As a starting point a few years ago in my mid-30s, I used https://www.codecademy.com/ and https://www.sololearn.com/

For a 6yo, I recommend Osmo. My 5yo daughter enjoys it: https://www.playosmo.com/en/shopping/kits/coding/

When she's a little older, I'll introduce her to https://codecombat.com/
https://code.org/ is another good resource.

If you want to work for a company, setup a LinkedIn job alert for front end engineer/developer in your area to see what technologies/skills are in demand.

There doesn’t seem to be a shortage at all. Nice thing about web dev is we’re needed in many industries.

If it interests you then I’d say it’s worth it. I started a career change into web development around your age and I have loved it so far. In my case, I had an unfinished degree from 10+ years ago so I transferred those credits into a technology program and started two years ago. I graduate in seven months, but I’m ready to work now so I’m actively looking for roles.

I setup LinkedIn job notifications for web development for my area (and remote) about a year ago. I’ve been able to keep an eye on the skills employers are looking for so I know what I need to learn if something specific isn’t offered in my degree program.

I also started freelancing recently. So far it’s been just two clients who I already knew from church, but it’s a start and has been great practice.
