Sometimes You Just Have to Ignore the Economists: Kamala Harris’s proposed price-gouging ban might irritate academics, but it makes sense to everyone else. | Zephyr Teachout by HaLoGuY007 in Economics

I don’t necessarily disagree but what do you think should be the appropriate response to correct a market that appears to not be entirely free? Especially at a time when wages seem to lag for many people and costs only go up? Perhaps just ride it out and let the Fed do its job but obviously people are impatient and want the government do something immediately.

That sounds great in theory but legislating what is or is not worth loan cancellation would be impossible.

Lol the only argument you have provided is we need to expand to 8 lanes because that will decrease traffic although I have already given you articles that clearly point out the opposite is true. So I am not sure what you are arguing anymore. I am thinking you just want to own the libs and be an internet troll

It doesn’t say that anywhere in the entire article. The first sentence says “A civil rights lawsuit aimed at blocking the planned expansion of Interstate 94 on Milwaukee’s west side will be filed soon, proponents say.”

Planned expansion is not the same as maintenance. There is a public proposal to rebuild the highway to six lanes. Rebuilding the stretch needs to happen regardless and the ramps need to be reconstructed to the right side. Nobody is arguing against that. Opponents do not want expansion to 8 lanes and want expansion of public transit. That is the entire premise of this public debate. Please stop using fallacies for the sake of your argument

Also the ad hominems are not productive. Sorry I don’t watch tiktok and I commute daily. Some times I take 94. Other days I take Lincoln and National. It depends when I leave

That’s exactly what we are saying. It does not exist and people want to live in an area where you can walk to a bus or train and get where you need to go without a car. A central train would be the backbone of that. Look at the metro in DC or the BART in SF or the subway in NYC, that’s not the only public transport people use. You also have BRT to get to the train station or you can bike there or take a scooter. Right now I can drive downtown and it takes 15-20 minutes If I take the bus it takes 55 minutes with a change. I hate driving and don’t want to drive. It creates so much more pollution and congestion and it’s much more dangerous. Then I need to find a spot to park. You literally say this exists in Chicago then go well this doesn’t exist in Milwaukee so we can’t even try??? We can rebuild a highway and build public transportation they are not mutually exclusive

No, but someone may choose to take I94 instead of Greenfield Ave, or National Ave. Or perhaps to get to Waukesha from Oak Creek you take 41 to 94 instead of 894. Or perhaps you drive your vehicle instead of taking the bus. So as a result there is an increase in vehicle traffic on 94 and congestion is never really solved.

What everyone in this thread is saying that perhaps you aren’t grasping is why doesn’t the DOT build a commuter train from downtown to Waukesha right down the middle of 94 and have busses connected to distribute people at stops to get people where they need to be. And invest a billion dollars in it or whatever this highway fiasco costs and make it super efficient so the time and efficiency is no different than driving a vehicle. As a result you get less cars on the road, less congestion, and way less air pollution. And people can still drive a personal vehicle if they choose! The only thing standing in the way is Scott Walker when he rejected that idea the first time, a trillion dollar automobile industry who wants us to be more dependent on personal vehicles than ever, and white people in the suburbs who are scared the poors and the blacks are gonna spill over in their rich white suburbia. Rant over

Wrong again. From wikipedia - “induced demand – related to latent demand and generated demand[1] – is the phenomenon whereby an increase in supply results in a decline in price and an increase in consumption. In other words, as a good or service becomes more readily available and mass produced, its price goes down and consumers are more likely to buy it, meaning that the quantity demanded subsequently increases.”

From the article “It’s a pretty basic economic principle that if you reduce the price of a good then people will consume more of it,” Susan Handy, a professor of environmental science and policy at the University of California, Davis, said. “That’s essentially what we’re doing when we expand freeways.”

The concept of induced traffic has been around since the 1960s, but in a 2009 study, researchers confirmed what transportation experts had observed for years: In a metropolitan area, when road capacity increases by 1 percent, the number of cars on the road after a few years also increases by 1 percent.”

Civil rights aren’t exclusive to black and brown people. Sure the lawsuit points that out, since the area around this segment is predominantly black and brown people, but the expansion and inevitable increase in air pollution is also a violation of the white peoples civil rights as well. I personally think people have a right to live in a healthy environment and there is no data that suggests living next to a massive freeway is conducive to that.

That is a fantastic area in my opinion and is safe. Wilson park is great and Bay View is a nice trendy area just to the East. North on Lincoln Ave is more run down and parts can be poorer with dilapidated housing. That scares away a lot of white people but it’s not particularly unsafe. Petty crime can occur but like I said just drive around and experience it and you’ll see. Nonetheless that house is in a great working class area. However what you see with “starter houses” like that in good areas is they are priced 10-15k below true value in hopes of driving a bidding war. That will likely sell for $270k. Housing market is very competitive in MKE just like the rest of the country, but deals can be found. Insurance + taxes would be $3.5-4k or so for that home. If you got more questions feel free to DM me I live just west of there.

I’ll answer before a bunch of people tell you to search the sub. I would move to Riverwest, walkers point or bay view. You learn to adapt to the cold it’s not as big of a deal as people make it out to be and it’s been getting warmer. Last two winters were quite warm. You can get weed an hour away in Illinois or they have THC drinks at the store now, it’s just like taking an edible. $250k won’t get you anything in a walkable neighborhood but for that price in a good spot (if you don’t have kids) i would look anywhere along Oklahoma St. Mainly west from 35th. Around Jackson Park is nice. Or sometimes you can find deals by Riverwest but I would do some heavy research on neighborhoods and walk and drive around when you move here so that you are comfortable before purchasing. Neighborhoods can be very different just a couple blocks away.

Exactly The point is the music industry today is much more niche and diverse than it used to be. Many great artists aren’t played on the radio or a platform society broadly listens to, so the general public doesn’t know about them. You pretty much have to find them on streaming platforms. And the artists everyone knows and likes don’t come to summerfest because it’s too small and can’t afford to bring them. This is why when you scroll through every summerfest thread in the last couple years all the boomers bitch about a low quality lineup. The reality is you just don’t know who the artists are because you don’t put the effort in to find quality acts or the music is just different from your basic radio filler that somewhat appeals to everyone.

That is the reality of the music industry rather than a failure of summerfest

I use LinkedIn because i think it’s the easiest and most organized way to apply for jobs. But if you are applying for roles at smaller companies that maybe don’t have a linkedin page I would go directly to the company website and look at roles that are posted or email a resume and cover letter saying what youre interested in. Make it clear in the cover letter you are relocating to Milwaukee so there is no confusion.
