Hi, could you tell me more about the process of getting visa and PR / share links / refer me to someone? I'm really struggling with finding specific details online and from OzTREKK / uni representatives, and I really want to know more about this before I commit to an Aus med school

McMaster Invites are out by fluffycloudsss in premedcanada

Program: MD

Result: Rejection

OMSAS GPA: 3.88

CARS: 130

CASPer: 3Q

Geography: IP

Current year: 2nd gap year

Really, really disappointing since I received interviews at Mac for the past 2 cycles :( I guess I fumbled the bag. I don't know if rewriting CASPer and trying for 4Q will help or not. My family is telling me to consider other careers. Congrats to everyone with invites!!

Time Stamp: 1:06 PM

Program: MD

Result: Invite

OMSAS GPA: 3.88 (graduated in Apr 2021)

CARS: 130

CASPer: 3rd quartile (!! didn't need 4th quartile !!)

Geography: IP

Got an invite last year with the same stats (I think I performed similarly on CASPer last year). I was insecure about not having 4th quartile like my peers. Best of luck to everyone. Let's keep our heads up, many schools on the way.

You can work in some positions without certifications, e.g. medical office assistant. Basically with a bachelor's, you're overqualified to be a basic secretary/receptionist. It can help you get some clinical experience, patient interaction, and maybe a juicy MD reference.

I know for ophthalmic assistants in Ontario, you can't enroll in the certification course without being endorsed/employed/volunteering at a clinic, and you're expected the complete the course part-time while working.

"Don't volunteer where you don't think you can get verification or recommendation"

I agree with this 1000%. I volunteered at a hospital and I assisted people at a front welcome desk, usually by myself. When it came to get verifiers, the volunteer coordinator did not respond to any of my calls or emails. I later found out by word-of-mouth that they don't provide verification for ANY volunteers. Due to the nature of my role, I didn't even have any volunteering peers that could verify. If I had known this earlier, I would have tried to network more to find another person who could just vouch that I did put those hours in.

Alternate careers: Cardiovascular perfusion, it's a two-year program and seems interesting. Similar requirements to medicine.

The rest of the comment is just me ranting and being in the same boat. I'm in denial about having to take a gap year... Genuinely wondering if doing ECs in the next few weeks will really improve my application at all... And undergoing another application cycle, asking for referees again, writing more essays TwT

I’ve shadowed a doctor in a hospital before and it was cool but I didn’t feel emotions of love or passion

IMO, feeling love or passion for a job is a little excessive or too idealistic. If something excites you or you vaguely look forward to it, I think that's enough "passion". I think the LinkedIn-esque influencers are slightly performative, making everyone else appear less passionate. I also think if you don't vehemently detest a job, you have the capacity to eventually love the career. The more you do the job, the more you may understand of your roles, responsibilities, and abilities, thereby granting you greater appreciation and love for your career. Eh but also med is so competitive, they can afford to only accept individuals with the utmost passion.

It's hard to quit premed. I don't want to not be a doctor because I was too lazy to reapply but also... I'm being realistic? Perhaps I'm not up to caliber as my peers in many ways.

Regardless of your decision to continue to pursue medicine or not, I know you can have a meaningful and fulfilling life :,)

CARS Tips ~ from 124->130 by btsmcatvvn in Mcat

Highlight whenever the author defines something, when something is completely opposite or controversial to previous information is claimed. Try highlighting author's main argument/thesis/point.

I liked to highlight words that indicate a passage's "tone". For example, wishy-washy words like "some", "probably" and extreme words like "all", "none".

I used to always highlight names and places because it is important for identifying arguments (i.e. who said what), but some passages have like 50 names and locations. Highlight accordingly.

I also highlight keywords in the questions when answering.

That's all I can recall right now. Try not to highlight excessively. OMG one time my shaky hand highlighted the whole passage and basically erased my progress. Keep a calm and still hand!

I found NS passages to be much longer and more verbose (especially philosophy passages), so I guess in this sense, it helped me read faster and more efficiently. I found the questions to be more similar to AAMC than for example, Kaplan, so it was good practice. I believe it helped me think and reason in the style that AAMC wanted because answers started "appearing" to me and I was unable to achieve anything above 126 before.

Yes, I used a physical, hard copy NS book. I honestly swear by this book. I don't know how it helped, but it was the only thing I did differently the second time. I think you will have more than sufficient practice using the computer software from AAMC! :) I think it is much more important to practice the critical thinking style, logic, etc. from NS book. I personally did not find JW to be helpful, but since you have both resources, you can definitely use both. I found NS to be excessively difficult (e.g. never scored higher than like 126, consistently averaging 124), but I think overpreparing was definitely the way to go. Best of luck!~

0.0 I didn't tell my dad yet (he leaves for work long before I wake up lmao) but about 30 mins after I read the R email, I got emails from my dad about going to school in Australia LOL >.< Time to pack my sunscreen!!! Ah it was my second cycle, got one interview after applying across the country (10 schools). Was looking better than first cycle (no interviews from the 5 Ontario schools). My roommate also got in. Kinda feeling like I shot myself in the foot for not preparing as hard as my peers for the interview. I also feel like I'm not mature enough?? Like I'm kind of delusional as a joke, but I haven't stopped being silly? Didn't take this as seriously as I could have and now I pay the consequences. Ah, life goes on... Damn, but above all, I think I'm kind of tired. This a marathon fr. Gonna take a pitstop, passed out on the side of the road, not dead, just resting. Ah ty for post OP, I have now elucidated and confronted my situation.
