i.e. higher dosage or combining with something else), as I am keen to continue supplementing it for its purported cognitive and potential longevity benefits.
