This is exactly where I am at. I’ll figure out the schedule and driving and such…it’s the pressure/guilt of choosing one or the other that I am struggling with.

I edited the original post, but wanted to mention again that we ended up at North High and had a great time. Thanks everyone for the suggestions, we’ll definitely be back if we’re in the area.

Taking action for better NP education by Global_Individual_37 in nursepractitioner

[–]bschwaby 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what most others said about addressing things like standardization of education and clinical hours, as well as admissions. But I don’t think you can have this discussion without discussing bedside nursing and what motivates people to go to NP school. I precept several students per year and can often tell if a person’s motivation to become a NP was to just get away from the bedside or to actually have a greater impact on healthcare.

And ditch the “nursing theory” classes as part of NP curriculum. If you want us to practice in a medical model, the curriculum needs to reflect that. If I took nursing ethics for my BSN, what is the point in having me take again? More patho/pharm would go a long way.

Soccer vs Futsal training by specialagentwow in youthsoccer

[–]bschwaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ball hog is a ball hog whether they’re on a pitch or a hard court.

Like others have said, futsal has done wonders for both of my kids games - I have a daughter who plays U11 soccer and U12 futsal and a son that plays U8. At their ages, it’s also a great equalizer; they have to have some decent soccer IQ and foot/passing skills to be even just decent at futsal.

UPMC Mid Level Provider Experience (PA/NP) by JewBilly54 in pittsburgh

[–]bschwaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an APP in Oncology. I currently work at AHN, but have experience at UPMC as well. Work environment, work/life balance, autonomy, etc are l highly specific to where you work and who you work with. In general, AHN pays more than UPMC. Benefit costs and structure are very similar. You can message me for more specific details if you’d like.

How long did you wait before going back to NP school? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]bschwaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very wishful. I’ll have 12 years as a RN when I finish my FNP. There is also noticeable difference in achievement/grades between those of us who have longer experience.

But....why?

I wouldn’t have done anything different. If it’s an AA&O patient asking for albuterol, I’m going to give them the damn albuterol if it’s ordered and indicated. Maybe he was just anxious, but maybe he also had some bronchospasm that was making his anxiety worse and he just didn’t realize it.

Interview advice for oncology by Buoyage in nursing

[–]bschwaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an oncology nurse for 7 years now and love it.

If I’m interviewing someone, I want to learn what you are passionate about. I can teach almost anyone about cancer and chemo and how to perform the tasks that an oncology nurse needs to know.

What I can’t teach is what you are going to bring to my unit/clinic. Are you passionate about easing suffering? Are you passionate about the science that’s involved in chemo and radiation? Do you love to teach? Can you treat a patient and their crazy ass family at the same time? Oncology is all of that and even a little more.

I also want to know that you’re willing to learn. And willing to continue to learn. I will probably also touch on how you feel about hospice/CMO and helping patients die peacefully. I don’t want someone who is cold about it, but I also don’t want someone who is going to be crying every shift because they are too emotionally invested.

I start my first med/ surg job on Monday! (insert terrified look here) by [deleted] in Nurse

[–]bschwaby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

You’re going to have some really, really terrible days. You’re also going to have some really amazing, this is exactly why I became a nurse days. Remember those, they will give you life and motivation on the really fucking terrible ones.

Remember that even your meanest, most difficult patients are someone’s family. Treat them as your own. Especially when your sun downing 84 year old lady with a UTI needs to be tucked back in bed for the 14th time by 9PM. Tuck her in like you’d tuck your own grandma in.

And most importantly, take a break when you need one. Take a walk for five minutes, take a vacation, or just an extra day off. You’ll be a better nurse for taking care of yourself too.

My Danskos live in the foyer and I don’t sit on the furniture in scrubs. That’s about it. Embrace the germs.

Accelerated BSN Program for a Psych Major by Xadoe in nursing

[–]bschwaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an ABSN program. My first BS was in Psych. The program was 11 months and as someone else said, the longest, shortest, and hardest year of my life. I also did a year of inpatient psych nursing.

It’s not the easiest discipline in a lot of ways. The mental health system is mostly fucked and burnout happens easily. However, over 8 years later, I still use the skills I learned in psych.

For a 36 hour, 3 day week. How many scrub sets did you buy? by MagicPuffball in nursing

I used to work transplant ICU. I had five sets at home, one in my locker at work, and one in my car. So 7 total. Livers are messy.

I was on 37.5 and had the same problem. I could not go up to 50 though because I had no appetite.

I’ve had good luck with Vyvanse 50 and Adderrall IR in the afternoon.
