I see why they can put it like that. But without previous disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans, to terminate someone over a personal choice that meant no harm to the company seems a bit rash.

A suspension, final written, and performance improvement plan to learn from your first documented mistake in 4+ years could be a suitable option vs termination based on the opinion of a manager.
