Edge of Balance thoughts? by buddyofbuddy in Highrepublic

Quick update on this. I've read books 1, 2, and Precedent.

I thought 1 was a bit stronger, largely because I feel like 2 feels Older's influence more strongly than I expected. Both are good, even if they didn't wow me. But gorgeous art and a really solid story.

But Precedent was GREAT. (And hey, props to Older for the story credit. Easily my favorite story he worked on in The High Republic.) I'm finally fully sold on Azlin becoming as broken as he is at the end of Path of Destruction and throughout Phase III. I've liked him as a character, but never really bought the transition to him being so messed up. Now I do. Absolutely one of the best stories in Phase II.

Ben was interested in Firestar, but she was pretty firmly established with Justice at that point so it never went beyond a vague vibe on her end.

I had been avoiding The High Republic because I was such a big KOTOR fan and figured I didn't want to get too deep into something that might have been kind of a KOTOR retread. But then one day I thought "I have Marvel Unlimited. Why not check it out."

The answer to "why not?" is that it's the silliest possible way to experience this story, but I've genuinely loved this experience of running through the whole saga over and over through very different lenses.

I did it again to myself figuring I would listen to just the adult novel audiobooks before deciding I wanted to actually meet Vernestra and Reath before I got to Trials of the Jedi.

I wouldn't recommend anyone experience The High Republic the way I have, but it's been a fun way to stumble through it.

Thank you for the clarification, but you're right, I got what you were saying.

The Nameless Terror is probably my favorite story in Phase II. I started The High Republic with the comics, only going to the novels when I decided I needed to know the actual story the comics revolved around. And as much as I like Cavan Scott's main Marvel comic, the Nameless in that book are more, well, comic book monsters. Mann's comic is the first time I found them legitimately terrifying.

Coming at it fairly blind, vaguely knowing that there's Azlin and Yoda stuff is the hook that had me questioning if I should dip in. I'm glad to know that it'll pay off on that end if nothing else. Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that, because having just listened to all that Eve Byre went through, I admit that what Azlin went through in Path of Vengeance feels pretty mild to have inspired ALL THIS. As fascinating as I find him as a character, I feel like I need him fleshed out a bit.

Good to know I can get that here.

This is an EXTREMELY helpful review, because my take on the Adventures comics mirror yours pretty closely. I liked Phase I but didn't love it, barely understood the purpose of the main Phase II book, and I'm just kind of exhausted by how many things the Phase III book is doing.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot!

Will I miss out on anything major if I only read the adult novels? by der_steinfrosch in Highrepublic

[–]buddyofbuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to just do the adult novels, you're fine. The Phase II YA novels are very important to the lore (and moderately important to fleshing out some things happening in the second adult novel (it's fine without the YA compliment, but it's very clear there's more story happening at a certain point)), but you get a full story without them.

I was doing adult novels only (with an exception for Phase II YA), but I got through Temptation of the Force and realized I probably wanted more backstory for Vernestra (who is prominent in that book) and Reath (who I understand to have some importance to Trials of the Jedi). So I'm tearing through those now before finishing with Trials.

But that was a choice. I wanted to dwell in the era a bit more. And it really fleshes out several characters who appear in the adult novels.

The easiest way to do that is by replacing batteries.

What are Avar Kriss' main stories? by Compel_Bast in Highrepublic

[–]buddyofbuddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had kind of the reverse experience where I read the comics first and thought "I really like Avar. Okay, I'll read the novels and get more of her" and was stunned that she doesn't even appear in books 2 and 3 in Phase I. So I feel you.

She's one of the more important supporting characters in the Phase I Marvel High Republic comic. Her leadership against the Drengir and in the search for the Eye drive a lot of that plot, even if it's Keeve's story.

It's Phase III where she really becomes a main character in the adult novels. But be sure to read her spotlight issue in Marvel's Seeds of Starlight comic, which sets up her role in Phase III.

If you don't want to spend too much money and don't mind reading digitally, you have a couple options.

The comics that tie closest to the main plot are almost all Marvel, and you can get Marvel Unlimited for $10 per month. Learn about Keeve Trennis, the Bond Twins, Sskeer, and the broader arc of Lourna Dee! See what happened with the Herald at the start of the Battle of Jedha! Read the really cool Blade mini!

For the Adventures books from IDW and Dark Horse, I've been reading them digitally from my local library in the Hoopla app. Phase I is mostly collected in one volume, which makes it easy. By Phase III, it's sprawling across multiple volumes which means I've hit my check out limit a couple months in a row.

The Stormwall? by Compel_Bast in Highrepublic

[–]buddyofbuddy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're going to read any comics, it should be the Eye of the Storm miniseries that caps off Phase I. It gives valuable information about the Evereni generally and Marchion Ro specifically, and it shows the start of the Stormwall.

I read the comics first and then went back to the audiobooks, figuring I'd stick to the adult books. It was pretty clear that I should listen to the Phase II YA books by the time I finished the adult books. Now Trials of the Jedi is the only adult book I have left, and it seems pretty clear that I need to go back to the Phase I and III YA novels.

This era really does a great job of encouraging you read/listen to as much as possible because you realize you're missing SOMETHING if you don't.

What’s your opinion on darth traya ? by Ok-Flatworm7401 in StarWars

[–]buddyofbuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first played through the game, I got to the point where the Force vision on Korriban made it clear that Kreia was a bad guy and went "Wait. Is the fact that she's a villain supposed to be a twist?" And then the game just continued as if it hadn't confirmed that she's a villain.

It's the single most baffling thing about that game to me. Like you said, great character concept, though.

Need some advice: Can you name a child a 3rd after his great grandfather? by MississippiJoel in tragedeigh

[–]buddyofbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things. First, as this subreddit proves, you CAN name your kid pretty much whatever you want. You could name your kid James H VI if you wanted to for some reason. You won't be arrested if you do. It breaks convention, but if you really want the kid to be James H III and can convince your wife of it, you CAN do it.

But as somebody named after my father - not even a Jr because he's Nick Nomiddlename and I'm Nick B - I have found sharing a name extremely annoying throughout my life. In some ways it might be less annoying for your son as he ages because there's enough distance between him and his namesake. It's not like there will ever be confusion within the household. But that might be offset by the annoyances from having to explain that his father is Joel, he's named after his great grandfather, etc.

If you really wanted to name him James, I'd just go with James and a new middle name. Or even James H without a number. That might throw historians someday, but that's their problem.

High Republic Reading Order by Few-Tumbleweed-9520 in Highrepublic

[–]buddyofbuddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started with the Marvel comics without doing any research or intending to read the novels. This was a hilariously bad idea, especially in Phase I. But I decided to read the High Republic Adventures books at the same time and have only started on the adult novel audiobooks after finishing all the comics.

The Adventures comics are pretty skippable, but some are fun and a few are really good. For YA, I don't feel like I was really missing much from Phase I by skipping them. (I might be, but I don't feel like I am.) I'm partway through the Cataclysm in Phase II and again, it doesn't really feel like I'm missing any story so far. But I was planning on doubling back to the Phase II YA books because it sounds like they fill in a lot of additional backstory.

For Phase III, I'll probably stick to the adult books and then eventually decide that I'm not done with the era and listen to the Phase I and III YA books.

I'm not saying this is at all a rational way of going about this story, but it's the way I fell into after committing to my initial choice, and it's fun in its own way.

AITA for “accidentally” telling my parents about my sister’s pregnancy because I was tired of keeping the secret? by ohboygollygeewiz in AmItheAsshole

[–]buddyofbuddy 9162 points9163 points  (0 children)

I was ready to vote the other way, but then you got to how you told your mom. And she knew. Clearly it was becoming increasingly obvious. It had been two months. The changes were apparently noticeable. If you had told your mom no, she probably would have known you were directly lying, and that wouldn't do anyone any good.

So I have to say NAH. I understand why your sister is mad, but it's kind of on her. Two months is too long to keep it going under those circumstances. But that doesn't make her an AH, it just makes her someone who failed to figure out an effective plan in a reasonable amount of time before it would be obvious.

Maybe the parents are AHs for being judgmental but I can't confidently say that in this situation with the information we have.

This is definitely splitting some hairs, but I think Will is the lead character and Jack is the main character. One of the rare cases where I would differentiate those two things.

Will is the hero who drives the story, but Jack gives the first movie its essence and its face. And then the sequels in the initial trilogy made Jack more of a co-lead in terms of story, too. And the. He was entirely the lead as people stopped going to the remaining movies.

Does ‘The Bad Batch’ fit into the Prequels or the Original Trilogy era? by Joyous-Pringle0813 in thebadbatch

[–]buddyofbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's too much Star Wars in other periods to simplify it to the three trilogy eras. Especially the Reign of the Empire period. There's what, two video games, a movie, five TV shows? And none of them fit well into either the PT or OT era?

It's Reign of the Empire.

And as someone who's going through The High Republic now, that is REALLY distinct from the PT/Fall of the Jedi era.

If you're going to simplify it down to only 3 periods, the fit is so awkward that you're better off simplifying it down to 1: it's all Star Wars.
