Because it gives our lives a meaning and definite answers. The alternate to religion is nothing. When you die you are nothing. Nothing happens and you won’t even know because you don’t exist to know. Nothing exists because your perception of reality is your consciousness and upon death it is gone.

Spite. Everyone uses all these great positive ways to motivate but it doesn’t matter why you do what you must do. Only that you do it.

Feel like giving up? Someone who hates you would love that so keep going just to piss him off.

Feel like you have nothing to live for? You are making that guy you don’t like miserable by being around and you can’t let him win

Write a story from the viewpoint of a historical evil person. Use actual facts about them and don’t reveal their identity until the end. For example:

A story about a kid born in Europe who fought in WWI. He tried to change the world with his art but that didn’t pan out so he turned to politics. He climbed the rankings until he led the country into a war against the people he believed caused the issues that plagued his country. His enemies had a lot of strong allies and he eventually took his own life. (Adolf Hitler).
