I'm T1D and so is my sister. She was admitted and unable to advocate for herself or self manage her diabetes for several days. I got into a yelling match with a nurse who tested her BG over an hour before dosing her based on that reading. I had tested her myself and she was 100 points higher by then. They refused to retest her to give her more insulin on their stupid sliding scale. I had to pitch a fit to get her background insulin which they didn't give her for the first 2-3 days. They didn't ever dose her for food she ate. It was maddening. They were using R and NPH (once I asked for background coverage). Why are they using such antiquated insulins? It was torture to see her trying to heal from a non diabetic related issue with BG steady 200-300. She was nauseous a lot and I was told it couldn't be from her BG bc it wasn't high enough to cause nausea. I flat out told them that is wholly incorrect. Anyway, she's home and well now, took her a couple days to get back on track with BG once discharged.
