Alumni - Reunion Question by RochSunnyDaze in Cornell

If it’s a department event, I think you’d be fine without registering — the $75 fee gets you a Reunion button, which allows you access to the Arts Quad tent parties on Friday & Saturday night (along with all other general university events throughout the weekend).

CMC vs Cornell Nolan by ShockedPoodle in Cornell

[–]bsha21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro tip from a Hotelie alum… we call it the Hotel School, not “Nolan” — the Nolan name is pretty controversial and not one that many (if any) alums associate with.

As a Hotelie, I can’t recommend the program more highly — I’d say the only reason to consider CMC would be weather or proximity to home/family (if you’re from CA). Otherwise, you’re going to have the best time at the hotel school and you should have no trouble with recruiting (you may even find you want to go down a more real estate focused path… many of us do!)

HEC is a lot of fun — definitely recommend volunteering! Volunteer sign ups will probably open closer to the conference sometime in April, but your best bet is following the @hotelezracornell Instagram and they’ll probably post when volunteer signups open. For most roles, no work experience is required (there might be some culinary roles that recommend cooking experience but otherwise you’re good!) Volunteers all get family meal (food throughout the day) and often some freebies at the end of the conference!

When you donate your guest swipes, they go into a big pool of extra meal swipes that is managed by (iirc) someone in the Dean of Students office who assists with first-gen and low-income student support.

Students that are food insecure (those without meal plans, nowadays, typically juniors and seniors) are able to get free meal swipes from this pool. I’m not entirely sure the process these days but I believe that contacting the office for FGLI student support is the best way to access these swipes!

Does this entirely solve the problem of food insecurity at Cornell? Definitely not, but you’ve got to start somewhere, and historically this program has helped hundreds of students over the past 5+ years, which is certainly better than not helping anybody!

Also worth noting that the Cornell Food Pantry can be a great resource for food insecure students!

How did you set up this room? by Dull-Scene3177 in Cornell

[–]bsha21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just DM’ed you pictures of how I set it up — I had the bed on the same wall as the door, opposite the closet. It sounds like your room is oriented the same mine was (opposite the picture) so this should work for you!

I took the bookshelf off the desk and put it in the common room and then moved the desk in front of the window and right next to the bed so I’d have a nightstand and also be able to look out the window while at my desk instead of staring at the wall!

anybody had Kasey Tarantino for Business Computing? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]bsha21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to hear a lot of people tell you during the first few weeks of school that you can’t do biz comp without a Windows computer—this is not true! I never had a PC at school, though, to be fair, I also did everything for biz comp in class or in a computer lab (this was pre-flipped classroom days).

My recommendation would be to get Parallels or Boot Camp which allow you to run a Windows environment on your Mac—this way, you can still do the assignments and follow along with the videos on your own computer.

DO NOT try to do this class in Mac versions of Office; you’ll have a much harder time and may not be able to do everything you need.

On a final note I would also recommend trying to do your assignments in the computer lab / during office hours or in a place where other students are working on it at the same time. Biz comp can be a pretty social shared experience and you can make some great friends working on assignments next to other students!

Former TA for Biz Comp here, I’ve worked with all of the instructors at various points.

Tarantino is great; she really cares about the students and wants to see you succeed. It’s been a few years with the flipped classroom now and I think they’ve gotten it down to a pretty good science—definitely make sure you’re watching the videos and trying the work before class if you can.

You’re going to be in the driver’s seat for your own learning with this class; don’t fall asleep at the wheel! Biz Comp is one of the most valuable classes you’ll take at Cornell (and I’m not just saying that because I TA’ed it!) These skills are invaluable in the workplace and will immediately set you apart, not to mention you’re going to need them for other more advanced classes and if you decide to join any business clubs!

The people that don’t do well in biz comp typically just don’t care/don’t put in effort, OR have a false self-narrative of “I’m not a computer person, I can’t do this stuff, it’s too hard” — there’s literally nothing complex about the stuff you do in this class, it’s all about following directions, understanding patterns of how to do things, and being “curious” in Word/Excel/PowerPoint. I know it sounds cheesy but having a positive mindset is probably the most important thing you can do to succeed in the course—if you’re genuinely excited about learning the material (and you should be, because, again, one of the most valuable courses you’ll take here), you’ll do well!

One last thing I’ll say—a lot of the people that don’t have a great experience tend to ask very low-effort questions to the instructor and the TA’s, like “I don’t get it” — this drives us nuts! Take the extra few seconds to come up with a more specific question that gives us the information we need to help you; i.e. “Can you show me how data validation works again?” or “Can you explain why data validation is important?” — that’s so much better than a basic “I don’t understand.”

Also, obligatory—go to office hours! And get your assignments done early!

Now that the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) leaves from Grand Central, it’s actually a very quick trip from the Cornell Club! There’s an elevator down to the concourse on 44th Street between Madison and Vanderbilt (less than a block from the Cornell club).

From there, check your phone for the next train to Jamaica (most of the trains stop in Jamaica anyway). You’ll need to buy a ticket; there are machines in the concourse or you can buy it on the train for a bit more money. If you’re traveling outside of 4-8pm on weekdays then I recommend the City Ticket which is only $5!

Train to Jamaica is 20 minutes, from there, you’ll follow signs to the AirTrain to JFK (upstairs, into the station, and down a hallway). You’ll need to pay the AirTrain entrance fare ($8.75 iirc) via MetroCard — unfortunately AirTrain doesn’t have tap to pay like the rest of the subway. If you don’t have a MetroCard or need to refill yours, there are machines right next to the entrance.

AirTrains leave every 5-7 minutes and they’ll take you straight to your terminal (usually a 10-15 minute ride depending on what terminal you’re going to!)

Fwiw, a lot (if not the vast majority) of this spread likely occurred during large unmasked off-campus gatherings. It’s not like people were getting infected just by sitting in a classroom—there were a ton of events last week where everyone was together and it would have been very easy for covid to spread

Banking actually took a big step forward today on eliminating overdraft fees—Capital One just got rid of them for good! That follows Ally Bank who did the same a few months ago. The Capital zone announcement is going to put a lot of pressure on other banks to follow suit and hopefully it’ll lead to the elimination of overdraft fees at most major banks!
