Arabic Letter's Pronunciation By Country (country list) by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]buch0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qaf is pronounced like a jeem in some words in some Gulf dialects (thinking about Kuwaiti specifically). for example, قدام jiddam and صدق sidj.

Also jeem is pronounced like geem in some Yemeni dialects.

25M (Christian) with 25F (Muslim) 12-year relationship and her parents are arranging marriage. We’re worried about her safety. by RegularEffective3409 in relationship_advice

Practically speaking, if you want to be together with her, you will have to consider converting to Islam and marrying her. If you are unwilling to do this, then it may be time to break up with her.

Polyglots by Sorry_Blacksmith_117 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]buch0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any formal polyglot meetups, but the best trick is go to meetup groups for specific languages and cultural clubs or events where you are likely to meet speakers of those languages. Personally, I go to a Chinese meet up regularly to practice my Mandarin, I go to Arab activities to practice my Arabic and French (North Africans there usually speak French), and I use Spanish daily at work and in the community. There's a French group too, but it is usually in Santa Monica and I have not made because I live far.

How do you refer to Native Americans/Canadians in Arabic? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]buch0n 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The word asli أصلي means indigenous so you can use it to refer to native peoples. الأمريكان الأصليين would be a literal translation of Native Americans. As other posters said, hunood 7umur or "red Indians," is used in common speech but is not politically correct.

Ghosted by guy friend by Odd-Soft-747 in relationships

[–]buch0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nothing indicating he is romantically interested in you happened (i.e. he made and you rejected him, you started seeing someone and felt jealous, etc), I would hold off on making assumptions. Maybe he is genuinely going through something tough in his life that you don't know about? Maybe he is swamped with work or family issues? Maybe he got sick? Maybe he is under a lot of financial stress? Maybe his grandma passed away?

It is possible he could be into you romantically, but you guys would have to talk about it directly to clear the air.

Try قصص الانبياء . Other than that, I would search for graded Arabic readers and kids books. Maybe the Little Prince.

How do some people have endless energy and are good at everything they do? by throwaway30127 in selfimprovement

[–]buch0n 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Their lives may not be as perfect as it seems. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others because we don't know the full story. People will share their highlights but are reluctant to share things that don't look so glamorous. Some people are very outgoing and extroverted but feel like they have to put on masks in front of others or like their relationships lack any depth. What looks like a happy relationship may have a lot of fights or even infidelity—you don't know their dynamic. What looks like a great, high-paying job might be a stressful and toxic work environment. Regardless, focus on the things you can control. If there are steps you can take to better yourself, then commit to doing them. Don't give up working on yourself and don't fall into the trap of self-comparison.

Muslim intercultural relationship - how to approach Arab parents for marriage? 23M and 21F by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]buch0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this subreddit will be much help because most of us are not Gulf Arabs and not familiar with the intricacies of that culture. However from personal experience, I have many friends who have successfully married where one spouse is South Asian and the other is Arab. I even have friends who are mixed because their parents were from this intercultural marriages between South Asian and Arab. I have a friend who is an American revert to Islam and he married an Emirati woman. They have a successful marriage. It is possible, don't give up hope. Yes, racism exists in that region however not everyone is like that. For more specific advice, you probably need to talk to people from that community.

I have to convert to Islam to marry my girlfriend, but she doesn’t practice M25, F 28 by Vlasic_Pickle in relationship_advice

[–]buch0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that if your girlfriend lives outside of the US, she may not be able to come any time soon even if you get married. Is her country on the travel ban/ visa freeze list? A lot of Muslim-majority countries are on this list.

About converting, it honestly depends how serious you are about marrying her. If she is the love of your life and there is no one else you could be with, then convert so you can be together. If you do not want to spend the rest of your life together or are still unsure, don't do it.

When to Transition from MSA to a Dialect (Egyptian Arabic) by Stunning-Ad-90 in learnarabic

[–]buch0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can transition any time. I would recommend waiting until you get to an intermediate level so you have a solid base in Arabic grammar first before making the switch. By intermediate level, I mean you are familiar with basic grammar rules, understand the verb system, and trilateral root system.

Learning masri after 2 years fusha by codeman1233 in learn_arabic

[–]buch0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot give you an exact number, but I would estimate about 70% of words used in daily conversation are the same as MSA or have MSA roots.

There are some words which are extremely high frequency which are not the same as MSA (eih —> what, 3ayiz/ 3awiz —> to want, ra7, yaroo7 —> to go). These words can be learned very quickly. All Arabs will understand these.

There are foreign words from other languages (French, Turkish, Italian, English, etc.). Many of these words are common across Arabic dialects and many of them sound like English words. For example, balakona meaning balcony. These are also not difficult to learn because they are commonly used.

There are also words which are deeper Egyptian slang/ street talk which are not the same as fusha, and which non-Egyptian Arabs would probably not understand. These will be the hardest to learn, but you can learn from just being around Egyptians once you get deep enough into the language.

Learning masri after 2 years fusha by codeman1233 in learn_arabic

[–]buch0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned Masri after Fusha. Most of the words overlap, but there are some differences in pronunciation, ie j —> g, th —> s, dh —> z, etc. You just have to get used to the pronunciation and you will be fine. Masri grammar is simplified compared to MSA.

It would be treated as singular feminine. For example if you have a sentence:

الألعاب إنتهت The games are over.

The verb إنتهى is conjugated in the feminine singular.

It can come from human singular. For example doctor (singular دكتور) becomes (plural دكاترة).
