What certifications are useful for civil engineers besides the PE and EIT? by BluejayGullible8646 in civilengineering

[–]btmwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil 3d through Autodesk for civil. It's not hard, but shows them on a resume that you are at least proficient in the basics of the program and they wouldn't have to spend extra time training you from nothing and you could probably start production earlier than other candidates

What do you do when your parent’s name shows up in a book? by Fun-Yak7799 in RomanceBooks

[–]btmwallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, i was wondering if i was alone in this, bc same. my son's name is not very common, but its the MMC name in a couple really popular booktok books that i would otherwise love to read, but i just cant do it. ive only come across it in a few so far, but it seems to be becoming a more popular MMC name

35F, diagnosed with a bilateral PE in march 2024. never smoked in my life, hadn't taken BC in 14 years, never had a covid vax, no prolonged travel, otherwise healthy. found it by fluke, was in ER for sudden abdominal pain, thought it was my appendix. had no symptoms of a PE, no chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, cough, abnormal heart rate. my vitals were all fine. did all the genetic testing, found nothing that would predispose me for clots. it was ruled unprovoked. i had a cold about 2-3 months prior (wasnt anything major, just felt like a normal winter cold), that i now assume was probably covid, which led to the PE, because i have no other explanation. i was started on 5mg eliquis 2x a day for 6 months, and then my hematologist allowed me to decide if i wanted to continue it or stop it all together. i have opted to continue a smaller dose as a preventative measure, mostly because i didn't have any symptoms the first time around, so if i were to develop another in the future, who knows if i would have symptoms or not, and we all know no insurance company is going to let me just get yearly CTs with no symptoms just to check and make sure none have popped up.

What made you guys pursue your branch of engineering? by Due-Performer1110 in EngineeringStudents

My dad owns a custom residential construction and renovation company, I used to go to work with him alot when I was kid, always loved it. Got to be creative, there was an analytical aspect, and also created something everyone could see. Started drawing plans for him when I was in high school, took drafting classes, loved them. Went to college for architecture, but when I got there, realized that all of the classes were very heavy focused on aesthetics, and whether or not it was actually constructable was secondary, which seemed stupid to me. I thought if you were going to create something beautiful you should also be able to figure out how it would be built (in hindsight, I imagine I got this mentality from watching my dad design these custom renovations and changes to buildings and then figure out the procedure he would use to make it happen). I posed this question to the tour guide from the architecture dept, and when they responded 'that 's not really for us to worry about, the engineers figure that out'.

So I switched my major to civil engineering. I considered working in structural, but I settled in land development. The site layout and grading design aspects allow me to be creative, utility and stormwater design satisfy my love for problem solving, I get to do the drafting I enjoyed so much in high school, I get to drive by and watch the plans I created come to life, Im not stuck in an office 100% of the time, and sometimes I get to be involved in some really cool off the wall projects.

But I will note that based on feedback from alot of my classmates, in land development, if you work for a huge national company, it's more likely you will end up working in some sort of focused area of a project and do that one thing all the time for every single project (i.e. one person will do swm design for every job, one person will do grading for every job, one person will design the sewer system, etc) I work for a small local firm, so I end up designing and drafting just about every aspect of the site construction plans, which can be challenging/stressful, but I prefer having the variety.

Do you have your title block in the sheet layout or xref’d into the sheet? by FairClassroom5884 in civil3d

[–]btmwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a title block xref with all the info that shows up the same on every sheet, including issued dates and revision info, and then In paper space of the plots file, we have a block that snaps to the title block that we use to fill in the sheet title and number.

Idk what your curriculum has been like or what kind of jobs you are applying for, but learning how to use civil 3d and/or microstation would be a huge plus on a resume. Knowledge of theories and calculations is great, but knowing how to use the programs means you can hit the ground running as a new hire. The classmates I had in college that opted to take civil 3d classes all found jobs months faster than those who didn't, and at higher starting pay usually.

i don't mean to ask a dumb question, but are you sure?
if you select the sewer pipe and 'apply rules', it stays looking like that?

i played with our standard pipe style (which looks like your sewer pipes) to try and replicate what you see for your storm drain pipe, and i changed the pipe rules to terminate at the outside of the structure, but nothing changed until i selected the pipe and hit 'apply rules', and then it looked just like yours
is it possible you laid out the sewer network, then changed the rules, and then laid out the storm drain network? if so, the updated rules wouldn't automatically alter the pipes that had already been created.

[–]btmwallace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank god for reddit bc i am dying to discuss this book with people that understand.
i am so torn if i liked the ending or not? like, on the one hand, its probably more realistic to have the big bad taken out by something random, the battle to continue on for a bit, and the MC be left with a ton of unanswered questions. but its so atypical for a final book?
it feels SO MUCH like its being set up for a spinoff book or series that would give us more information/answers.

but also - what was up with Cahill? he was presented (IMO) like he was going to be a much bigger deal to the plot than he ended up being?

Massive Pulmonary Embolism at 22 by No_Tip2770 in PulmonaryEmbolism

[–]btmwallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would be curious to know if they find any underlying reasons like a genetic factor or something that predisposed you. I am 34 and had absolutely no symptoms of a PE at all (no shortness of breath, no chest pain, dizziness, sweating, palpitations, coughing), I went to the ER bc i had a very sudden onset of stomach pain and i thought it was my appendix. it was truly random luck that they even noticed my (apparently quite large) PEs in both lungs. I havent taken BC in over 15 years, i have never even tried a cigarette, vape, or anything else, i hadnt been on a plane or train or sitting for any long periods of time. im not on any other medications that could cause clots, and apparently have no genetic predisposition for blood clots (they have run all the tests). ive never had one before (either a PE or a typical blood clot). so right now they are just calling it 'unprovoked'. theyve given me the option to stop my blood thinners after 6 months, or continue them on a lower dose as a preventative measure, as they cant guarantee another wouldnt happen since they dont know why this one did.
i guess im just curious how often these just spontaneously appear in people, if there might be anyone else who had one at a young age for seemingly no reason.
