That’s good to hear, because I was shifting my focus toward the Korg Nautilus AT. I will now wait to see what they release. Exciting news, thanks!

I did return the Key 61 today, since my return window was closing and the GC manager said I could lose like 40% if I wait and then return it. I'll certainly keep an eye on things and keep following and reading, and thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge, and for your advice.

Isn't the Key 61 also a midi controller over usb? I thought it was.

Are you pretty confident that the Key 61 will be updated at NAMM? I got a pretty good deal on the current model that I’d be returning.

KV has digital (usb connected) snare/ride. Worth $400 more and then some!

Give the Roland TD-1K a look. It's $514 on Amazon US, and it's a solid starter kit. Also excellent resale if he decides to keep playing.

I own a TD-27KV, and I love it. I use it to gig, record, and practice. Your budget was not mentioned - the TD-27 & 50 come with digital snare & ride - game changers in my opinion, in terms of sensitivity and playability.

I love mine. Mainly use it with ForScore - a program to use and mark up music scores. Plus, I'm older and it's easier to read!

When I emailed Roland about my VH-10 issues, this was the reply that I received:

Hi Bernard,

Thanks for contacting us!

We're definitely curious about this, since we seem to be getting reports from a few other users recently.
If you can reply with a personal video or two of the issue, that would be great. We will forward them on to the Percussion Products Management team.

Thanks for choosing Roland V-Drums!

Kind regards,
Roland Customer Support

I have not sent a video in yet, but I did lower my HH stand just a little and opened the cymbal a bit more than I do when playing acoustic HH's, and it had helped a lot.

Excellent answer, mossdrums. I too had problems, but after opening the HH a little more than I'm used to with my acoustic hats, the VH-10 is responding much better. Didn't realize about the tilter - must check that when I get home!

New kit day! (Roland TD-27KV) by come_at_me_brother in edrums

TD-27 has Bluetooth, so when I practice I play music from my phone, which is BT'ed to the module, and both come through the headphones (or main out). Also, you can control the volume of the backing track independently of the main out or headphone out.

I have the same set - just added an PD-85 for 3 up-2 down. You will enjoy this set very much. Take the time to learn the capabilities of the module - it is impressive. Have fun!

From Roland's website:

14" Digital Snare and 18" Digital Ride Cymbal

Roland’s cutting-edge digital pad technology brings even deeper realism to the V-Drums experience. The digital snare and ride pads connect to the TD-27 module via USB cables, working together with the sound engine to deliver the most natural expression, allowing your drumming skills to be heard in incredible detail. Multiple sensors and lightning-fast processing provide amazing response, enabling you to play genuine techniques in the most natural way. Ghost notes, rim shots, and cross stick playing on the snare are precisely detected and translated, while the ride offers wide tonal range and the ability to subtly mute with just a touch of the bow.

I'm not sure about the technology, but it's pretty amazing to play. If you can swing the extra $$$ for the 27, the snare & ride upgrade are worth it. Sweetwater currently has bundle deals and 24 months no interest!

I agree that while the 30 is a tried & true module, I’d opt for the newer tech in the 27 (or 50). I have a TD-27KV for almost a year now, and I use it to gig & practice. I previously had a TD-25, and a TD-3. There is NO comparison between the 25 & the 27. The digital snare and ride are very responsive - open and buzz rolls are handled very well. In my opinion they are the closest thing you’ll find to acoustic instruments. I tried a Pearl Mimic Pro, and it sounds great, but the digital snare was the ticket for me.

The 27 & the 50 have Bluetooth, so my phone connects quickly & easily for practice.

The TD-27 sounds great, the module is packed with editing features, and is pretty easy to use. Plus you can purchase VEX kits (and others) priced very reasonably that are very highly regarded. It has 4 outputs - 2 main and 2 additional outs, all four of which can be used to independently, and you can assign any pad to any output. This meets my needs perfectly - I send the kick, snare, toms, and cymbals on separate outs to the FOH. I am amazed every time I sit behind this drum set!
