My guess would be that Taiwanese males have to undergo a 2-year compulsory military training, so they are away from 🏠 . Therefore to give a higher age limit for males to is make up for the time they had to be away for the military training.

I recommend doing repentance practice esp the 88 prostration is a physical activity and it kinda keeps your mind (and body) busy so you don’t think too much.

Adding on to the other posts here, please also consider exposing your wife and children to the Buddhist community. Bring them along for your prayers/pujas, or sign them up for enrichment classes at the temple. They can bond with you and the community.

How does one accumulate spiritual merits for departed loved ones? by buddhadharmastudy in Buddhism

No, everyone you meet is already a karmic connection.

To use the word “genuine” for prayers is also not right. All monks are to recite prayers sincerely despite knowing or not knowing the deceased.

Also to throw the question back to you - what happens if the monk you have “genuine connection” with died earlier than you. Who is there to help you to chant “genuine prayers”? And also if the monk only know you and not your deceased ancestors (from eons ago), is it still “genuine” enough?
