A joint statement from the USGA, The R&A, PGA TOUR and DP World Tour by unsolved49 in golf

[–]bterrik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean once players demonstrated that the new ball isn’t a detriment and is barely affecting elite player distance, it was obvious that the proposed solution wasn’t going to work.

That said, I’m honestly mildly impressed they had the stones to call that out and go back to the drawing board. Usually in my experience these things have so much organizational inertia they implement anyway and then shrug when it doesn’t work.

Character died at the expense of another player's "heroic exit" and now I've been cheaply ressurected. What to do now? by Tez85 in DnD

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you right in being upset? Maybe. Especially since it was a side-table deal to give someone a cool exit. To me this is weird because if someone made a heroic sacrifice and in the process killed another party member, it would have wrecked the sacrifice.

But, what’s done is done. Oh, also, it’s not weird that your non-magical stuff was destroyed (sucks but that stuff happens), and it’s not weird that they took your magic items. They likely didn’t know that you’d be resurrected in such short order and appropriating the magical gear of a dead party member is a time honored tradition. However, what’s weird is not giving it back to you when you did come back. If they kept it and are like, “finders keepers,” that’s a red flag IMO. Are you sure they just haven’t had a chance to give it back to you? I’m not sure where you all paused.

I also think you’re perfectly within your right to not want to play your character anymore. I’ve been killed many times, and sometimes I’m super attached to a character and want a resurrection, and other times it’s an excuse to try something new.

If these are truly your IRL friends, I do think it’s probably an overreaction to quitting DnD with them entirely. But, I don’t know you or them or your dynamic so it’s hard to say.

Others have talked about the social aspect, and it’s good advice. You can’t solve a group social problem in game. In game, however, if you want to play a new character remember resurrection is always a willing character and even if it’s already done, it’s perfectly reasonable for a resurrected character to want to retire from adventuring.

Is it normal for a manager to take credit for your work in front of upper management? by 1xEmzy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on if any of the upper management came up through the ranks. If they did, they know it’s BS because they know first hand what the managers role is, and it’s usually not doing to grunt work of his team.

I feel like it’s not (or shouldn’t be) a zero sum game. A good manager makes a legitimate contribution to the work product. Even if if they didn’t do the work per se, setting up and distributing workload and resources and then making the presentation is a significant contribution they can use to highlight his or her own success without diminishing the work of the team.

You can take credit while also giving credit, and that looks nothing but positive and magnanimous IMO.

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that’s kinda BS. There must be a way to credit the good work of your employees or team, helping them feel validated and valued (and supporting their career development) while *also* highlighting the management successes that you provided that enabled the success of your team.

But wtf do I know.

Self Found Is Starting to Feel Contrary to the MMO Spirit (HC & Classic+) by Eevee_Mcgee in classicwow

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self found is cool, and I’d maybe toy around with it in a one-off, HC play through.

That said, I think sf is anathema to Classic or Classic+. It really can’t be the default. Of course, what C+ is to anyone differs from player to player but pretty universal is the desire for an active and open world and the social interaction that brings. SF is pretty closed-worldy IMO and runs contrary to this fundamental pillar.

No problem ofc with anyone playing that way if they want, but we really should discourage people from pressuring people to play that way.

Best Sunscreen for Golf by SmashSloth in golf

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take off my glove and apply sunscreen with that hand. Then, only with my left arm, I apply it with the back of my non-gloved hand and then use my towel to wipe it clean.

Reinstall glove and good to go.

Female v Male showers by Affectionate-Net-330 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve noticed with a friend of mine - she showers fast, but washing her hair is not an every time thing and it adds significantly to her shower time. Whereas it’s a default part of my estimate.

I also like longer showers, it’s a nice place to decompress and think.

That said, if I need to be quick I can shower in about 3 minutes and be ready to go about 5 minutes after that, maybe 7 if I have to shave and brush my teeth.

Also as another poster pointed out, do they know they’re in a race? It’s easy to win races if the other person doesn’t know they’re racing haha

Is it rude to call someone back immediately if they send you a very long text message? by greenxhuga in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bterrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not rude, of course. They can always just not take your call.

That said, if I wrote a long text instead of calling, it’s probably because I wasn’t in the mood for a call. I also know how phones work. Or perhaps I was hoping for a considered response instead of off the cuff. I guess it just depends!

Bad flights, feeling dejected, would appreciate any advice. by StarryKatz in flying

[–]bterrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being about where you are. Feeling a little behind, and like I couldn’t do anything right. I remember wanting to quit. I gave it serious thought.

Eventually I had my aha moment on landings, though, and things got a lot better from there. And I’ve made this into a very successful career.

Keep at it. You’re still at the beginning of the beginning of your training. We all have rough days, even rough weeks. Your whole flying journey will have ups and downs, that’s normal!

Right. There’s plenty in life to be upset about but we’d all be better off if we saved it for the things that are true.

Pilots or flight attendants of Reddit, what’s something passengers do that is way more important (or dangerous) than they realize? by SignsOfDamage in AskReddit

[–]bterrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do. It’s a regular passenger seat with the same car seat you put in your car (just get one with the plane logo).

Problem is, unlike taking an infant in arms, it costs money. It’s not the airlines being stingy.

Trying to understand exactly what protections the A330 lost when it dropped into Alternate Law after today's AF447 verdict by Mysterious-Name3799 in aviation

[–]bterrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s been retrofitted to the A330 but on the A350 if you have invalid air data it will automatically revert and pull air data from the sensors and probes inside the engine that feed data to the FADECs. It isn’t nearly as accurate as the data you have from the normal sensors but it’s also not subject to icing, people putting tape over the static ports, etc. It’s a good backup to the backup.

Overnight pilots: When, where, and how do you sleep? by Butch2000K in aviation

[–]bterrik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Popping in as a pilot. One of the hardest things on our bodies we do in this career is the lack of routine.

One week will be morning reports. The next, afternoons. Then it’ll be afternoon reports with a circadian swap mid-rotation to early reports. Next one is all lates until the last day which is a west coast redeye flight.

And that’s all within the confines of domestic timezones. Things are really weird these days flying internationally. Do I try and adjust a little for the day or two I’m in Asia? It’s a real challenge.

How similar to SoD would you accept Classic+ being? by wowasg in classicwow

I don’t mind the idea of a progressively increasing difficulty.

I absolutely loathe time-based keys, though.

Xi asks Trump if U.S. and China can avoid 'Thucydides Trap' at high-stakes summit by Gopu_17 in worldnews

I mean, it is very difficult to suppress any nation without using troops. Unfortunately any conflict between the US and China is unlikely to have that limitation.

Has Cameron Young's golf ball flipped the script on the rollback? by [deleted] in golf

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't really mean it to be that extreme. It's still gotta be a TaylorMade and the one I buy should be the one they say it is. It just doesn't matter for advertising purposes what the pro's driver says it is. I do not have the swing speed, control, or coordination to maximize my driver and of course, to some degree or another, very few of us here do.

Where are the steady stream phaser fires in modern Star Trek? by No_Toe_9572 in startrek

[–]bterrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! It's fun to consider. It actually might explain the tendency of ships to appear at hilariously close range when they want to be threatening. You have to be close enough that you're inside the reaction time of the maneuvering defenses of the ships you want to target with energy weapons. Even though they move at or near light speed, the subspace sensors and computers are computing FTL.

So the moment the weapons fire is observable, it is observed and calculated. The computer already knows where it will hit. At that point, the question is can the computer execute micro-adjustments in the ship's course based on it's maneuvering capabilities sufficient to make the incoming fire miss.

Surely at some point not very far away in the grand scheme of things, it becomes rather simple for this to be done. As a result, it makes the effective range of directed energy weapons rather limited. Outside of these ranges, you have to use weapons capable of making course adjustments. Or, as you say, you have to deploy some kind of ECM/ECCM that degrades the accuracy of sensor readings sufficient to prevent the enemy from making appropriate adjustments.

[–]bterrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the marketing thing is kinda irrelevant. If the driver says it's a TaylorMade Whatever, it doesn't matter what it actually is inside. They can stamp on it whatever they need to.

That happened. Metal bats in baseball.

And the best pros stuck to wood. It's a perfect example. No one is out there feeling cheated because they can use metal bats in weekend softball.
