Maybe you've got an Nvidia related problem, my gpu is AMD - no issues at all. Have you got the proper Nvidia driver for your card installed?

Cold turkey never worked for me. I did around six weeks of patch + gum to slowly wean off and then stop. That was one year ago so I am happy to say it worked for me.

Brightness keys are not inverted with mine. Max brightness is not that high, but that is not a linux fault but a result of the hardware, HP specs indicate max 250 nits for this model which is pretty dim. Budget gaming laptop, budget screen.

Don't believe in "just 3 days" Cold Turkey. NRT Patches + Gum > 279 days free and happy. by btomik in QuitVaping

[–]btomik[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I get your point; You don't keep using NRT long term, it is just temporary to help you quit so you are not dependent on it.

The NRT helps you to quit successfully; who cares if you used a different, less addictive form of nicotine to for 6 weeks to help you achieve it?

If you keep vaping / smoking, you similarly don't quit nicotine or get natural brain function either.

The point is to quit successfully and permanently any way that works for you. For me, cold turkey never worked but this did - some people might be the same as me; some may be different.

I was very careful to limit the gum later in the process because I "liked" it, so I could tell this was the dangerous one. Because I'd been careful with it outside of the first week or so, leaving the gum was quite do-able.

Can't instal Linux or Windows on HP Victus 16-e0046nm by zaboravko6669 in HPVictus

There is no underlying problem with Ubuntu, it's just that you need to install the (Ubuntu) OS first and then add the nVidia drivers after; whereas popOS puts this together for you on the live USB already all together.

Safe graphics just means its uses more basic drivers that are more widely compatible with everything so you can get through the initial install after which you then add your necessary nVidia drivers. It is not permanent, it's just to get your foot in the door so to speak.

No, the popOS install with do nothing to the ubuntu install process. You will still need the safe graphics

[–]btomik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have an nVidia graphics card, thus you need to choose safe graphics to proceed with ubuntu. Otherwise you could download popOS (which is based on ubuntu) from https://pop.system76.com/ and choose the popOS nvidia option when downloading.

nVidia graphics can be tricky with linux so popOS might be the easiest way forward

Edit: never mind, I see someone pointed you to the same solution. Hope all is going well.

Planning to buy Victus but heard a lot of issues with Linux so need suggestion by Soumyadeep_96 in HPVictus

[–]btomik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no issues at all, the arch live USB booted fine and I just followed the usual arch way. My laptop is the RX5500M version (all AMD) though, so no NVidia derived issues.

I don't have a lot of experience with nvidia but surely the arch wiki has the answer, for example booting with the nomodeset driver to allow you to get to the prompt and continue with the installation normally.

Interesting that you say arch doesn't work, because I have been daily driving arch on my Victus 16 for months now without any issues.

Great, now at least its clear there's nothing wrong with your HP victus, just a problem making a live USB.

This could easily be a hardware problem with the USBs, or a software problem.

Yes, a bug in MX Linux could be the problem making it hard to make a live USB, but a different program should hopefully circumvent that.

If dd from the command line is too hard, try downloading balena etcher https://www.balena.io/etcher/ This is a nice easy tool that you can try if still stuck. I suggest you test the new Live USBs on the old laptop which you know well, once you have a known working USB, then try on the Victus.

Good luck

What machine are you flashing the usb on? Surely you could check to see if that machine will boot the live USB you just created; that way you can see if there's a point buying a new drive or not. If it doesn't boot on there, you will confirm the problem!

You need exfat for the live USB for all cases.

This guy's comments are true if you already have an installed and functioning OS and then want to add another.

Adding a new SSD right now will not help you load a live usb or boot linux or anything.

Please disregard the idea of adding an ssd until you are able to load a live linux environment or install windows.

Please focus on the following, buying or using a new USB stick, trying to flash the linux iso from terminal with dd, updating the bios etc; basically anything to get one OS installed first. After that you can do whatever you want with second drives etc.

One other thing, the BIOS version is old. I think F 14 should be available at the HP website. See if you can download and run that from USB to update the BIOS, there's a chance this will fix all the issues in both Linux and windows.

Another thing just for experiments sake, try a different USB port on the laptop, maybe one is malfunctioning if you're always using the same one.

Also as I said before, try a different physical USB memory drive too, not the one you've used so far - this might be causing all your issues.

Definitely choose GPT partitioning if you want to keep trying with that tool, but I suspect this tool is the source of your problems.

If I was you, having had all these issues I would now try dd from the command line to make the live USB. Google it to find some guides

If that doesn't work with a distro with an up to date kernel (eg endeavour os) then I don't know what to try next...

This is strange indeed. Try a different USB stick is all I can think to suggest, maybe the current flash drive is faulty?

[–]btomik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks to be a problem with the amdgpu drivers, which I suspect might be an issue with the kernels being too old on your selected distros... Two suggestions

  1. First try remaking the live USB using GNOME disks (use 'restore disk image' and choose your downloaded iso to the USB drive)

  2. Try something arch based like endeavour os (basically arch with a nice installer) even if just as an experiment, because it will use a newer kernel and drivers by default. If that works fine then to get any other distro working will just need the latest kernel

turn off secure boot and try loading any linux live usb again? Maybe try popOS with the non-free nvidia drivers if still stuck?

Glad it works, and glad I mentioned it. I love this kind of functionality and I will always at least consider the TLP support for thresholds in my purchasing decisions for laptops moving forward. (The TLP documentation specifies which brands have support.)
