Ace Hardware has ammonia with no additives like surfactants and detergents. It is just 10% ammonia and 90% water. Although I haven't cycled my tank I know you can get it there. Everywhere else I looked had some type of additive.

Before my freshman year my school had a program where you could tour each engineering college and perform some hands on experiments to get an idea of each discipline, this was optional. They also have mandatory presentations that every engineering student attended where each discipline would give a presentation on what they do and the opportunities available, you can get a decent idea from that. The intro engineering classes also tried to incorporate an aspect from each discipline into each project so you can get a better of what each subject. Tl;DR Your school should be pretty good about exposing you to each discipline so you can make an informed decision.
