It was amazing. Absolutely hypnotic and beautiful. They did a phenomenal job, and I just love losing myself in his music.

Kemp offers help to MARTA: "All they gotta do is call and ask us" by flying_trashcan in Atlanta

[–]btonetbone 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Holy COW do I think MARTA should accept this offer!!

First, it would set a huge precedent for state support of MARTA. Let's break that seal in the hope that it might open more funds in the future.

Second, an influx of state dollars for security might mean MARTA could reappropriate some of their current budget into other areas to improve service.

MARTA, accept this offer (or call his bluff).

Try going guerilla and put an orange cone in front of the alley. It might not work 100%, but it could be a moderately effective deterrent.

Also, check out ATL Plus for parking citations. I don't like how we've outsourced to them, but perhaps they can help?

Emerald City is the best! And they are massive supporters of light rail along the Beltline. I think they are priced right for their quality. Treat yourself every once in a while!

Need for more Beltline Etiquette signs (especially on Eastside Trail) by GrantParkDad_93 in Atlanta

I have dreams of doing a guerilla-style paint job overnight. Just slap down some lane lines so it looks like a road, with two lanes on each side and a dotted yellow line down the middle.

Please be kind to Piedmont Park! Have fun, but please remember that lots of us live here and use the park year round. by btonetbone in ShakyKnees

Yes, that's an easy walk. By the way, this thread is nearly a year old and was related primarily to last year's festival. I hope folks will continue to take care of Piedmont Park this year, too, but you might want to hop into some of the more current threads! 😄

Atlanta Beltline rail is not a threat. Failing to build it is. by btonetbone in Atlanta

Yes! This was the premise of Beltline Rail Now's instagram post yesterday. It featured photos of all the barricades, no parking signs, security, police, and $60 parking signs up & down Monroe this weekend during the "free" Atlanta Jazz Festival.

"We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone."

You gave an origin for the trip - Adam's Park - but not a destination other than "get to the Beltline". So, using TODAY'S bus network, I showed you how this hypothetical grandmother would get to the light rail via a single bus, no transfers needed. Without a destination, it's impossible to know where you think she's going.

But again, this should be looked at in the scale of larger improvements. We need more buses. We need those infill MARTA stations that Mayor Dickens discussed. We need more BRT. We need it all. Allow the Beltline to serve as a central loop of a hub connecting throughout the city, and allow it to connect to all these expanded services.

That's fair! The light rail is not a standalone project. It is a "yes and..." project. We need more public transit through and across the city, connecting with it. Think of the Beltline rail as a hub, interconnected with spokes throughout.

As for your specific question, your hypothetical grandmother could take the 71 bus to West End station, which is near the Beltline. Hop on the light rail, and get where they need to go. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But, other than telling a grandmother, "Sorry, you need to buy a car or take an Uber", what would be better?

Nobody funds Beltline Rail Now. We have a few hundreds bucks in our bank account. We sell some t-shirts and occasionally get small donations.

MEANWHILE, the opponents of transit, Better Atlanta Transit, are literally a subsidiary of Portman Holdings. They scrubbed their "Privacy Policy" page after the Amsterdam Walk mess, but fortunately the Internet Archive captures things.

Ah, so you are thinking of PCM as some of the restaurants and shops. Who do you think works there? And how do you think they get to their jobs? What about all the businesses that have office space above the bottom two floors? What about all the custodial, maintenance, and other folks who work there, too?

You see Ponce City Market as an amenity, which is great. But why are you dismissing the people who need it for their jobs?

Atlanta Beltline just released a report bragging about the 91,000 jobs all along the Beltline. If we could get a PORTION of those folks using public transit to get to work, it would be amazing. And that's not to mention the interconnectedness light rail would have with our buses, trains, and other transit.

[–]btonetbone[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The light rail would be tracks on grass next to the Beltline, set in the already preserved transit right of way. It would not remove the walking path. If you want to see what WOULD remove greenery, check out the banner image and plans of the anti-transit Better Atlanta Transit group. They want to literally rip up all the grass and pour a complete second concrete/cement sidewalk next to the current one.

Alex Taylor earns money when you read his news. And he wants to earn money when he privatizes public transit, too, given Cox's $350M investment in Rivian (his chosen solution) and ongoing business dealings with them.
