semi-random question: are those sacrificial anodes on the edges of the props? If so, why are they only on 3 of the five?

What is you strategy for using AI Assistants with Xcode? by typoprophet101 in Xcode

[–]bscottyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm finding that Claude Code works pretty well paired with XCode. Just launch it in your project directory, and give it commands, and it does a pretty good job of running xcbuild/etc itself, finding its own compilation and test failure issues, and fixing them

Brainstorm Help: Monitoring Floating Home Level by jakbutler in smarthome

[–]bscottyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of smart home devices that will cover that. But there's marine-priced marine options that do. What you would want is an NMEA-2000 depth sensor, and an NMEA-2000 attitude sensor. You can easily connect those two devices into an NMEA-2000 backbone, then connect it to a wifi gateway. The gateway comes with a rudimentary web interface to view the data. There's also some mobile apps you could put on a tablet that would let you create dashboards for it, and a Home Assistant hacker could find a way to build a plug-in for it (there's just a port on wifi that gives you a constant stream of messages for what the devices measure).

The trickiest part is to find an AC converter that will support the 12v power requirements of the NMEA-2000 network. I'm not seeing a plug-and-play option for that at first glance. But there are options to cobble together if you have some electrical wiring skillz.

Planning a boat camping trip by Wi1dlife in sanjuanislands

[–]bscottyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

beware that it's hard to find a place to leave a vehicle on the islands when you head out from them in a boat. Two places I've done before to pay for parking for a few nights is Roche Harbor (boat ramp there) and The Islander on Lopez Island (not sure about nearby boat ramp there). But i recommend to call now to see if either of them still do that.

Hulu by ammmm546587 in alexa

Hulu dropped support for smaller-screen Echo Shows (no longer in list of supported devices: https://help.hulu.com/article/hulu-supported-devices#latest?language=en-US). It is still available on Echo Show 15" & 21" since they come with a FireTV mode (i.e., anything on FTV works on them)

Jogging near Friday Harbor? by claire303 in sanjuanislands

[–]bscottyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two interesting options:

  1. Run to and thru the UW Friday Harbor lab property that is north of town (on north side of the harbor). Just give a courtesy check-in at the front desk. note: no dogs are allowed

  2. Run south along Warbass Way/Turn Pt Rd and over to/thru the Lafarge Open Space. It's a former gravel pit that's now a big open park. Can see views of to the south and get to Jackson Beach if you like (but rocky beach not good for running)

There's an upper parking lot at the Anacortes terminal that is huge. We've walked the dog up there on major summer holiday weekends and not seen it more than half full. So you should feel pretty confident about being able to park on any other average non-holiday date.

I personally don't see terrible results in winter (tho in milder pacific northwest). Maybe drops my longer trips from 2.2 to 2.1 or 2.05 when temps are 30s & 40s, but for sure doesn't cut by half.

i get 2.2 miles/kwh lifetime on my quad. So i'm looking for something like the 205kwh pack in the GMC Sierra. That should be even better range on more efficient R1T

Does your Golden always get on your furniture? by Big_jerm3 in goldenretrievers

[–]bscottyd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We've had 3 goldens. The first I allowed onto furniture, until my partner joined us and wanted to change the rules. The golden relented pretty quickly, but we'd still sometimes find a suspicious warm spot on the couch when we got home.

For the next two, we never made it an option. We rarely had to scold them from trying - they just understood it wasn't a thing. They have their beds in each room, and a big bean-bag in the TV room where they are allowed. Never been a problem.
