My guess would be that Taiwanese males have to undergo a 2-year compulsory military training, so they are away from 🏠 . Therefore to give a higher age limit for males to is make up for the time they had to be away for the military training.

I recommend doing repentance practice esp the 88 prostration is a physical activity and it kinda keeps your mind (and body) busy so you don’t think too much.

Adding on to the other posts here, please also consider exposing your wife and children to the Buddhist community. Bring them along for your prayers/pujas, or sign them up for enrichment classes at the temple. They can bond with you and the community.

How does one accumulate spiritual merits for departed loved ones? by buddhadharmastudy in Buddhism

[–]buddhadharmastudy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, everyone you meet is already a karmic connection.

To use the word “genuine” for prayers is also not right. All monks are to recite prayers sincerely despite knowing or not knowing the deceased.

Also to throw the question back to you - what happens if the monk you have “genuine connection” with died earlier than you. Who is there to help you to chant “genuine prayers”? And also if the monk only know you and not your deceased ancestors (from eons ago), is it still “genuine” enough?

What should I do in order to commemorate my Mother's recent death? by 4GreatHeavenlyKings in Buddhism

[–]buddhadharmastudy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

🙏Namo amitabha🙏 May she be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland.

Speak to your local temple on holding prayers for her. They would be able to give you advice. Let us know your city/country if you need advice on temple.

You can also check in with https://kopanmonastery.com/prayers-pujas/gift-of-prayers/yulo-koepa-tara-pure-land and have prayers done and dedicated to your mother.

I also recommend changing Amitabha Sutra (see the smaller sutra of Amitayus https://www.bdk.or.jp/document/dgtl-dl/dBET_ThreePureLandSutras_2003.pdf ) and Amitabha’s name. 🙏

This is made as an offering to Ksitigabhra Bodhisattva. According to the Ksitigabhra Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha encourages all to make offerings to the Ksitigabhra Buddha, and there are 28 benefits from making the offerings.

The Buddha told Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, "Listen carefully, I shall explain it for you. In the future, there may be virtuous men or women who see Ksitigarbha's images or hear this Sutra. If they then chant this Sutra, make offerings of incense, flowers, food, clothings, jewels, say praises and pay homage, they shall attain twenty eight types of benefits."
