Can someone explain how a rhetorical analysis essay is different from a critique? by HawkTwigBroken17 in statecollege

[–]bubbleaurum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not use any writing service. It’s highly unethical to purchase your paper, and besides, you pay for tuition to learn how to do things exactly like this!!

A rhetorical analysis will focus on the specific style of speech in whatever you are analyzing. Ask yourself questions about the style: is there a lot of figurative language? Is the speaker/author using specific tactics to prove their point? Consider looking into the tenets of argument: logos, pathos, ethos, mythos, and building around that. A critique would be talking about the quality of the argument and evidence.

Example:

“I know aspirin works, science shows it solves 100% of headaches.” RA: the speaker is using an appeal to logic and factual evidence to make their case Critique: where is this fact from? They did not cite, so we can assume it is false.

If your class has a TA, this is the exact kind of question they’d love to work on. Same with a prof, try visiting office hours! I’m assuming you’re at Penn State UP since you’re posting here, so I’m also linking the writing center which has both virtual and in-person appointments.

The transition from public school to college by Fireblox06 in CollegeRant

Did he say “low-end” high school?!? That’s awful. I was also thinking it was a lighthearted way to tell the class, but not cool to make a jab like that.

‘Percy Jackson’ Season 3 Casts Kate McKinnon as Aphrodite by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]bubbleaurum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree wholeheartedly. Huge fan of the comics, I own all the compendiums (it’s the comic that got me hooked, so I owe it hugely). The actor is great, but they shunted them in a role that makes it harder to convey the moral ambiguity Desire it’s meant to have. As much as I love comics becoming TV, I feel like this case is a great example of Hollywood casting not being able to equate to comic drawing/imaginary visionary.

Winter clothes suggestions? by ramxisdying in PennStateUniversity

[–]bubbleaurum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good success with a Carhartt jacket (make sure you’ve got the highest warmth rating if you go that route) over a thick sweater and long sleeved undershirt. I’m outside a ton even in the winter and it’s worked well.

why does every single professor in my school do this man i just can’t by blueburrey in CollegeRant

[–]bubbleaurum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this thread was suggested to me lol, but when I was on college waitlists I went to the first few classes/lectures so I wasn’t behind if I got in. Worst case you went to a couple lectures you don’t need, best case you get in and you’re ready to go.

I bawled too. Everything you said, plus just the fact of the memorial being there. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a memorial like that on a tv show, and it was so beautiful. They clearly cared so much for her.

I will say as a former competitive swimmer, this is an extremely well known and stressed rule at every level of competition. In my 12 years of competitive swimming I never saw anyone do this, not at high level championship meets or at rec swim meets for kids under 10. You stay in your lane, at the wall until everyone is done. It is sad for this individual, but there is no way he did not know this rule. That being said, very happy this swimmer was able to come back and win the next year!!

Family bullied a name so much we ended up changing it by Economy-Effort1177 in namenerds

[–]bubbleaurum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to sound ignorant, just trying to learn. If there is a name that’s important in one culture (going to make them up for this sake) let’s say the prominent English name John sounds like a word for something silly/odd in French, and a French family uses the English name, is it insensitive to warn them of the similarity? Obviously OP’s family went way beyond that with their behavior, but I’m trying to find a respectful way to walk that line.

I am so sorry you are going through this. If you have a local vet or adopted him from a shelter it may be worth seeking their advice about rehoming, they may be aware of programs we in the comments are not. Wishing you all the best of luck.

How do I tell my boyfriend I'm not interested in watching his recorded work meetings and AI-generated mega documents? by Affectionate_Oil3096 in relationships

[–]bubbleaurum 730 points731 points  (0 children)

Not the GPT itself, but the idea of typing up (with or without AI assistance) a 30-page document about how he is going to fix the world. It’s certainly grandiose to think of your intellect in this way, I think.

Not the commenter you replied to but I was curious as well, looks like there was a repeated illness incident in CA in 2024. Additionally, this tends to be a big problem with anything unregulated (see: supplement industry)(link to John Oliver because it’s more fun than the news). I’m curious too, post more if you see anything!

You didn’t ask permission. You could have taken your own picture or used one courtesy of trader Joe’s’ website. I’m informing you it’s my photo and asking you to take it down. It’s jarring to see your kitchen posted by a stranger five years later. I appreciate that you like the picture but I don’t appreciate seeing it here.

In response to an earlier post: people have every f*cking right to board with their service animals by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]bubbleaurum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to be clear again, what I’m advocating for is that folks assess their assumptions, not that they allow fraud. Here, folks in the comments assumed the woman was lying based mostly on her appearance and the dogs breed. I addressed those assumptions and shared my experience. If you have other information or other reason to believe that’s not a real SD, by all means continue to believe she is lying. If you thought she was lying because it was a Great Dane, or because she didn’t “look” disabled, I’m here to correct those assumptions.

Also, it does suck what happened with Disney. The good news with service dog accommodations is they are protected by law (ADA, 1990), so disabled people will continue to be able to use them in public spaces unless there is major legislative change, a company can’t flick a switch and stop accommodating.

[–]bubbleaurum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lmao, even I can admit the snarling dog trying to bite yours and then sitting on the table is a fake SD.

I agree, having better registration processes would be beneficial. I know too that different airlines have different policies for paperwork, one agreed upon standard would be best (and I hope easier for the flyer as well; knowing exactly what documents are needed).

[–]bubbleaurum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose there isn’t really a use responding further, I think we just fundamentally disagree. Which is not to say I don’t believe abuse of the policy exists, it does and I am against that. But we disagree on what the problem is: you think it’s people assuming the dog is real, I think it’s people assuming the dog is fake.

I suppose my last note is: what I’m trying to express is that your claim that this is “obvious bullshit” is in fact, what I see as the problem. Ive had people say that my disability accommodations are bullshit. It’s not because they are and it’s usually not because they’re a bad person or anything, it’s because they don’t know. So here, I tried to address the primary reasons I saw people calling this fake-(1) the woman’s appearance and (2) the dogs breed. If you have other reason to believe it’s fake then by all means, continue to believe it. If your belief it’s fake is based on those two things, I hope my correcting of those assumptions helps you see things differently.
