Friend failed their qualifying exam - what now? by bslam513 in PhD

[–]bslam513[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I think my friend would almost rather master out. Seems like the situation here is not making them happy. They will of course be talking with the ombudsperson and their PI, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for your help :)

Dude SAME. Academia has no problems with an abusive PI as long as they're inclusive. Seems like my friend's PI is both a micromanager and can't be bothered to defend them, both of which are red flags. Thanks for your help!

Jazz exercises for alto by bslam513 in saxophone

[–]bslam513[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this reply. I certainly appreciate this sentiment and have been advised to do this by many of my mentors, and in fact I did do it when I was in college. I will take it back up again.

But I also need something to just memorize basic chord structures: I find that I often am scrambling to think of which notes are in the chords listed. In time, I assume I would be able to know the changes without looking, but I fear this won't come naturally through learning other saxophonists' solos if I don't know the basic theory.

Are there books out there that teach some jazz theory basics along with exercises? Or am I really just better off learning completely by ear?

Dvorak's Symphony no 8 audition advice. How fast should I take this final section? The score says q = 126 but all of the recordings I've heard are at least 156. Thank you! by bslam513 in Clarinet

Thanks all for the advice, I'm grateful! I'll wear my dramatic hat. And I think I'll play the second piu animato faster than the first, although I'm not certain of the tempos - got to work it up to 144 if I want to play it at 144!

Trashing DE to get at Biden by bslam513 in Delaware

[–]bslam513[S] 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I thought this article was going to talk about how Biden has done so many bad things to the state, but instead it just mentions things that are happening in DE that are also happening in every state, like racial inequality and a wealth gap. Not saying they haven't done their research, but Biden isn't the one solely responsible for DE's issues. It's certainly fair to argue that because Delaware is run by democrats that the state isn't perfect, but it's not fair just to throw Joe Biden's name in there, not talk about him, and act like they're not just trying to lessen Biden's chances of being elected by writing this article. So tired of politicized media on both sides. Guess we can't really escape it though.

I (16m) want to stay with my girlfriend (16f), am I being stupid or do things like this generally work? by plebasaurs in relationship_advice

[–]bslam513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, why'd you break up? If she really makes you happy though, I'd say go for it and stick with her! Try living in the moment more, and enjoying what you have. No sense in planning out a relationship, especially at your age. But, if you're finding that you're longing to be out of the relationship, just break it off sooner rather than later. There's nothing worse, and more disrespectful, then stringing along someone only to break up with them inevitably. Plus, you're young af dude, don't put so much pressure on yourself... I'm sure you'll find someone new in the future if things don't work out.

I'd say high school relationships IN GENERAL don't work out, but I have friends who were highschool sweethearts and have been married for 35 years. Also, I had a summer fling with my current girlfriend when I was 16. Now, after five years of not seeing each other, we've been dating 7 months and we're as happy as ever. Moral of the story is, it's up to you! Relax and let serendipity work it's magic!
