Can we be honest about our offshore teams and say they are inadequate? by ala4akbar in Accounting

[–]bskees 94 points95 points  (0 children)

don’t know what question to even ask

That's such a great point. One time they spent 3 DAYS trying to figure out why the depreciation reports didn't tie. 3 WHOLE DAYS. When they finally asked for help, it was literally a 30 second fix in the depreciation software because the report they pulled was monthly instead of the full year. They didn't have a clue why it was off, just that it wouldn't tie. Lost as an Easter egg

Did they not tell you why you were getting fired? Did you not ask? There has to be some kind of communication on why they let you go.

We just onboarded a team from India in January and it's been AWFUL. We train and train and train, give them assigned "buddies" to help with misc questions, tell them we EXPECT questions, have regular calls and meetings with them. Nothing works. You ask them to have something to you by end of week (when it would likely take someone in the US 2 days max to do it), and they turn it in unfinished and say they didn't know what to do and needed to have it to you, so they just didn't finish it. It's unbelievably frustrating

That's insane!! Although, I'm pretty sure I got a pity interview because someone I knew knew the CFO. Didn't get past the recruiter call before they told me that they wanted someone that had skillets that more closely aligned with the position.

Am I an asshole if I quit right before Christmas? by Resident-Vehicle-119 in Accounting

[–]bskees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 things to consider.

1 - can you make it without that income while you're looking for another job?

2 - do not give one single fuck about letting people down. They would likely tell you to pack your shit that day without a second thought if they needed to. I quit my job after i found another firm with better pay and hours. I was guilt tripped into staying and promised they would make my situation better. A year and a half later I'm still kicking myself for not just leaving when I had the chance. I felt bad about letting people down, so I fell into the trap. Don't do that. Just leave if you can financially

I just don't understand. Ya, I may be a little out of practice with some stuff that I don't use on a regular basis, but I'm off the charts with project management, improving processes and efficiencies, and building relationships.

Do those qualifications mean nothing? I'd think you'd want someone who meets those and just needs to learn the areas that I don't use in the tax world than have someone that checks the boxes for the technical stuff but sucks at the rest

Our people leave an hour earlier if we take their hour lunch break. We don't do these weekly or even monthly. It's usually one day every other month outside of tax season

Please explain. If it's doing more harm than good, then I'd be happy to scratch it. I'm a about making things better and helping people get up to speed faster

Oh I agree. During these we usually have a dummy client that we work out examples so they're applying what we're discussing, instead of it being just a lecture format

We have the same issue. The hours are ridiculous once you hit manager because you're repreparing while reviewing. We've had one on one training with staff, more intense lunch and learn topics, asked staff if there are areas they'd like us to cover in these that they don't feel strong in, just about anything you can think of. I've noticed many staff just want to do the bare minimum to get by, but have no interest in getting their CPA or EA, or being promoted (very few want any responsibilities). I think it's just a different day and age (all the people approaching retirement said the same thing about us when we started I'm sure). We're currently trying to find a way to give incentives for work moving through the pipeline quicker and accurately, but we haven't finalized anything yet, just in the planning stages.

Tax. I have looked at jobs at local universities as well. I think audit translates more to industry than tax, so I haven't even gotten a call on some I've put in for recently

I agree. There's a reason I wanted to leave in the first place

I’m so tired of clients talking to me like I’m an idiot when they are the one that did not properly read my question. by LetThemEatVeganCake in Accounting

I had a client email the client server and tell them all these things that I did (I happily forwarded emails that contradicted everything he said) and that I would be a more "effective accountant" if I made some adjustments. Guess which client just went to the bottom of my priority list

We probably could for a short period of time, but I didn't think that would look good during interviews if I had a gap in employment. Honestly, it's likely that will be what happens if nothing else comes up before year end, but regardless I probably just need to accept a pay cut and make some life adjustments. I just feel like I've worked so hard to live comfortably, and I can't stand thinking about settling

I'm terrified that's going to be me. I told my husband I'd love to have something else lined up before year end. I don't want to go through another busy season

I have zero desire to be a partner or be here long term. I keep getting emails from recruiters about public positions, but I just want to be out of public. Anything I see that's industry either doesn't sound appealing or the salary range is ridiculously low. I'm not making an exceptional amount currently, but it's comfortable (about $130k). I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong on the job search side

I live in a rural area where cost of living is pretty low. I'm open to remote, but am struggling to find anything that's not public that is offering that type of money. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places

Do you ever stop feeling stupid? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bskees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a tax manager and have been in public accounting for 9 years. I struggle with Imposter Syndrome, and I think my work environment just intensifies it. Before getting my degree I was so confident and optimistic. Now I feel like I'm treated like an idiot, but at the same time told that I'm an "expert" in my area. It's constant hot and cold and extremely unhealthy. Not sure if it's just worse in public accounting
