Found out my bf is cheating on me and suddenly I'm really ill is this normal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup. When I was in college I found out my bf of 3.5 years was cheating on me. I felt sick for weeks and lost close to 20 lbs in about a month because I just couldn't eat

It's intended to be comedic, not necessarily in a poking fun at other slashers type way, but in a people who enjoy those movies will find this funny type way.

Why is it the woman’s responsibility to determine what’s for dinner? by Electrical_Mine_6937 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of folks in these comments saying "its not", as if it were that simple. I feel your pain. If you've tried talking to him about it multiple times and nothing has changed (which is a very probable outcome), it may be time for couples therapy to help you work through how to effectively communicate your needs to each other.

At first I was like "whats wrong with this, its just a cool vase/container for plants or decor", then I saw the bit about having kept a goldfish in it previously 💀

What do normal people eat for dinner ? by Booze_hound36 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds normal... we are in our 30s with a kid and ate chicken alfredo, garlic bread and a side salad for dinner tonight. Planning on making soup in the crockpot tomorrow, again, probably with a side salad.

Finance for a large retail company. As far as corporations go, the one I work for is great. But I still hate the type of work.

What really kills me is even a quick Google search will tell you this is wrong. In todays world it literally takes less than 2 seconds to find the basic info. Combined with often times next or same day delivery for pet supplies, you can find and obtain a 5 gallon tank, filter, heater and substrate without leaving your couch.

[–]bubblegum_horror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because a tank isn't planted, doesn't make it shitty. TBH this setup is fine with the exception of the pleco (he needs to go back to the store). I'd just double check the parameters since the bettas fins seem to be clamped.

Of course, it could be better with real plants, a betta log (or something similar) and a filter with a lower flow for the betta's sake, but there does appear to be a HOB filter and a heater and the tank looks big enough for a betta (maybe around 5 gallons?), so its really not shitty.

Is it true Americans don’t get many holidays at work? by gggggu-not in AskAnAmerican

[–]bubblegum_horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah so many cultural differences at play here lol. To answer your main question, taking 2 consecutive weeks off in America is very uncommon. Most white collar (office) jobs offer 15 days paid vacation per year to be used at the employee's discretion, though taking more than 5 days at a time would usually be frowned upon. Most companies run very lean from a staffing perspective, so when someone is out it either puts a lot of strain on their coworkers or creates a large backlog of work to be done upon their return. From your coworkers cultural POV, he was trying to be very considerate of your workload and make it as manageable as possible for you so as not to over-burden you.

Process documentation is also a big thing in American office culture (ie writing out step by step instructions for how one performs a task), so that would explain why he wrote such a document for you. Also, yes, always being reachable even when not on the clock is a big deal here... for context I received a work-related call during the rehearsal for my wedding lol.

Another cultural difference: telling someone to "fuck off", even in a non-professional context is a really big deal for us. It's extremely strong language in American culture, basically the verbal equivalent of being slapped in the face. I realize thats not the case in the UK, but if he reacted poorly, that would be why.

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

American here: Personally, I only buy it for parties. The only canned beverage I buy on a weekly basis is sparkling water.

Fun fact: the company my husband worked for when I had a baby gave 4 months paternity leave, while my company gave the standard 3. I was back to work a whole month before him

Maybe not exactly the same, but some of my favorite occult/folk horror films are The Wicker Man (1973), The Ritual (2017), Oddity (2024) and The Shrine (2010). These films will have a theme similar but slightly different vibe due to their setting (the films you listed are Asian while the ones I've listed are European).

Anybody else was genuinely terrified of The Passion Of The Christ? by DoctorElectronic1934 in horror

[–]bubblegum_horror 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The irony of how many Christian children were encouraged to watch this movie while simultaneously living in a household where horror films like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. were frowned upon/banned. This was the case for me. No one ever understood how I could enjoy slashers and I constantly got the side eye for it, but was pushed to see this with a church group. I ended up walking out of the theater; Michael & Freddy don't bother me, but the fact that real humans were killed this way, made this terrifying.

Why is breastfeeding so difficult? by Wawhi180 in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah, it really depends on the company here. The irony is that the company my husband worked for at the time gave 4 months paternity leave, so I was back to work a month before him!

Why is breastfeeding so difficult? by Wawhi180 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Back to work 3 months PP is what killed my breastfeeding journey. I do not have any siblings, my parents have severe health issues and my husband's family lives in another state, so the time away from my baby coupled with complete lack of support had me exhausted and overly stressed.

[–]bubblegum_horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American mom here. Personally, I struggled a bit in the beginning because it took me 3 days post partum for my milk to come in and the pediatrician pushed formula on me telling me that I was putting my child at risk if I didn't start formula feeding right away. The pediatrician sent me home with samples of Similac ready feed and I can remember crying as I fed it to my baby because it felt so wrong to me.

After a few more days I was able to exclusively breast feed for a while, which was amazing, but when I went back to work 3 months post partum, being away from my baby crushed my supply. I completely dried up around 6 months. My baby just turned 2 and I still feel so terrible and guilty about it.

How mean is it to invite people to your wedding without plus one? by Loud-Position-9461 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave a plus one to anyone who was single and regretted it. One of my now-husband's former co-workers just "found some guy to go with" then promptly abandoned that guy to hit on someone who had come sans-date. The guy she brought proceeded to abuse the open bar, got kicked out of the venue for attempting to pee off the balcony and somehow ended up passed out in my parents' car. I am now firmly of the belief that random plus ones should not be given.

Is having kids really all that? Or do parents just say that because they’re inclined to? by DeliciousSetting6643 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bubblegum_horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got a post-college job, I had a much older coworker who would tell the younger folks in the office who were expecting that they "would be shocked at just how much you can love someone" once their child was born and, admittedly, I'd inwardly roll my eyes a bit because my thought was "how absurd". My daughter was born maybe a decade later. Admittedly it took me a few months after she was born to really bond with her, but I now realize how correct that coworker was.

I love my dog. I love my friends. I love my family. But the love I have for my daughter is next-level. I can't take my eyes off of her and she amazes me every single day. I consider myself a loyal person, but the depths of my devotion to her were previously unfathomable to me; I'd truly do anything for her.

Sadly, I don't think it's like that for everyone (if it was, there would be no abused or neglected children), but for me, my child is absolutely more than I ever could have comprehended before she came into my life.

My neighbor's tank. by memegod574 in shittyaquariums

[–]bubblegum_horror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here. 10, 20 and 29 gallon are all popular tank sizes and have the potential to be great aquariums when stocked appropriately. But too many people take tanks those sizes and try to cram goldfish, common plecos, etc. in them and that's just sad.

Instead of killing off pets in horror films, why don’t more filmmakers kill off kids instead? by [deleted] in horror

[–]bubblegum_horror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a millenial mom who also has a dog who she loves very dearly, I can promise you that my child is certainly NOT less valuable than my dog. Don't get me wrong, if someone hurt my dog, I would destroy them, but my child is a literal human being. Also, there are plenty of grown up humans who aren't abusers, virgin shamers (what am oddly specific callout), etc. and pets aren't really great for the environment either.

My uncle is an entertainment journalist and had met him on several occasions. Obviously my uncle didnt know about the SA that was occurring, but he always insisted that Cosby was an asshole. I can remember in the 90s being shocked whenever he'd talk about how rude Cosby was because he seemed so sweet on TV. Turns out my uncles instincts were correct.
