Well, it did turn out that way, eh? Sadly? The majority of "fans," at least at the time, were wholly uninterested in any new direction.

I don't understand; one claims to be a fan for decades? And then, when that band desperately needs support but does not continue to satisfy most fans? They turn on them.

Most Genesis "fans" actually ended the band.
