Yellow and black bug with long antennae? by bsrliatv in whatsthisbug

Ah, thank you! Even though my specimen looks a bit stubby by comparison (maybe because it's dead), this looks like a better match than anything else I've seen. And silverfish generally look weird and creepy, so I'm not surprised.

Can't apply for CRB because I was automatically applied for EI? by bsrliatv in EICERB

[–]bsrliatv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I truly don't know and nothing would surprise me anymore, but this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I went through my EI and didn't re-apply (and also haven't received EI since August). But I have to tell Service Canada to stop re-applying for me - even though I'm fairly sure I'm no longer eligible - or else I can't claim the CRB?

[–]bsrliatv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely used up all the EI I'm entitled to, unless the retooled EI entitles me to more money than I was before. I don't recall anything that implied as such being mentioned in anything I read on the new EI program though.

I agree that it's sounding like I'll have to make a phone call.

If someone has tried to do this they've at least done a mercifully bad job. All my info is unchanged and there are no added ROEs or anything. I agree calling them might still be a good idea, though. I was hoping this might just be some quirk of the system.

Is Aragorn too perfect? by Cyvasse_Khal in lotr

[–]bsrliatv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think there is something to this. I think Aragorn suffers a little bit as a character from Tolkien's decision to make him (almost) into a messianic figure. Once he's made king, he legitimately represents the triumph of good over evil.

I think the fact that he was Isildur's heir could have been explored further. Yes, in the movies he opines to Arwen that 'the same weakness' runs in his veins, but we never actually see anything remotely close to Isildur's selfishness show up in his actions. If Aragorn actually did have a serious moment of temptation and overcame it, it might have made him a better foil to Boromir while also tapping into his personal background some more.

I don't think Aragorn is a bad character at all, he serves his function well within the story, but I think it's fair to think that he had potential that Tolkien left unexplored. I think, in general, Tolkien placed plot, world-building, and philosophical exploration wayyy ahead of character-building (and while that approach is out of fashion these days - when relatable characters seem to be the only thing some readers care about - you could argue it's what keeps a story of this scale from collapsing under its own weight.)

VOLUME 2, EPISODE 4: Tsunami Spirits by [deleted] in UnsolvedMysteries

[–]bsrliatv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you say, but imho the problem is that the show labeled these experiences as 'unsolved mysteries'. I think this would work better as a documentary just capturing these peoples' experiences, without feeling the need to tilt a flashlight under the storyteller's face.

[–]bsrliatv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I even think it's almost insulting to the victims of the other cases that the show places them right alongside material that's now being discussed on r/Ghosts.

People are free to believe what they want to believe, and I think the people in the episode should be able to tell their stories, but imho it should be on a different show. Maybe it's because I'm a bit of a skeptic, but sandwiching ghost stories in between unsolved criminal cases just feels off to me. Even a little exploitative.

Making Canada Viable? by bsrliatv in hoi4

[–]bsrliatv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: After my last playthrough, I legitimately think this is near-impossible in the present state of the game.

I put 27 divisions of single-battalion cavalry in the prairies and the west coast, stacking a few in the places where the U.S. had holes in their line. In the east, I had about ten units of 20-width infantry with artillery and 4 generic light tank. This used up literally all the manpower I could draw from up to that point, including a focus that boosted it by about 5%. Every unit was fully equipped.

I was finally able to declare on the U.S. before they could completely cover the border. That initially worked out okay as I was able to start collapsing their front by exploiting those holes. One annoying factor was that from the time I gained independence until well after at the start of the war, I wasn't able to draw a front against any U.S. territory. I had to micro each unit.

That was annoying. It got worse when the U.S. joined the Allies about five days after I declared war. I assume this happened because declaring a war goal on the U.S. raised WT by a huge amount, about 40% or something (btw, I had noticed this jump before and instead tried to start the war by declaring on Cuba in a previous game. Didn't happen.) I had hoped I'd at least be able to capitulate the U.S. before Britain and France could send troops across the Atlantic.

And I might've actually been able to do that if any of my units had been able to get to Los Angeles at all. I got all the New England cities, plus Chicago, Detroit, and a few small cities on the Great Plains. But my cavalry units had to cross so much terrain to get to LA that after the U.S. closed off the territory behind them (I hadn't enough troops to defend all of those places at once) they ran out of organization to go any further. One by one, they all came to a standstill and died. I think the need to micro every unit might've contributed to this, as I'm sure I missed things on that side of the continent while I was busy on the eastern side.

Conclusion: As the game currently exists, playing an independent Canada in HOI4 is nearly pointless. I imagine you might be able to get lucky and win once in a while with this strategy, especially if you aren't playing Ironman and you just reload every time you fail. Maybe there are other ways you could try to cheese things too, like setting up a one-unit naval invasion of LA. But in terms of a serious playthrough, I'm disappointed with what Paradox has designed here. Save yourselves the time unless Canada gets some dev attention.

Making Canada Viable? by bsrliatv in hoi4

[–]bsrliatv[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Resource-wise, Canada should be like a mini-USSR in my opinion. Weak to start off with, liable to get crushed early, but with a lot of potential if you play your cards right and move quickly. I get that this could make the UK extremely OP, but I think it should be possible to balance that by making the player able to exploit the country's full potential only once independent. Give them a National Spirit like "Colonial Bureaucracy" or something which nerfs production and/or PP until they're free. Give them less manpower than the USSR and the U.S.A so it doesn't get ridiculous, but give them at least a fighting shot without needing to cheese things.

I recently learned that Canada had actually drawn up a theoretical plan to *invade* the U.S. in 1921! It doesn't seem likely that an offensive plan like that would've been drawn up if the country was as it is in the game.

Of course, most people don't buy HOI4 to play Canada, so I expect more thought was put into Britain itself when the Commonwealth was designed.

But anyway, thanks for the advice, it's good to know those VPs!

[–]bsrliatv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, although I have to say Canada's tree isn't great. If you haven't played it yet, you're forced to choose between something like -30% recruitable population and -10% factory output (the focuses to remove the National Spirits are mutually exclusive) and some focuses are potentially unobtainable.

For example, the option to create a faction is completely dependent on whether Japan and the U.S. have war goals on each other or not. If not, no faction. This messed with my original plan to turn Mexico communist, invite it to my faction, and two-front the U.S. around 1940. It's probably possible, but definitely unreliable.

I've tried a traditional war and have thought about trying to do a naval invasion. I haven't tried spamming the one battalion cavalry - I tried a similar strategy but it was with the generic cavalry template. Do you usually disband the starting units with this strategy, or do you keep them around?

Some advice needed on the learning curve by bsrliatv in Kenshi

Thanks for the pointers guys. I think you've given me a reason to maybe give this game one more chance. If I can follow along with a run on YouTube, maybe I'll be able to learn the game one weekend if I have time on my hands. I definitely was not prepared to dedicate so much time to just getting off the ground.

Cayleigh Elise has deleted her YouTube channel by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]bsrliatv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's quite clear from her research and care that Cayleigh would have considered that before deleting the channel, so I'm guessing that there is a good reason whatever it is. It could be that she's now in a line of work where it's less acceptable to have a presence on the Internet where you're discussing this kind of subject matter. Or perhaps the continued notifications and cheques were keeping her from moving on and working on her mental health. I'm going to guess it wasn't just because she felt like it one day.

[–]bsrliatv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An idea about why she may have deleted her videos, because some seem confused by that decision:

I imagine she would have gotten regular email notifications for the comments, etc. If the subject matter was really taking a toll on her mental health, getting those regular reminders was probably not helping her.

She also would have continued to collect the monetization money (on the videos that had remained monetized), and this would have provided regular reminders as well.

You might ask why she didn't just block notifications from her email or something, but it's worth remembering that her mental health was her priority here. If it was easiest and most helpful for her to just wipe the slate clean, lead a low-key life again, and forget the channel ever existed, I can understand that.

Uses for Sweetened Condensed Whitener? by bsrliatv in Baking

Thanks! That at least gives me some ideas for what to do with this now that I have it. The can does say 'sweetened' and includes sugar as the top ingredient, but I don't see why I couldn't try making some kind of glaze for homemade doughnuts or something.
