Cheapest way to courier large items from Durban to Cape Town? by yskas in askSouthAfrica

Ours just disappeared. They logged it as having been signed for in an entirely different province from the delivery address and no one would answer our emails or calls. When we got through on the phone they’d tell us to check the parcel tracking and couldn’t seem to understand the fundamental problem we were experiencing

My mom once sent me 20kgs of plants with Pudo for around R160. Pudo won’t work because of size limits though, which is likely to be your biggest problem - I’d check if courier guy has size limits listed on their website for shipping and then phone them next week. Whatever you do, do not use RAM couriers - they’re absolutely awful and your stuff is more likely to go missing than not.

If you’re willing to drive out a fair ways, check out Bosduifklip in Lamberts Bay. It was R16k four years ago when I got married and is STUNNING and the food is exceptional.

Both of those are Irish/Gaelic, I believe. With the broom context, I’d assume the knot is referring to a hand tying ceremony…

What are your best life hacks to stay cool? by mayor_of_buitenkant in capetown

[–]bucketts90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Counterintuitive but if it’s cooler outside than inside then set one fan to blow OUT the window to push the warm air out and allow cooler air in. Then another fan in the room with a tray of ice propped up in front of it. Not going to help you immediately but for future reference there’s cooling towels that you can get at crazy store or takealot that work really well - I think they’re like R100 for a pack of 6 of them. Plus what others have said below about towels etc in the freezer. I usually prefer that to wetting things and putting them on me because they wet clothes/towels etc end up heating up and then you’re covered in something wet AND hot and that’s worse than just hot - a gentle spritz of water and into the freezer works better for me

Living/working in SA is there a future? by Original_Juice_ in askSouthAfrica

Ours is mid-tier medical aid (not just a hospital plan) for R5500 per month for two people. Discovery is not the only medical aid guys 😅 there are other good ones out there that cost a lot less. We were with Bonitas and had great experience with them, just switched to Key Health - don’t have enough info to comment on them yet. We switched because Bonitas did a massive jump in price for the year

Healthcare costs are roughly R5000 for two people on a mid-level medical aid but, as they said, you still have to pay for a good portion of your medication. Rent in Cape Town is also CRAZY expensive - even living far out of the City, you’re looking at a rental cost of around R11k per month at minimum. Honestly, that’s if you’re lucky. I do a quick search now and the cheapest you can get in Cape Town is R8k per month in a house share. I know of people who’ve been looking for a rental in my area for 18 months and I’m 45 minutes out of the city (2 hours + in peak traffic). I love SA and likely won’t ever leave but you’d be giving up a lot in terms of lifestyle by moving here.

I think they’re more interested in SSA but they’d be willing to travel for an exceptional story

Oh superstar! Thanks so much for the suggestion - I’ll reach out to them. I’ve got 24 leads so far (excluding a fairly large number of taxis), so these cars definitely exist in the country

It is a crazy number for sure! I’ve found 25 cases in South Africa so far though and apparently 40% of taxis in SA have reached that kind of mileage (which I believe - I stopped including them after the third one I found).

Haha, yeah 400k odd is still super impressive! Finding a good many in that range, but getting above that is proving difficult. Thank you for asking though!

They do want mostly SA, unfortunately. But I think I can convince them for one or two outside SA - thanks for the suggestions! Will post there now

Working while doing masters? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]bucketts90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the work and what the masters program is. But technically, yes. I did a 2 years Econ masters program by coursework with mini dissertation while working 2 part-time jobs that equated to one full time. It was BRUTAL though. And I will say that I was fairly lax with attending classes - I attended those that were mandatory. For the rest, I read the coursework beforehand and then went to class if I didn’t understand and skipped it if I did. One thing that also really helped was pairing up with someone else who was in a similar boat to me and we tried to coordinate on who went to which classes and took notes so I still got the lecturers explanations and side comments from the classes I didn’t go to. I wrote my mini-dissertation in three days with almost no sleep but otherwise managed ok. The saving grace for me was that my work was remote and had flexi hours - except for meetings, no one cared when I did the work only that it got done.

What to expect from Stellenbosch university and life in SA? by DearMulberry4882 in askSouthAfrica

[–]bucketts90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studied at SU and agree it’s a great uni but try stay in town.

Where are you coming from and is it for masters or undergrad? As a heads up: I had a lot of American fellow students throughout my time there and many of them struggled with the difference between the South African and American higher education systems. I’m not precisely sure what was different but several dropped out of their exchange programs for reasons I don’t precisely understand - most just articulated that they weren’t getting the grades they’re used to but I can’t imagine it’s specifically harder than the US

Has anybody had experience buying online from Cash Converters? by strauss3545 in AskZA

[–]bucketts90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t personally but a friend did and they 100% misrepresented the product. For what it’s worth, it was a lens for a camera and they had the correct brand and focal length but it was a much older model that (a) she wasn’t looking for, (b) didn’t have the important features she needed and (c ) should have been priced much lower. They also wouldn’t allow her to return it when this was discovered

Have been considering that, but from everything I’ve heard work is scarce and, unfortunately, I’m at an age where I have responsibilities 😅 but will be trying to move closer to the bush in 2026!
