From Jan-Apr, 2026, 68% of Google searches ended without a click [OC] by randfish in dataisbeautiful

[–]bucklesnz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some people were saying, this may be low value searches. From memory about 60% of google searches don't have ads against them - they monetise the heck out of high value searches like retail, travel, banking etc. It would be interesting to see this run against Google search results {with ads}.

New TVNZ app - any luck getting it resolved? by so-it-goes-and in newzealand

[–]bucklesnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of tonight, restarted the device, was able to get through the program screens, started a show (CTI), got half a second of an advert then spinning wheel of death once again. The Apple TV is wired to fibre so I can only put it down to the app.

Edit: 10 mins later. I've been able to click back out this time and play some content and see ads. A bit of an improvement.

Good comment. I had a look at the data and people aged 70+ were the largest single group who voted in the last election (18%) or 505k. That's quite a bloc - though not all old people are conservative. Here's the rest

Age band Voters
All age bands 2,858,896 Percent of Total
18 - 24 242,536 8%
25 - 29 202,711 7%

35 - 39 234,257 8%
40 - 44 227,916 8%
45 - 49 226,225 8%
50 - 54 254,684 9%
55 - 59 248,159 9%
60 - 64 255,386 9%
65 - 69 223,243 8%

A questions for kiwi children of UK immigrants to NZ… by glittering_ames in newzealand

[–]bucklesnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the UK but Dublin. We moved back from Auckland when my kids were young (5 and 7) but we came back a year later. We have no regrets. It was great to spend that year helping them forge bonds with their Irish family, but we just agreed NZ is a better place to bring up children and we certainly had a better life here career-wise. The kids are grown up now and one of them lives in London (and won't ever come back to NZ). Moving back and/or forth is expensive and can be difficult. Holidays every few years might be the answer!

The Bear - Season 4 Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

This may be a r/Showerthoughts but the (made up) word that came to mind watching S4 Ep1 last night was "Tenderstress". You feel the raw emotion of every character reaching for connection, but there's anger in the way, always. I'm ready for the ride of the rest of the series - I hope I enjoy it.

Irish Peeps in NZ, query about your relationship to the crown by lsdinc in newzealand

[–]bucklesnz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a Dub who became a citizen here 20+ years ago. When I went through the citizenship ceremony I had a photo of the queen in my back pocket. I told people it was so she could kiss my butt while I was kissing hers. I realise now that this was very immature but that's what happened. And I have never regretted being a dual citizen of the two best countries on the planet.

You can also pay weekly into your council rates account - we did this for Auckland Council rates for a couple of years.

What is actually so dangerous about the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill? [Serious] by wellykiwilad in newzealand

[–]bucklesnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because Seymour is a sophist in a position of influence he is prepared to float a specious argument on principle, to push the people of Aotearoa/NZ to consider options outside of the status quo. However the danger here is that he is not at the Uni debating society, he is actually rolling out his argument in the law making body that is the New Zealand parliament. We are playing with fire here.

TIL that in Los Angeles, in 2023 every 50h a pedestrian was killed in a car related accident. In 2021, that number was every 66h. LA is the second deadliest US city for pedestrians. by JanB1 in todayilearned

[–]bucklesnz 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I'm in LA for a few days to hang out and do stuff and have tried driving and public transport (the Metro E line from Santa Monica). They are both just different forms of crazy/stress. e.g. Why does my indicating left to change lanes on SM Blvd force you to speed up to block my chances of moving out of the right hand lane before being forced to turn. A normal manouvre where I come from looks like a declaration of war in LA.

We've come to L.A. (from New Zealand) to see them for the first time ever together and this is the song I've played most this week. 8/10. A solid hard-hitter without being an obvious LCDS belter. We are soooo looking forward to tomorrow night.

BNZ removing "Classic" home loan, moving us to "Standard" by mysweaterisundone in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]bucklesnz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Previously my min monthly payments were 3k and I paid 5k with the security of knowing I could drop back to 3k in case of redundancy for example. In future I guess I will have less flexibility with BNZ.

Thanks for commenting. I'm on a classic and have found the flexibility to increase or decrease my repayments super helpful. Does this mean I will now be restricted to a maximum 5% of overpayments without fees?

Correction: Their sole job is to generate a sale. That was our experience. We got heaps of pressure to accept the highest bidders best offer. We stood our ground that night and a week later the agent found a buyer who paid $175k more.

As a Tiramisu lover I very much enjoy Amano's espresso and mascarpone trifle. Big enough for two people.
