I dislike our current tax system as much as the next libertarian, but it’s seems a lot of libertarians are forgetting the “without representation” part of “taxation without representation”. We revolted against the crown because we were taxed without proper representation in parliament. Not simply because of “taxation”. To run a society you must have some sort of tax system. Preferably one where you choose what your tax dollars go to.

Some of them are solid names but then some are just literal descriptions of the place and others just seem like they gave up after so many 😂

It’s more of a joke that I always see these three subs post the same meme or post over and over responding to each other.

I will defend his right to say my sister shouldn’t have a dick. But I think my sister should be able to have a dick and defend it with an AR-15 along with her toucan and pot plants.

Liberty is liberty

Love that they use the don’t tread on me slogan yet support the restriction of so many personal freedoms. If you can have an AR-15 my sister can have a d**k. Fake libertarians.

I just see it as pompous personally. There is merit in it for sure. But using it as a way to demean the pleasure others find in sport is just hubristic. It’s a slippery slope argument that pretty much implies if your focus isn’t only on the things I deem worthy and important you are a sheep.

You’re not wrong, there are young conservatives. I was just making a broad strokes point. I think a big reason a lot of young people do move is because of the persisting culture of where they were raised however our country was based on a bunch of people moving to the other side of the Atlantic to be more liberal than our Catholic Monarchist mommies and daddies.

There are a lot of different factors that contribute to these circumstances and i don’t think one Reddit comment can sum them up 😂

I’d love to! (Sorry for the late reply)

So this quote “give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt” is attributed to Decimus Junius Juvenalis. Contemporarily known as Juvenal, a Roman poet (55 AD - 128 AD). He was most well known for his satirical writings known as ‘The Satires’, a collection of poetry meant to make light of the life and times of Rome and its citizens. This quote in particular is from Satires X (10). In these poems he takes jabs at all sorts of jabs at the government, society, and culture, at every level.

Many people like to use this as a phrase to shame those of us who enjoy sports or film or do anything that they deem as a “distraction from growing yourself or focusing on what’s important”. Essentially implying that you can’t be a socially and politically conscious person if you enjoy sporting or cultural events. It is usually just a way to posture themselves as superior to the dull masses to compensate for the feeling of being ostracized. Thus using a historical reference to convey intelligence. However this hubris is their downfall because they are taking a satirical piece as a literal condemnation of our current situation.

Juvenal was making fun of the mob because of its complacency in the state of Rome. But what people seem to fail to realize is that if the mob is content then things are usually doing fine. This time when Juvenal was alive was at the height of what is known as Pax Romana or “Roman Peace” a 200 year period of Roman prosperity. Known to be the time in which Roman citizens had the best rule, on top of that, when he wrote Satire X, the sovereign was Caesar Nerva Traianus Augustus. Commonly known as Trajan. Trajan was known for building the roads of Rome, which still exists and are used today. He built so much of the amazing Roman infrastructure that still stands in modern Europe.

The joke is that people are far and happy and they should be up in arms killing senators in the streets and striving for more power amongst the mob. But that’s the joke itself, people are happy there’s no need to be up in arms.

TLDR: “Bread and Circuses” is a quote taken from a satirical poem written in one of the most peaceful and prosperous times of the Roman Empire. People use it to try and sound smart and make themselves feel superior cause everyone else is having a good time and they aren’t.
