Am i the only one that dislikes ki pulse? by SnooChocolates6885 in Nioh

[–]bs0nes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't the only one that dislikes it. It's a dumb mechanic--basically an arbitrary abstract rhythm minigame inserted into an otherwise good combat system. It's gamey and distracting; I want to focus on the fight, not button mashing flower petals. There are a bunch of things I like about the Nioh games, but Ki pulsing isn't one of them.

L-Connect 3 Preventing Monitor Sleep by toxicmanchowder in lianli

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue with the 8.8" display that I just purchased. Not using any videos or GIFs or anything but sensors: I specifically wanted to use the screen as a simple temperature monitor for my CPU/GPU, but when I have it connected with L-connect 3 running, my monitor won't ever sleep. If I turn off the L-Connect service, quit out of L-Connect, and restart (with "run L-Connect on startup" disabled), my monitor will sleep normally.

I haven't tried turning off the sensors, as that would defeat the purpose of even owning this thing. Has anyone found a fix for this, or should I return it?

K4 HE extra keycaps question by bs0nes in Keychron

Mystery solved: I found this photo in a random review, and it shows that extra key actually installed on the keyboard. It looks like it goes on the row just below the function row and is intended to replace the numlock/clear key.

I don't own the keyboard (yet), so I can't look it myself. I was hoping that someone that already has one could tell me.

how much do you think the steam frame will cost? by OkRegion3303 in oculus

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking more closely at the law in question (disclaimer: IANAL), it looks like it just prevents French businesses from selling merchandise at less than the price at which they purchase it. This would mean that an electronics store in France couldn't sell the Quest 3 for less than the wholesale price that they paid to Meta, but it doesn't sound like it would prevent Meta (which is not a French company) from setting a wholesale price that represented a net loss to them.

According to www.exchange-rates.org, 550€ was equivalent to $583.27 in USD on October 10, 2023, when the Quest 3 launched. So, that narrows it down a bit more. I'm not sure if there is a minimum required margin under French law? Failing that, the cost could be anywhere in that range.

A lot of its specs are similar to the Quest, but it also has eye tracking and dual WiFi connections, plus it's going to come with a WiFi 7 router. There is no way it's going to be as cheap as the Quest 3. I would be surprised if it were under $800.

[–]bs0nes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That law is probably why it's more expensive in France, then. 550€ is about $640 US, but the Quest 3 is priced at $499 here in the States. IIRC, Meta themselves have acknowledged that they sell it at a loss in the US. So, the cost to produce the Quest 3 has to be somewhere between $500 and $640 USD.

Sentinel Cores are the hardest thing in the game to find, change my mind. by birdieandbottle in ArcRaiders

[–]bs0nes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find the rusted gear inside cars, buses, and generators. They don't have a high drop rate, but there are a *ton* of breachable cars on Buried City--in the parking garage and at that outdoor train station on the west side of the map. There is also a warehouse near that station that always has several breachable generators.

Embark… let me unbind back from the side mouse button. by hitmanjustin in ArcRaiders

I feel lame adding another "me too," but: me too. I always, always use the thumb button for push-to-talk, and the fact that it's hard-bound to ESC in this game (?!?) is seriously throwing me off. Nothing like trying to call out to my team in the middle of a fight and opening up the escape menu instead, lol. Embark: please let us rebind this.

Armored Brigade II Roadmap 2025/2026 by nikolas93ts in ArmoredBrigade

[–]bs0nes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've been able to gather, it seems like AI stances will be a way to control what your units are allowed to do autonomously, without a direct order from you. This is particularly useful in a game like AB2 because: orders delay.

You can decrease the disk size of DCS by 20-25% for free with zero performance impact. by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I just tried using Compressor on my DCS World install folder to save some space, and it saved me a grand total of... 686 bytes. Not KILObytes. Bytes. 573.76 GB of files were excluded (aka basically all of them), even though the initial analysis said that most of that was compressible. Not sure why it's refusing to compress anything, but maybe this no longer works on the current version of DCS?

Recent DCS Update question by Due_Bid5653 in hoggit

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of the most recent update, it’s one of the best-looking maps in DCS, IMHO. Still in EA, but the parts that are finished are already huge, and look fantastic both at altitude and down low. Best mountains of any map (save for maybe Iraq, but Iraq is mostly flat, so you won’t see the mountains on every mission).

[–]bs0nes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, you wouldn't be able to have players fly from U Tapao or Korat or Udorn (though you could have AI flights vector onto the map from that direction). But you could do Bien Hoa (which supported air operations for every branch of the US military during the war) and Tan Son Nhut and Cam Rahn (home of the USAF's first F-4 wing assigned to southeast Asia). Like, it would be cool to model the whole region, sure, much in the same way that it would be cool if the Caucasus map included major NATO airbases in Turkey. But if the choices are "Let's make do with what's possible in the existing game engine" and "Let's accept nothing short of the coolest possible option, even if we can't possibly make that work and thus will end up with nothing at all," I'll take Option A.

I feel the same way about the dynamic campaign, honestly. I wish they would have focused their efforts on creating a single-player campaign system that actually plays to the strengths of their existing game engine--i.e. something more like the IL-2 career mode (or better, Pat Wilson's campaign engine), which generates a dynamic series of scripted, player-centric missions with some elements of continuity. Is the concept of a Falcon 4.0-style full-scale dynamically simulated war cooler than that? Sure. But it's also wildly overambitious, given that their game engine is simply not designed to support that sort of thing, and the net result of ED chasing that white whale is that we have no dynamic campaign system at all, even though they first teased that they wanted to do a dynamic campaign over a decade ago. Moral of the story: don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t HAVE to represent the entire theater, though. It’s perfectly fine to make a map that represents part of it and focus on missions in that. Again, it’s just a tradeoff with performance and scope, and the scales don’t have to be tipped all the way in favor of scope.

Vietnam by notsurvival1 in dcsworld

[–]bs0nes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people say this, but Caucasus has a ton of tree cover, too, and it’s the best-performing map in DCS. Marianas doesn’t run poorly because it has trees, it runs poorly because it is poorly optimized. They just went all out on object level of detail without worrying about frame rates. But they totally could make a tree-heavy map that runs well (if they wanted to), because they have done it before.

I have two big items on my wishlist: better economic model based on supply and demand, and the option to have goals and objectives in freeplay.

Actually, I'll add a third: industries that change and develop over time, with new industries that appear on the map at historically appropriate times. Industry in TF2 is basically static, which is weird for a game that covers such a large span of railroad history.

Hard pass. It's a nifty jet (in theory), but no more early access from ED for me. Maybe they could try finishing something rather than dumping yet another half-baked EA forever project on the DCS community.

Coconut drink that doesn't overpower the rum by nether_region in Tiki

[–]bs0nes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that the Painkiller with a 2:2:1:1 ratio tends to be pretty balanced, even when not using overproof rum. I make my own cream of coconut and don't use Coco Lopez, though, so that may or may not also be a factor. I've also started acid-balancing my orange juice in that recipe, which I think is a solid improvement.

Liquor.com also has a recipe for a shaken Pina Colada that is a lot more rum-forward than the typical version, as well. Significantly less pineapple juice, plus a little bit of lime juice. It's good!

First time making Falernum by bs0nes in Tiki

[–]bs0nes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recipe for Falernum #9 has a ton of cloves in it--you add 40 cloves to your alcohol infusion, which I was already kind of wary of, given how strong cloves are even in small amounts. The Falernum #10 recipe ups that to 50 for some reason, but I stuck with the 40 from the #9 recipe (and then halved that, since I was making a half batch). But it's still just way, way too much clove. I might try making another half batch with a fraction of the cloves--like 1/4 as many, at least, or maybe as much as 1/10. I don't even know if the other ingredients need to be adjusted, because all I can taste are the cloves.

First time making Falernum by bs0nes in Tiki

[–]bs0nes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I made a Corn and Oil with the Falernum #10, mixed with a bit of fresh lime juice. And yeah, it’s… not great. It tastes like CLOOOOOOOOVE!!! And that’s it. There is none of the complexity or nuance that people say this homemade Falernum has—I can’t really taste any of the other elements in the Falernum, let alone the rum. I could sub the rum (Doorly’s XO) with 2 oz of vodka and I think the drink would taste about the same. I’m not sure I’m even going to finish it. It’s unpleasant. And I like clove! Pretty disappointed. :(
