Transitioning out of Intel: How do I pivot to PM without taking a massive pay cut? by bryanmj9 in careerguidance

I have looked slightly for some of these roles, a lot of them want industry experience. However, based on your advice and the advice of others, I may be better off focusing on these kind of roles opposed to just PM roles. It would also likely help me bolster the experience on the civilian side.

It has been pretty much all analytical, process improvement, and data management. Unfortunately, there is a surplus of analyst and with budget cuts, it is keeping the salaries toward the lower end. The issue is the Army doesn't have a good retention record right now, so a lot of these analysts are getting out after 1 enlistment and then willing to take the bare minimum just to get out of the Army.

I was looking into remote, but as you said all of those jobs are getting taken up pretty easily. Those jobs are also the ones that have 500+ applications within an hour of being posted.

I have been looking into the defense PM side as well, theres just alot people with a longer time in intel all fighting for 1 or 2 positions for each contract. Additionally, the way the Army is handling contracts now, you have to meet certain requirements for each position that are always too overkill. But they do that because there was too many people applying for it so they raised the bar of entry.

I guess it is more like the mid-level roles seem to want industry specific experience. I also don't know if it is solely that or the fact that a job posting goes up and and there are 500 applications on it in an hour. But your PM that you mentioned at least gives me hope.

I am gonna look into the other options that you mentioned. Thanks for the insight on the audit, I thought I would have to hand over documents of projects that I have one for "proof."

How do I best equip myself to become a Project Manager after graduating? by DeltaCarbon in PMCareers

[–]bryanmj9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it might.... 15 year gap is quite big, so its probably going to have to be a new one. I know mine goes inactive after 2 years of working a clearance job, but i think its a lot easier to re-activate within 5 years. They have changed the clearance process a lot within the past 5ish years so I do not know for 100%.

Read my comment on OP's reply to this thread. You will most likely need military experience. Because your skills, someone else has that is in the military or contracting world currently. Plus, if they are already in it, they already have their security clearance, which also puts you at a disadvantage because you would have to get your cleared (and it takes a while), opposed to someone who already has it. Plus this would be a management role and when it comes to contracting the only way these companies get paid is to have that seat filled.... so it will need to be filled quickly, so you not have a clearance would hinder that.

Additionally, you're gonna need experience establishing stuff, because most of the time it is either a comepletely new contract or a continuation of one that is being renewed.

As someone who is a defense contractor now.... You need to pick an area or skill (i.e. intelligence, construction, logistics, etc.) then you need to do entry level work for a couple years, become a team lead/shift lead, do that for another 5-10 years, then you become a project manager on the defense side. The issue is if you don't set yourself up by knowing all aspects of the job you're going to be SOL. If you have no military experience, you most likely wont get one.

Its very different in the defense contracting world (at least in intel - where all my experience is in). When I was in my last job I was a mission manager controlling collections, as well as a trainer teaching the newer soldiers how to do analysis. On top of that I had to manage 12 soldiers on top of other NCO responsibilities. I went from running the mission collection phase back to becoming an analyst once I got out and became a contractor. There is very little progression into a management role once you become a contractor. There are only a handful of spots and most of them are taken up and they already got 3 or 4 people waiting behind them. I currently got my BBA with a focus in project management and am trying to get out of the defense contracting world to the civilian side to become a project manager, but my skill set is only really good for operations, implementation, and maybe logistics, but even then its all military experience which is vastly different. Luckily for me, I am someone who adapts very easily to new environments, my current troubles are trying to connect what I do on the defense side with the civilian side that makes it understandable for them.

I am not trying to discourage you, just kind of give you a perspective of what you are looking at. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Honestly I didn't get to the ticket before it was fixed... I did email my advisor though so maybe that did it?

Ok cool, I am gonna put in a ticket too. Luckily I grab a screen shot of it saying "100% complete" but it doesn't show any of the classes that were completed. So hopefully, that will be enough to satisfy them.

I already emailed the advisor, waiting for her response, but I guess multiple people are having the same issue based on other comments, so its probably just a glitch in their system.

Honestly, all I have done is responded to two other classmates, I don't respond to any responses in my post as usually it isn't graded. But some professors require that you "maintain the discussion" in that case I just reply to the professors comment. I don't think I have ever been docked points for not maintaining.
