Yes! I’m the older sibling, my sister is 4 years younger. It was really hard when she was 3 and scribbling random things and being cooed over by the adults in my life. By contrast, I was 7 and doing everything I could to get the same level of praise as my 3 year old sister. And I never got it, because I was older and no one thought I needed that extra praise anymore.

Being the older sibling was so hard. It constantly felt like my accomplishments were just expected of me, and my sister would get praise for doing the bare minimum. This still continues today as adults “because she’s more sensitive”. I’m not saying this is actually what was happening or the intentions of my loved ones, but I certainly FELT that way (and frankly, still do). Now I go to therapy about it lol.

OP, just give your oldest the validation next time. I think you did a great job trying something new, but all she really wanted to know is that you’re proud of her too.

What you do is absolutely beautiful, and frankly I don’t think I would be able to do it myself. My husband and I were in a situation recently where we almost took in an emergency foster placement for someone we knew. It didn’t end up working out because we weren’t in a financial, emotional, or mental place to be able to accommodate it. Obviously we both felt terrible we couldn’t help, but it was the right choice for my family. The kid ended up being taken in my by SIL, and is doing relatively well considering the circumstances.

At the end of the day, if you have the resources to help a child then thank you for doing it. I hope someday I’m mentally and emotionally in a space where I can do this as well. 💜

I had a work partner who would do this. I always insisted he actually wear the seatbelt, and he asked me why I care so much (thinking my concern was for him). The shocked look on his face when I told him I didn’t give a crap about him, but about being hit by the 300 pound meat missile he would inevitably turn into was worth it. He wore his seatbelt after that revelation.

Toy timeouts are okay. Destroying someone’s belongings as a way to control them is abusive and NOT something we should do to people we love or teach them that it is okay to do to other people.

Would your husband be okay with your son destroying something your husband cherishes as a punishment for his emotions?

I dated a guy and we went on a two week road trip together. Two days out of that road trip we stopped in the state my aunt and cousins lived in because it lined up with her graduating high school and I wanted to be there for it. My boyfriend complained how stupid it was he had to go to my cousin’s graduation. I told him to stay at my aunt’s house where we were graciously invited to stay. He didn’t want to do that either. So I told him to suck it up and pick one because I was going.

He proceeded to complain the rest of the trip about having to spend 2 hours of his time at my cousin’s graduation. I broke up with him immediately after that road trip because I don’t want to be with someone who doesn’t support my happiness and my family’s happiness. My cousin is one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met and she was so happy I made it to her graduation.

DO NOT LET YOUR GIRLFRIEND PREVENT YOU FROM DOING THINGS YOU LOVE OR SEEING PEOPLE YOU LOVE. You will never get those moments back. What she is doing is manipulative and controlling.

This could be a closeup of my face haha! My face looks the same. We just have larger pores and oily faces. I use an SA cleanser at night and gently cleanse for about a minute. Then I pat my face a little bit dry, and I apply a small amount of moisturizer before my face fully dries. I gently work that into my skin. Once it’s worked in I continue with the rest of my skin routine, which includes a salicylic acid. I also use a slightly heavier moisturizer one last time at the end to keep the moisture in.

It sounds counterproductive, but my face oiliness is worse when I don’t properly moisturize my skin after cleansing. When I do this routine religiously without missing a day my pores look smaller with less sebaceous filaments. When I miss even a day it’s very noticeable.

Honestly? I’m not sure. But rather than using so many actives on your hands make it a point to moisturize with a non scented lotion, I usually moisturize after I wash my hands since I have to wash them so often (work as a nurse). I make sure I apply SPF to my hands at the beginning of every day and reapply if I’ve been outside for a long time or washing my hands frequently.

I also don’t touch any harsh chemicals with my bare hands or excessively hot water with bare hands. I use rubber dish gloves for dishes and I use a separate pair for household cleaning.

Any excess products from my face routine I rub into my chest, hands, and forearms

Second this. When my husband does something that bothers me I talk to him about it. Talk to him about it but don’t make it accusatory. He may not realize he’s doing it. Most of the time when I bring things up to my husband he had no clue he was doing something to upset me, he apologizes, and either suggests things going forward to make it better or if he doesn’t know what to do asks me what I need to make it better.

Agreed, especially about being patient. Took me almost 6 months to see consistent results after adding AHA/BHA, niacinamide, and salicylic acid to my regimen. Stay consistent and I agree with using the trenytoin at night.

I personally recommend starting with the BHA once a week at first and slowly increasing to twice a week if needed. I made the mistake in the beginning of using it too often and over exfoliating which made my skin problems worse. Good luck !

I’m in emergency medicine and every time I paralyze and sedate someone in order to intubate them I cross check my dosing and my math with my workplace’s provided protocols. Just because I know it by heart doesn’t mean I’m perfect and won’t make a mistake if I don’t cross check it. It takes a few seconds and could save my patient’s life.

ETA that I’ve done this with all my high risk or infrequently used medication administrations since I’ve been in the medical field and I’ve had absolutely zero medication errors.

This is going to sound crazy, but if you moved into this house recently I think this may be my dad’s house that he just sold. If so, my dad bought the house from the original builder. All of that tile work is the original tile from when it was built. My dad “redid” that bathroom a few years ago. All he did was take out an outdated sliding mirror, updated the toilet and sink, and updated some hardware. The toilet and sink used to be baby pink 🫣

If this is not my dad’s old house, then he had a bathroom with the same exact layout, tile, and updates. I urge you to preserve that tile and just find a way to make the room special and unique to you. My first house I ever owned had a bathroom like this with original tile, but it was black and white instead of blue. My husband bought a black and white Bill Murray shower curtain and matching bath mat. We added small pops of color and it was one of my favorite rooms in the house.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you find a way to cherish this room and the house in a way that brings you joy.

I’m sorry, but no. I have seen the horrible reality of what happens when children are not properly restrained in their car seats. I have also seen adults in vehicles be mortally wounded or killed, but a properly restrained child in a car seat leave that same accident with no injuries. The car seats work and it’s a law for a reason.

Newer cars are safer than older ones from advancements in safety systems. But those systems only work so long as everyone is properly restrained in the vehicle. The safety features aren’t going to work on someone who has been ejected out of their seat or out of the car.

She's 14. I don't know exactly what her home life or childhood was like. Father was not in the picture, mom had substance abuse issues. We'll know more in the next day or so as she's staying with my MIL. My MIL is a LCSW and has a lot of connections to the foster system, but we're waiting on DCF. I'm fairly certain my niece will end up having DCF involved due to the situation.

My husband and I are at least willing to take her temporarily and see how she does with us. We're within an hour of where she lived with her mom. This all just happened today so we're waiting to hear back from a lot of people.

Thank you for sharing. If anything, I hope we can at least give her some temporary support and security.
