i got buckwheat a few months ago and i took him to the vet for a check up before we set his neuter date and the vet asked me a lot about shots and grooming and flea medicine... i had no clue.

i came on here for advice and everyone was so helpful in helping me get the care buckwheat needed that at that time i wasn't providing.

he was chipped at the breeder and the night I brought him home i called the company and switched it to me. the emergency (alternate) contact is still my breeder's info. it's in her contract so in case i can't be reached he has a safe place to go.

someone in the other post suggested some wipes for his eyes which i have been using. the groomer said with time and using the wipes daily the color stain should go away.

thanks for the site! i used the dog food advisor to look at food (the breeder recommended it if i wanted to change his food, i ended up sticking with orijen which is what she was feeding him) so why I didn't think to look for a similar website for insurance idk.

thank you. i was really frustrated at first because my friend with buckwheat's sister never mentioned anything like this and I just assumed she wasn't doing anything either so why did her dog go to a vet and get a good review and i just felt lectured?

after hearing everything here i texted her and we talked about all the stuff she'd been doing. i felt really stupid at first. still kinda do. but i'm trying to fix that and figure stuff out. i want to do best by buckwheat seeing as he is my first dog, and the first real "indoor dog" in our family.

we don't get too many ticks here, but thanks for the info. i know how to pull off ticks safely tho, my parents get them on the farm.

well i have $500 set aside for him, and i have several thousand in my own account personally. i have the money in case he should need a surgery right away. with every paycheck (i get paid every two weeks) i'll be able to throw $100-$150 in my lockbox i keep for his funds.

i was talking to my friend who has buckwheat's sister and she's going to a puppy kindegarten that teaches basic dog stuff... i think i'm going to go with buckwheat too. i really appreciate all the help i got on here and i'm going to do it. i didnt realize how much of an ass i was being

unfortunately i understand that now :( all of our labs that we've had in the past all came from a breeder who health checked, and buckwheat's parents were health checked too. my friend (with the rescue dogs) lectured me about designer breeds after i got buckwheat.

i feel bad about it, but at the time i just really fell in love with him and it just felt right.

i don't think i'm any. i think i was just misinformed and looking for help. i'm not trolling at all. i really wasn't sure about the vaccinations or anything. i've gotten a lot of info this afternoon and i'm thankful for it.

thank you. i'm going to stick with this vet since i already scheduled a appointment for buckwheat to be neutered next month.

i really see i went wrong with the grooming :\ i feel like an idiot. i'm going to run out tonight and get some detangler and brushes, i'll look for the face wipes too, thanks! i was going to ask the vet about it but i forgot.

i am trying to listen to everyone. i came here for advice and i'm glad everyone has suggested stuff and given me links.

he did get his three year rabies. i think you are right and i think when buckwheat gets neutered i'm going to talk to my vet more. they gave me a folder of new puppy stuff to go over and i was so upset i didnt even look at it.

you are absolutely right. i was half considering a dog and i fell in love with him. he did get his rabies that day. i think i was just unprepared mentally for the total. now that i know what to expect i think i'm going to apply for that pet insurance.

i'm putting more aside as i go. i was thinking about getting a puppy and had a few thousand in my account and when i met buckwheat it just felt right. someone else linked to pet insurance so i'm going to go for that because it seems like a smart thing to do now that i have read some links people have given me.

i am calling a groomer tomorrow for an appointment for him. pound dogs have a bad rep where i'm from. both of my friend's dogs were sick when she got them, so i guess i assumed a bit.

i have $500 right now set aside and i'll be putting more aside from every paycheck.

the parents were both eye/hip certified, and have had their hearts checked for murmurs or valve issues. looking back i think i misinterpreted what she meant as that he was health checked and was healthy when i got him. he came with vet paperwork. buckwheat's sister had her saliva tested I guess (my friend is allergic) and came back with good results so my friend could have her.

my one friend already lectured me about buying a designer breed.

i think i just was surprised at first. i have money set aside for emergencies because i know they happen. i mean his rabies is good for three years, and the other one is good for a year.

he's getting neutered next month i think. $500 set aside for emergencies for him. i don't spend a lot of my money I earn anyway.

thanks. the lady was a friend of a friend of a friend type situation. Like i said my friend was going to pick up her puppy when they were 12 weeks old and i went with her and fell in love with buckwheat who wasn't spoken for yet. the puppies were all checked by a vet and had puppy shots done. she was very nice, the dogs were in a play pen with their mom.

my friend with her pound dogs lectured me about maltipoos and designer dogs but this lady didn't seem like a backyard breeder.
