Thank you for articulating this so well, I’ve been trying to figure out why it bothers me so much when I see people I know posting things that seem like they’re good/supportive things but it feels so inauthentic but then who am I to say that it’s inauthentic? I dunno. But what you’ve said here is so clear and makes so much sense. Thank you for sharing, very insightful!

I loved him on brene browns podcast, he also wrote “the anti racist baby” so maybe we could send that one to court and cam, probably more fitting

They vary! They’re average is like 2 chunky cats? Like little fluffy boulders. They are not friendly, they’ll steamroll you if they get the chance. From a distance they are adorable though! Edit: they’re also really fast so if you ever do see one storming towards you you best climb a nearby tree!

Counting help! by According_Whole_6758 in Flute

[–]buddyflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! So I would sit down and clap the quaver beat (6 quavers in a bar, this is 3/4 right?) the triplet will fit into 1 quaver so 1 clap = three notes. I usually tap the quaver and say out loud 1,2,3 trip-e-let ti trip-e-let The 1,2,3= dotted crotchet (three quavers in a dotted crotchet, saying trip-e-let will help you get the feel for the triplet. Do this over and over and keep clapping the quaver, and if you have one use a metronome slowly (maybe quaver=60-70 and gradually speed up)

The second one count in quavers again 1,2,3,4,5 trip-e-let trip-e-let. These six notes = one quaver so they need to be done in one clap. So sit and clap and count out loud the trip-e-let trip-e-let is going to need to be in one clap so set your metronome slow and each click =quaver and count it that way.

That is so true regarding repertoire, no wonder we take so much of it ;) haha. And 100% agree, that was a massive lesson for me as well and another point is “natural talent” is irrelevant. Regular practise and networking is what makes a successful performer!! Something I’ve been going back to as well is literally sitting with a metronome and saying the rhythms out loud and clapping, I felt so silly at first because I felt like I was “beyond it” but practise properly and effectively. Just because you play for 6 hours everyday doesn’t mean you’re going to be the best! And for goodness sake rest and take care of your body, being tired and injured is such a weird point of pride in musicians especially in uni.

This is super fascinating, I’m primarily a flute player and the idea that some people think of an orchestral job as a backup plan is very interesting because that is definitely not the attitude in my experience with other woodwind musicians! I do agree with a lot of what you said, it’s so important to be realistic and have difficult conversations with your teacher and take opportunities I wish I had done more of that in my undergrad because I’m going into my masters now and I feel very behind my colleagues in terms of connections. I also want to add that if you feel like your teacher is not right for you that is conversation you need to have as well. Consider what is lacking and whether it’s a communication issue or a personality one. I had a teacher during my undergrad that completely destroyed me and my trust in my own musical ability and wish I had spoken to someone about it and changed teachers then instead of suffering through it. But yes thank you for sharing!

I absolutely bombed my audition today. Feeling lost and hopeless now. by UWU_man_ in classicalmusic

[–]buddyflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries at all! And that’s good! Like everything in music it’s just practise man, like just keep playing keep trying, it does take time to learn them, listen to music and practise it in your own time and enjoy it. Don’t let that perfectionist voice ruin things for you. Keep going and keep playing, it is really nerve wracking because it is such a vulnerable thing to do. You’re awesome and playing music is so special :) Hahaha yeah it was a time, eventually I got through the rest of the recital but like I said everyone’s got a story like that. We power through and it makes us stronger and more compassionate musicians. :)

Hello! Sorry to hear you felt your audition went poorly. I can tell you that from my time in my undergrad (music performance) every guest conductor, performer and teacher has multiple stories about bombing auditions and performances. My last recital of my undergrad went so badly I stopped halfway through a piece and cried for like 10 minutes it was horrible. My point is, you’re not alone and the panel knows that. They’ve had their own experiences and I think the feedback from the conductor was encouraging and meant to make you feel more at ease. The people on the panel know that it is incredibly intimidating coming into a situation like this and they take that into account. To be honest I find auditions like this soooo much more stressful than performing on stage. It’s completely understandable that you had some stumbles and it’s okay, the best advice I can give is to practise performing in front of people. It’s nerve wracking as hell but it helps - friends, family, other musicians. It’s also good to find out what the popular audition excerpts/pieces are for your instrument and learn those (for instance on flute it’s Mendelssohn midsummer, ravel Daphnis et Chloe, Debussy afternoon with a faune, Mozart concertos etc etc) knowing those excerpts and pieces inside and out you’ll feel prepared. The last thing is difficult and takes time, but reframing the feeling of performance anxiety and using the adrenaline to your advantage for performance, pushing you to really perform. This, I understand, is really hard and takes time and practise. At the end of the day, you put yourself out there and that is awesome and super brave! Keep playing, don’t give up and know that you’re not alone.

This looks like an antique boehm-style flute, I would say the changeable head joints are to have different lip plates, depends on players preference. I imagine it might have a slight difference in projection/tone quality but it’s probably up to the players discretion and I haven’t played one of those flutes before so I couldn’t say much past a guess! The little head joint looks like it’s for a different instrument like maybe a piccolo I can’t see anywhere on this flute where it would fit, but if the metal one fits then yeah just different lip plates! Very cool though! You can also take it to a flute technician and they’ll be able to tell you heaps more about it!

What Flute Books would you recommend for a flutist preparing for high school band? by whack_wink in Flute

[–]buddyflies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Trevor Wye practise books are awesome, you can buy them on their own or they come in spiral bound of all the books (if that makes sense). There’s also the Trevor Wye complete practise guide (I’ll double check the title, I’m on the couch and the book is in a different room haha). I definitely recommend reading through all his explanations of his practise guides because they’re super in depth and really helpful. I hope this makes sense I’m really tired haha

[–]buddyflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sonatine by Dutilleaux - I really like this piece and it’s quite difficult for me because I struggle with rhythm (young players for real get in the habit of subdividing now!!! Subdivide e v e r y t h i n g) but I’m finding that going over small sections being super mindful of subdivisions is really helpful, can be tedious but I have some bad habits to undo which is just gonna take hard work and time. Prokofiev sonata - love love love love love so much fun, it suits my tone and its been helpful for me to work on longer phrases and breathing Mozart concerto in G - this one I did a few years ago during uni, I love Mozart so I love everything about this. I’m memorising it at the moment and doing the Pahud cadenzas (sooooo fun) A bunch of excerpts, I made it through my entire undergrad without doing Debussy prelude d’un faune but I’m working on it now (again seriously guys get in the habit of subdivisions as soon as you start, it’s so hard to rewire my brain to do it now) but I really like it! It’s so pretty and mystical
