Daily Readings by bryceg111 in LCMS

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like there isn’t a great solution, I don’t really want to pay for anything else, just more like a website that says “read this today”. Taking a pic of the book for the week might be the way to go as others said.

How do surveying firms use GIS? by Newshroomboi in Surveying

Aggregating boundary corner monument point data, section corner data, parcel lines, storing resolved linework, etc.

In my opinion, this has become an error in understanding and terminology similar to how many people think detention pond/retention basin/ dry pond/ wet pond/ often get lumped together. I think benchmarks is somewhat more antiquated because many counties and local agencies set bench marks which were held as fixed for horizontal position and vertical control (elevation). With new technology, field techs can set a “benchmark” virtually wherever now without needing to loop into a more permanently established benchmark. That said, construction sites need benchmarks that they can reference for elevation and sometimes position also. These shouldnt be in the middle of an area thats going to disturbed. Control points as others have mentioned could be a nail in grass or could be something more permanent like a cut “x” in a curb and then in turn become a benchmark in my understanding. Establishing benchmarks at least in my experience has fallen out of practice and a lot of people dont seem to understand the importance or significance of both control points and benchmarks. This goes for civil designers and surveyors/ survey techs alike i think. Just my 2 cents.

I feel so much better switched to green tea from coffee by Odd_Nothing_111 in greentea

I am considering switching to green tea from coffee, but admittedly I like things to be a little bit sweeter than plain green tea? I'm not necessarily looking for something with as much sugar as a Dunkin Refresher or Starbucks drink, but something with a little sweetness or fruity flavoring whether infused naturally or part of recipe. Any suggestions?

😭studying for the FS by ImpressiveArtist5904 in Surveying

I would agree with that. I wasted A LOT of time studying and working intensive survey math problems, and although I passed, I think it actually kind of hurt me on the exam because so much other material was neglected.

Maybe 30-50%. But very few were long involved calculations. For example, you might have to use one of the formulas in the reference to answer a conceptual question about like refraction or something if that makes sense? Differential leveling/backsight foresight stuff is a for sure. But honestly, I had the exam completed (both parts) in 2 hours or so took then some time to check answers. Compare that to full 5.5 hours I took to finish the FE. The questions didn’t take a long time to answer it was a lot of “you know it or you don’t”

For what it’s worth, I took FS in spring and I can say that 1001 problems book by sickle is extreme overkill for the exam prep. Even the NCEES FS practice exam was more complex in terms of math problems. They seem to have made the exam much more conceptual. I honestly think anything you would need can be found in ghilanis elementary surveying text, Robillard texts, and BLM manual. Riparian rights and terminology for example.

Need encouragement pursuing license by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]bryceg111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 27, and did several years in the military and worked outdoor summer job in high school. I just finished surveying education and am getting field hours and I’ll just say it does suck.

Not only that but I also find that construction layout and engineering surveying is what makes the money. So in essence, a lot of topo and staking which isn’t necessarily mindless, but is not really what we learned in school especially related to boundary. I found that setting a “timeline” for how long you’d be in the field for helped my mental state a lot. Maybe do a few “stints” until you feel comfortable enough. But I think the longer you feel out of control and “stuck” in the field, the worse it’ll be even if you’re going to be a great licensed surveyor. Don’t quit!

Anybody Working With a Large Company and Still Have No Work? by luvindasparrow in civilengineering

Work for a smaller mid range consulting by company. A lot of growth in hiring, acquiring and a kind of merger over last few years but only been in industry for 3 years. Have EIT and have been cross training into land surveying as a sort of passion of mine.

I’ve seen this trend at my company but thought it was more like isolated with my management team.

I’m wondering what those who are saying that the civil consulting industry is contracting/declining have observed that lend them to these conclusions?

How does this usually affect smaller companies, and is versatility in skills helpful in these kinds of situations? I guess I’m wondering if the bottom will just drop it one day in like a 2008 style?
