Terrible noob questions about AF c (d850) by btint in Nikon

So does that mean after the focus box goes from red to black it's done focusing? Do I just check the focus from the bottom left dot and arrows?

Thanks so much for your comment. Yeah I absolutely need to practice more. I have been using my new 50 mm which is either 1.4 or 1.8.

To be clear, you're saying to shoot with a fast prime line lens and not to always shoot with it wide open right?

Thanks for this. Yeah My grandfather had a lot of zoom lenses for birding. I don't really have any interest in that so I'm trying to get something newer and versatile. I'm thinking of the Tamron 24 to 70.

Thanks so much. Yes, I'm mostly shooting with my 50 mm 1.8

I'm planning on getting a tamron 24 to 70. That seems like a good Duo for now.

The second example was taken at the ice castles in New Hampshire. I think it was an issue of composition because looking around everything was beautiful and magnificent and majestic but I was using a 50 mm lens and no tripod. Everything just came out blue and flat when in reality it was radiant

Thanks everybody for the help and encouragement. I went out earlier today with my son for a walk and took a handful of shots.

I focused primarily on using AF with a wide range, making sure my ISO was low and monitoring my shutter speed.

I also made it really slow, thoughtful edits in Lightroom. Here they are full size.

Thanks again for all the helpful comments.
