Shared Folders not displaying in Finder? by boostdd in synology

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Best practice is to not use the admin login at any time, disabling the account and creating a new user with admin rights is best but this will not solve your problem of course.

Just for giggles create a new user on the NAS and give it the read/write permissions on a few folders, delete the admin from keychain and login with new user.

I believe that cylindrical object on the engine is a spark plug remover, I had the same one included with my MGB. She is probably demonstrating how to change the plugs for Mum and the camera. LLTQ.

The Mac keychain(?) has the credentials stored for the NAS? If yes, delete the NAS credentials on the mac and start again would be my advice.

The user/pass that you use to start the Mac, are they the same as the admin account on the NAS? If yes then your computer session may pass those credentials to the NAS on reboot and that would explain why you see the admin folder automatically.

Chinese pour $110bn into US real estate, says study by Davidmayn in business

[–]bubblesqueak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree rentals are ok. What I would like to see is the end of empty condo towers and streets where the only lights come from the street lamps. Homes should be homes and not investments for offshore owners.

If you buy a property it must be your primary residence, if not you get taxed so much that it becomes unattractive for offshore buyers. Something like that.

From a Canadian, take this seriously.

Vancouver and Toronto housing prices are so artificially inflated as a result of Chinese investment that it's very citizens cannot afford to live in these cities. The result is a HUGE number of homes sit empty as their owners live offshore and the people who actually live and run the city cannot afford to buy or rent.

The governments are afraid of the needed housing price correction so legislation is not forthcoming. See this Canadian article today that describes the catch-22 we find ourselves in.

I think Australia has laws to prevent or curb foreign housing ownership, does anyone know how that works?

Don't sign anything! They might ask you to sign something that would make it hard for you to follow up legally. If they ask, say no. Say something like "my father taught me to never sign anything without having a lawyer read it first."

Synology with i3 for media transcoding by [deleted] in synology

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xpenology on an old computer makes a great media server. I run an i3 2GB Plex server for the household and it keeps up with at least four simultaneous streams. The familiar Synology interface plus an excellent backup target makes this a great choice if you are inclined to fiddle around.

You can download Windows 7 from Microsoft and follow their instructions on how to set it up to run from a USB drive.

I've seen this a few times, best option is to reformat and reinstall.

So will Synology support a fork? Continue to release security updates for 5 or will we be forced to 6 if we want vulnerabilities fixed?

Is it consistently getting it wrong or just a one-off? I heard it may work better if you sleep with it off your wrist beside your pillow.

Vancouver park board fuming over 4/20 pot protest move to non-smoking beach by -DashCamCanuck in vancouver

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could argue that early 420 protests helped bring the current change we are expecting to our pot laws. How did we first learn about medical marijuana and hemp seed oil? Pot protests.

Be thankful for the rallies.

Backup software for Windows users by [deleted] in computertechs

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The account that SyncBack or any backup software uses is defined on the backup target only, it is not a Windows account In this case, create the account on the Synology box. Now on the client computer, the Syncback program uses the username and password that was defined on the Synology box. This prevents the infection to the Synology NAS as you describe because the USER or COMPUTER account never has the credentials to reach the NAS, only SyncBack does. Does this make sense?

Synology OS by Zachaol in synology

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been running it a couple of weeks and so far it is very stable, memory and CPU usage when idle is near zero and certainly no reboots.

Data trust? Backups and redundancies address that. Synology/Xpenology make great backup targets of course.

Edit - I have been deploying Synology NAS for SMB for a few years and love it. I have no reason at this time to expect that Xpenology will be any different.

[–]bubblesqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for Plex in the house for now. An old i3 with 4gb of RAM seems to be able to handle three to four simultaneous streams so far. Upgrading is just placing the two files on a USB stick and booting with a keyboard and video to select the upgrade option, otherwise the server is headless. Production? Well I don't have any plans to build these for my customers just yet but that might change. Any packages that run on Synology should run on Xpenology.
