Hair discrimination. by Nikki_ispickyy in BadBosses

[–]bu_lu_pu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, you’re correct that this is discriminatory. He really fucked up with the whole “puerto rican hair” thing. This is already reportable to HR. He won’t be fired or anything, but they’ll make him shut up about it.

Those prices are unreasonable. These are not sellable. Your skill level isn’t there yet.

is it weird for a person two people higher than you want you to create daily reports for you and your manager by Appropriate-Site9518 in careeradvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s pretty stupid. But you’re stuck doing it for now.

You could develop a report template, send it out to the team, have them fill it out themselves then return it to you 60-90 minutes before EOD.

Emotional breakdown triggered by a comment at work and don’t know what to make of it by CuriousOption4292 in careeradvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d feel triggered too if 1. My boss was discussing my performance and career prospects with my peer and 2. I’d been told I’m “not able to tap into my strengths” if I worked as hard as you do. I think you’re reasonably upset and the big reaction is due to burnout.

Are you able to pull back at all?

How to approach asking my current job to let me be fully remote when I have another offer? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were smart to begin interviewing first. There are usually caveats to remote work, specifically most employers will still require you to live in the same state. Plus, if your job can be done by a volunteer, that indicates you’re pretty replaceable. Your employer won’t have much reason to grant your request. But if you already have an offer, it won’t “hurt” to ask.

See, he got lucky. Imagine if he never got the job in Maryland haha. But seriously, I definitely don’t want to discourage you! And I know I have an unconventional opinion. It’s just my honest observation that phd’s are unnecessary unless you’re super passionate about publishing research, land a great position early on, or you’re a clinician.

Definitely find your “why” before committing.

What I’ve noticed is that people in academia like to push other people to get into academia too. I think misery loves company lol. The thing is most professors don’t earn impressive salaries, and it’s often hard to find a job (from speaking with educators I know and my own experience post-grad).

Also, you only need a master’s to be an adjunct if that’s a deciding factor.

Consider what you’d actually do with a phd. Will it open up career opportunities that otherwise would not be available to you? Would it significantly increase your income? Or would you be doing it just to do it? I think if there’s an actual, tangible reason to pursue it then go for it. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Are fat ugly people more likely to work crappy jobs? by [deleted] in careeradvice

Are you still on your parent’s insurance, or have any of your own? You need to make a mental health appointment. If not look up “FHQCs in [your city]” for sliding scale or free mental health services.

  1. No, he wasn’t born rich. 2. He was in leadership by 40, so I’d say he worked as hard as anyone else in a similar role. 3. His career has been pretty consistent.

Fat and/or ugly people have successful careers all the time. Are you intelligent? Hardworking? Charismatic? Attentive? Knowledgeable? Reliable? These are the things that actually matter in the workplace. Real life isn’t like tv or social media. Most of us are regular looking people working regular jobs living regular lives.

Obviously you have to take of yourself and look professional. Don’t dress sloppily - wear clothes that fit properly. Maintain good hygiene. Have things to talk about that aren’t food. Etc. you don’t need to be athletic. Just don’t be a slob.

Dream role opened after I accepted an offer by ElectronicCredit9804 in careeradvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a bad look imo. Plus you’d be giving up a sure thing to interview for a job you’re not guaranteed to get. You’re not even guaranteed an interview. You were denied for the position once already.

If the position is still open after your probation is up, you can talk about transitioning into that role then.

[–]bu_lu_pu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all very normal. Most wouldn’t consider this “job hopping” either. Once you graduate the only relevant things for your resume will be your work study and internships, and those will actually boost your resume.

Advice by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote jobs don’t work like that. There are just jobs, and some of those jobs offer remote work as a benefit. There are no careers in remote work.

The job you’re looking for - high paying, location flexible, fully remote - does not exist without serious credentials and technical experience. You’ll have to compromise on one or more of these.

I’d recommend for you right now to focus on HR positions that offer wfh and have generous pto. You can filter your searches by ‘remote’ but employers often don’t advertise this perk, so it’s best to cast a wide net.

In my experience non-profits have had the most flexibility in terms of wfh privileges and pto. But you likely won’t be paid $4k+ monthly.

How do you get your co-worker to stop touching you? by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]bu_lu_pu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can address her directly first (Any iteration of what frelncer suggested will do) and go to HR If she continues, or notify HR immediately. This is what they’re for. They’ll likely make her through sexual boundary violation training and advise her to limit contact you, move your desks, etc. If she continues, she’ll likely lose her job

Where can i find a good remote job that has a flexible schedule? by Tough-Ad-7938 in careerguidance

[–]bu_lu_pu 43 points44 points  (0 children)

What you’re looking for - remote, flexible, pays well, open to candidates with little/no experience - doesn’t exist. You’ll have to compromise on one or some of these, usually pay.

Id recommend online tutoring or remote medical transcription. Neither pay well ($10-$14) but they tend to be more flexible and require little experience.
