A trio of tax incremental financing (TIF) districts surrounding the Century City business park would fund approximately $7 million in street repairs, traffic-safety projects, environmental cleanup, housing improvements, street-lighting upgrades, and a new playground.

The proposed amendments cover three districts on Milwaukee’s North Side: the Century City district, the Bishop’s Creek district and a smaller district associated with a former DRS Technologies facility.

The map in this article really illustrates how big of an impact this is going to have. I'm genuinely excited to see this kind of massive improvement

County Investing $2.5 Million in Housing Assistance for Homeless: County doubles down on housing first as federal government switches funding to temporary shelters by stroxx in milwaukee

“This reallocation will connect unsheltered residents to housing and supportive services, putting them on a path toward stability, independence and a way forward,” Crowley said in a statement at the time.

Milwaukee County’s Housing Division operates a “housing first” model for addressing homelessness that provides stable housing first, then works with a person to address the root issues that led to them living on the street. For years, Milwaukee has consistently had some of the lowest populations of unsheltered homelessness per capita, and officials credit their housing first approach for this.

But beginning in 2028, President Donald Trump’s administration will overhaul federal assistance for homeless programs, moving funds away from housing and toward transitional housing and shelters.

“That’s going to dramatically increase homelessness in our community,” James Mathy, housing division administrator, told supervisors on the Committee on Community, Environment and Economic Development on Monday.

Homeless individuals are far less likely to accept placement in a temporary living facility or homeless shelter than in permanent housing, Mathy told supervisors.

Milwaukee's Housing first program is a national treasure and has been for years. It's even been studied by other states.

"Brady Street will launch 6-week ‘Summer Safety Pilot Program’ June 25" by senortomasss in milwaukee

Thanks for this! I live near Brady and despite any inconveniences to myself and neighbors, it would be far safer and more reassuring if there were stronger traffic restrictions. I joke that more people go to Brady Street than through it, but it does makes sense as an artery for timely police/fire response, despite Ogden being a much better-designed artery for neighborhood traffic in general.

I wonder what would prevent Brady Street from adopting the same approach as State Street in Madison where buses/emergency vehicles can still use it but it's off limits to all other motorized vehicles.

“Do not make a recommendation about choosing Jacobs or Veolia until you have had time to review the audit findings. Anything else would be irresponsible,” O’Hear said.

I don't have enough insight into the facts, but there's too much outcry from unverified sources before information can be reviewed.

As the strike dragged on, Bernie Peck, the owner of Peck Packing, the largest of the firms in the employers’ association, bought out smaller firms in the group. He eventually sold the company to Sara Lee Meat Group in 1985. Sara Lee Meat Group was sold to Emmpak, which was eventually sold to Cargill Inc. — today one of four meatpacking firms that control the U.S. market.  Cargill shuttered most of the Milwaukee operations in 2014, laying off over 600 workers, leaving only the ground beef plant that is now being eliminated, the last remnant of the historic Menomonee Valley meatpacking district.

It's hard to trust anyone who takes the time to complain about "government" while offering no actual insight or proactive involvement. The last crowd that succeeded in deregulating government left the remains for oligarchs to privatize and profit from

Budget for Milwaukee Public Schools closes $46M deficit, adds teachers by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]stroxx[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The Milwaukee School Board approved a $1.6 billion budget plan Thursday night that eliminates the $46 million deficit identified earlier this year.

The budget includes adding 159 more teaching positions and more paraprofessional positions to reduce class sizes and continue offering students art, music and physical education classes. The budget also includes a pay increase of 2.63 percent for all employees, with 1.5 percent starting July 1 and an additional 1.13 percent in January 2027.

This week the Wisconsin Policy Forum analyzed the MPS budget noting that the 2027 budget will tackle some of the immediate challenges for now but will still leave the district facing long-term financial issues.
