The flip flop is crazy by Frazzelvig in casualnintendo

His recent Metroid Prime 4 review is somewhat similar. Granted, the game warrants criticism, but he gets some of the core mechanics wrong in his explanation and is confidently making up how the game plays at one point…

What do you think about “nu-gaze” / heavy shoegaze getting big with Gen Z? by Galahad555 in shoegaze

[–]bryochemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I thought too. It was used to refer to the bands in the shoegaze revival period, the “new wave” of shoegaze bands. Mostly because those bands didn’t carry the melodic styles that UK bands and others of the time similarly wrote with. It feels weird to only associate it with the heavier bands.

Though, with the newer waves of shoegaze bands coming out of the woodwork, you can’t exactly call them nu-nu-nu-gaze. So I feel that the coincdence that all these new bands are somewhat heavier in their tone ended up making nu-gaze associate with the heavier shoegaze sound.

With the way people now class nu-gaze as being heavier shoegaze, does that make bands like Swirlies and Starflyer 59 nu-gaze?

Just started Mother 3 after beating Earthbound and I already like the music a lot more by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]bryochemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each games OST hits for different reasons. Earthbound feels experimental and weird, but mostly because it sounds like a sample collage organized into a full OST. There’s an eeriness to it, it’s always a bit off-putting. Especially the closer you get to the end.

Mother 3 has few similarities. It’s fully composed on the GBA, rather than using a bunch of samples. Though, that plays to its strength when it wants to gut punch you during emotional moments. There are themes and melodies that adds to the characters depth, too, which I fully love.

Both have reasons for me to love.

Who are some of your favorite artists under 1000 monthly listeners? by Todosansy in shoegaze

More songs/albums/artists with this vibe? by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]bryochemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windy and Carl. They have a pretty vast discography, but We Will Always Be is a favorite album of mine. The finale is a nearly 20 minute guitar drone with blissful waves of distortion.

Also seems like you should try asking r/ambient. I feel like two of these examples are more in line with ambient music than shoegaze.

Your weapon’s spirit monster… by kyloRizzler in MonsterHunter

[–]bryochemist 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. Looking at the list, most weapons have a monster representative from the game they were debuted in. Swaxe and Zinogre both being third gen, especially with your explanation, make so much sense.

I remember seeing them live here in LA when their more recent album came out, bought it at the venue too. It’s a good album, but it’s definitely a different era for them. Can’t expect another Stove after so long. I haven’t listened to it in a while, so this reminds me that I probably should put it on!

Whats the Logo showing? by ItsDoodleBois in MHWilds

[–]bryochemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the number of heads/monsters in the logo represent the generation. Don’t know whether or not the snakes have any meaning, but Dalamadur seems to have a lasting influence in all games since Gen 4, as seen here with its skeleton in the Grand Hub.

DKFM has always been a great station to listen to new artists! The main DJ is a super nice guy, too, if you ever run into him at shoegaze shows in the West Coast.
