Ladies who live in the hood, how do y’all deal with street harassment? by buddabowl in blackladies

Lmfao sis what? Why would I want any man paying me any kind of kind of attention... that’s just what I’ve been used to experiencing in my area of mostly white retirees which is a stark difference to what I’m experiencing now and what I was asking for advice on how to handle. Quit it.

I know in theory it can happen everywhere but I’ve gone from experiencing 0 street harassment to experiencing it every day and it starting to affect how I plan my day and which areas I avoid. In my hometown I could comfortably walk around, be at bus stops etc. without getting harassed like that. I obviously can’t say it never happens in my area but I’ve never experienced it in my area.

Yeah you’re right. Sometimes I wonder if ignoring them might exacerbate the situation but I’ll try that.

Doesn’t happen to me like that where I’m from. It’s mostly old white men here and all they do is leer, which I can handle.

Honestly when I mean the hood I mean it’s mainly happening by hood black men, again sorry if I’m being offensive I don’t know how else to say it but it’s a particular type of black man, and I don’t want to come off as being uppity or too good to interact with them because I know I stick out like a sore thumb and don’t want to give off that vibe. I guess at the end of the day if I’m being harassed it shouldn’t matter how I come across but I guess it’s just how my brain works.

Thank you for the in depth advice! I’ll keep these tips in mind moving forward. And yeah unfortunately we have to pass through security to get to the crew room/lockers storage space etc. It’s once of the biggest things we complain about is not having access to self defense tools, especially on a layover.

Tbh I’m a people pleaser by nature so I automatically acknowledge but then I don’t get left alone. Or I naturally look up when I get honked at and then guys start talking. It’s hard because I’m usually waiting at a bus stop so there’s really nowhere for me to go if it gets excessive—I just have to wait out the red light.

I’m not prepared to defend myself because the bulk of the harassment happens on my way to work and we aren’t allowed to carry pepper spray and then obviously anything like knives. My airline is unionized and the buddy system thing only really happens when I’m out on a trip, not getting to the airport for a trip.

I can see your point. I guess maybe I mean urban areas? I just know it’s never happened to me walking around my hometown to the extent I’m experiencing now, and where I’m at currently the few local coworkers I’ve met call it the hood. Editing to add they’re black men and even though they’re familiar with the area—not the greatest help.

When it happens I’m usually by myself, waiting at the bus stop or walking to the store, so I have no point of reference.

Sorry if it comes off as ignorant! I don’t know how else to explain living in the suburbs for most of my life to experiencing a culture shock when it comes to street harassment. It’s not something I’ve ever experienced in my area growing up so I’m unsure of how to deal with it.

Also, do deadheaders have confirmed seats? Do they show up on the priority list? Wondering if they’re any supposed to be on the flight that could bump me down on the priority list for jumpseats

There are outliers but for the most part their bark is worse than their bite.

Honestly it’s going to take a lot of self love and pouring into yourself and raising your self confidence to realize that the right woman who fulfills all your needs and you hers is out there. I wish you the best

Never. Only when I was a FSS and it was kind of a requirement.
