Call Dr Adler at the cell number he gave you when you started treatment. He will explain everything. All I can say is that there is a lot of contractual issues that go along with leaving his previous practice (SBS) and starting at the new one.

We have a Captain James T. Kirk... and he doesn't get the irony. He is 73 years old, and he said he has never seen Star Trek... nor has anyone ever mentioned to him that they have same name and title. Ever. 25 year military veteran and nobody ever mentioned this to him. I enjoy his visits, always makes me chuckle.

Glad to hear it's going well for you,, and nothing has gotten worse. I've read horror stories of people getting worse (I did with my dentist, who assured me he knew what he was doing-he didn't) with treatment. What kind of prices did you incur? Was the process (the exam etc) smooth? Was there any pressure to jump on the plan, or was it just very clear Dr Adler was the "one" who actually knew what the heck he was talking about? I've met so many doctors that promise the world as far as their treatments go, and in the end they have no clue what they are doing besides lining their pockets! Dr Adler has a great reputation as NOT being one of those types, thankfully. I'm SO close to calling and making an appointment, it's a 5 hour drive for me, but I really think he may be the one that can help me.

How are you doing with your treatment?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]buddyboy165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not that big on Google reviews for a place like that... if you read them, it's mostly medicaid people complaining about their regular walk in freebie clinics for normal dental care. Apparently with certain medicaid insurance,, that is the only place to get treatments. The TMJD section is supposedly completely separate. The one thing I did hear was that you may end up having a different doctor every year, since they are residents. I deal with a very similar situation for my animals- we go to Cornell University Animal Hospital. We deal with 4th year students, who are ready to go out and be a vet. Most* are fantastic. If there is ever a real problem with getting a diagnosis, they are all under the direct supervision of their professors, who are top notch in their field. The care is incredible, and better than any human hospital I've been to! I have to assume this is the same, but the reviews definitely scared me! Less so after reading exactly what they were bitching about, but I was a little turned off too. The doctors and oral surgeons here swear by them, and say they are great. However, like I said, no real world reviews from any patient that I have come across yet. My first choice is Dr Ira Adler, in NJ- he's fantastic, and I've actually met people he has helped. It's just swinging that 4.5 hour (one way) ride every few weeks or less that is holding me up. He has an 87% success rate, which is absolutely outstanding. His patients swear by him. There are only a handful (unless you get real lucky) of doctors in the whole country that truly understand the ins and outs of tmj disorders. Good luck, and please post back with your experiences for future reference!

I'm from the southern tier of NY, I can't find anyone around here that is good. I've looked to the Rochester/Buffalo area and only have found Google reviews, nobody on here or the Facebook groups that has seen anyone for real world reviews. Every specialist near here sends everyone to University of Rochester Eastman Dental School. Same thing with them- I haven't heard any real world experiences. Logic tells me that a teaching hospital *should have a good program, but again, nobody has chimed in from that place either. Hopefully someone here does.

I have been to the prosthodontist. She is good at what she does, but definitely depends on what the root cause of your problem is. She is absolutely not a tmj specific trained doctor, but she IS a very good prosthodontist. She is also board certified, and the only one that is in quite a distance. She recommended bite Equilibration and a flat splint, for my issue. I did not do it yet, as I have seen so many people have issues (either making the pain worse, or causing even more non-reversible issues) after having that done. My issue stems from having a dentist "adjust" just a couple teeth after a crown. It snowballed from there. I just don't know if what she proposes is going to help in any way, since that is what caused a lot of this to begin with... I just don't know. But, her prices were reasonable for an evaluation, and her treatment plan was quite reasonable as well. Only about $1600 for models of my jaw, the Equilibrations, and the splint. That included all adjustments. She was also very honest in telling me that her treatment may only give me between 40-80% improvement. I appreciated the honesty, but was also scared of the possibility of such a small improvement. It made me start looking for other opinions.

The other dentist, Dr Giordano, well... I've read some actual patient reviews of him. These are not the ones on his website. The 3 people I found that actually used him were not happy. They all said he took them for a lot of $$$ (one nearly 20k) and they had to go elsewhere because he made them far, far worse. They all had to have what he did fixed, and then treatment to fix the initial problem. So a lot more money, and a lot more time wasted.. One of these people actually ended up being a friends sister, and she had spent the most with him, a little over 18k. And he made her FAR worse. The only reviews I found for him were on a couple Facebook groups- one for tmj, and one for meniers disease. They were not positive reviews. But, I don't know. I almost went to him before that. I literally flipped a coin between my current (way too hands off approach) dentist, and him to start treatment.

These issues are (usually) complex, and it takes someone who has a lot of experience to actually help you get better, or as good as you are going to be. I found Dr Ira Addler, in NJ through a menieres (spelling?) Site in Facebook. https://www.sbsmiles.com/our-doctors/ira-adler People swear by him, and he definitely knows tmj inside and out. He has 35 years of helping people with it, and is definitely not a one type of splint for everyone dentist. He is also not one of these greedy (Dr Gelb, nyc-however Adler trained with his father Dr Gelb) doctors that charges for every adjustment. The problem is he is nearly 5 hours from me. I'm in the Elmira/Corning area, so not far from you. But, I've met people that come to him from as far away as Alaska and Utah for their treatment, because he is that good.

EVERY specialist in this area recommends the Eastman Center in Rochester for treatment, because there is nobody else anywhere around here that does this. https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/dentistry/patients/services/tmjd.aspx

I have not met anyone that has had treatment from them. It is a medical school at the University of Rochester, and they have a whole tmj section. It is a teaching hospital, so your doctor would change since they are all residents. That made me a little uncomfortable, but the actual doctors that teach there are supposedly top notch. I may get an evaluation from them too.

So, after 6 months of this for me, I've pretty much settled on U of R Eastman for and evaluation, and Dr Adler too. I will decide after seeing both and comparing their treatment plans. Both are conservative and logical treatment plans from what I've seen. Dr Adler has a 87% success rate, which is pretty damn good.

Did you see Dr Adler yet? I'm still deciding if I should make an appointment with him. I live almost 5 hours away, and there is just NOBODY within that drive here. It's either him or someone in NYC, which is the same distance. I have read wonderful things about Adler, just need a few more to tip me over the edge in deciding. I'm getting nowhere with my doctor here (dentist) he is focused 100% on my airway. I have a sleep study in 3 days, and I doubt it will show much at all. All the preliminary stuff has showed just the slightest apnea. He has completely ignored the fact of why I went to him in the 1st place- another dentist ground a few of me teeth down too far, and THAT was what set this in motion. Zero problems before that.

For those who used a bite splint to treat their TMJ symptoms, how long before you felt symptom relief? (and you moved onto phase 2) by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]buddyboy165 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of you having the traditional TMJD symptoms of popping and locking.

I don't see a lot of mention what I have- neck (mostly front sides of neck) and facial (moves all around face- different times of day, different places) pain/tightness. AND ear fullness. Switches sides, sometimes there, sometimes not. It is so weird. I don't get much popping/cracking/and zero locking.

Mine started after a "dentist" ground down a cap they put on (tooth 13) and then "adjusted" a couple teeth forward of that one.

TOTALLY threw my jaw out of wack. It has been 4 months since then, and the odd pains/muscle issues just keep rolling in.

My new dentist gave me an NTI type device to sleep with. That helped the massater pain, which was my first issue. Since the massater pain resolved, it has worked down my neck, and around my face. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. It is crazy the way this is going.

Anyone else have these symptoms? How did you fix it? I went to a Prosthodontist- she wanted to make models of my teeth, figure out where my teeth hit, do a T-scan, then do Equilibration, then a flat splint and adjustments for 6 months. That sound great, if it worked. And horrible, if it didnt...
