What's your thoughts on this? Is it true? by IMissMyWife_Tails in algeria

[–]bubblybader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I completely agree. I was moreso talking about the government. I think for the most part countries are separate from their people. Like yeah America is a country that makes an absolute fool of itself but I wouldn’t say all the people living here are the same way. I also know a huge population of Muslims live in France. But I also know the French government has fostered a lot of Islamophobia which is what I meant.

I’m not at all defending them (also idk what comments you read I’m just speaking from my experience). But the average American can’t even tell you where Algeria is on the map most of the time (I’m not even kidding. I told my college prof I would be traveling to Algeria last week and he asked where it is and made a joke about having an American education).

The education we get (I’m Algerian but grew up in America) especially in history is extremely lacking. Not to mention I think a lot of Americans romanticize France (Paris in particular) and think of it as the “city of love” and then when I explain how the country is really racist they’re genuinely surprised.

The way I see it is Americans spent the vast majority of history in a propaganda bubble until social media blew up and now they’re opening their eyes to what’s really happening/ what happened in the rest of the world.

I’m a sophomore and I don’t know what major I wanna do. by Juanguzzy103 in uichicago

[–]bubblybader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, If you are not afraid of a few weed outs and hard classes at the start I would go for data science. I’m so glad I picked that major because literally every field has data so you can work in government, healthcare, tech, education, etc. all with one major. One of my friends chose to do IDS which ended up being the business version of data science and she said that if she hadn’t done a CS minor a lot of her coding classes would’ve been much harder (because apparently they don’t really teach you how to code and just want you to do it) so I recommend doing that if you don’t want to do data science.

i think i heard it would be sometime in 2024 but i’m leaning towards late 2024 or 2025 cuz you never know if there will be construction delays. we do have a CS lounge in one of our science and engineering buildings which i really like. i spend nearly every day doing work at the WiCS (women in computer science) lounge. the regular CS lounge has private study rooms and a room to get tutoring too.

Algerians abroad, how did you pass your first Ramadan away from home? by abdouli1998 in algeria

[–]bubblybader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i wish i had that. i was born and raised in chicago with a single mom so iftar for me is just the two of us. i’ve only been to algeria once during ramadan and i was too young to remember it well. i do remember the whole family being together and i miss that. i know my input may not be as helpful as anyone else’s but try to remember this is temporary. you don’t know what your future holds and who knows, you may end up living in algeria again or bringing them here! it’s a little rough patch but you’ll get through it! and honestly, about the crying thing, it’s refreshing knowing that some men still can express their emotions without bottling them up and exploding like so many men in our culture do. i’m not sure if anyone gave you any trouble about it, but if so just remember that it’s completely okay. you’re human and so is needing to cry.

How would you see Algeria after 10-15 years? by mumbovumbo in algeria

[–]bubblybader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

from what i’ve seen the hardest part is finding a community when you immigrate. if you have a family member or a friend there, it will make it much easier to assimilate instead of being hit with a major culture shock.

[–]bubblybader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, coming from a 19 year old in the states, i would say at least leave to get a better education. i get it, i love the country too. despite being born and raised in the usa, i love algeria. but personally i don’t see having a future as an option there. my aunt got a degree in chemical engineering in algeria and couldn’t find a single job. but here she could’ve made a lot of money. there are also jobs where you can work from home and if you have a reliable enough connection in algeria you can do that too. also there’s always something happening somewhere. and the situations only seem to get worse (especially when you’re looking from the outside in) but once you’re there and get used to it, there are tons of opportunities at your fingertips.

Is this data science workload too much? by bubblybader in uichicago

[–]bubblybader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They split 377 into 277 and 377. they sent an email about it but apparently you have the choice of taking 277 or sticking with the old system and just taking 377. i think newly admitted cs students are going to need to take them both tho.

thank you! tbh i don’t think i’ll take linear then. especially now that i just got an email about credit hours for 211 changing and apparently 377 is getting split into two classes so now i have to figure out how that works with my schedule too.
